The earliest known telescopes were in the early 1600's.  Mather lived in the late 1600's and beyond.  I don't see how he could see objects flying around the moon.

Birnes' assertion of a large, triangular neutral buoyancy a/c capable of traveling anywhere on Earth within 24 hours is questionable.  A blimp capable of flying over 12000 miles for 24 hrs without refueling at speeds in excess of 500 mph?  Such a craft would present design requirement contradictions that would be very difficult, if not impossible, to overcome. 

The retelling of the Gleason/Nixon story reminded me of an incident several years ago when Jim Mallard's show was being broadcast on KGRA.  I was on chat as some guest was telling the story of Nixon (without Secret Service protection) driving Gleason to the gate of Homestead and ordering the security policeman to allow them to pass.  When I mentioned this was unlikely, another chatter commented that was exactly how it happened.  When I asked how she knew that, she claimed she was there.  I contacted Jim and told him this gal would make an interesting guest, but I don't remember what came of him contacting her.
