I broadly agree with that. My issue with all religion is the way it's used to subjegate, oppress, ostracise and used as a weapon by it's 'leaders' on those it says it stands up for. Having said that; due to a recent family bereavement, I have had cause to be in close contact and advice from the local vicar. I'm not religious; but the funeral wasn't for my wishes. The vicar as a person is truly lovely. She had endless time for us when we simply wanted to say nothing of any consequence. I have no doubt she is naturally a kind and considerate woman- she admitted her parents are athiests!

I have no truck with the zealots and the scum bag evangelists who just rip off the vulnerable.

Sorry for your loss, Yorkie.  The vicar sounds like one of those Christians who gets the message and tries to live her life according to the basic tenets of having love and compassion for your neighbor.  That's what it should be all about no matter what else you may believe.  While I'm not a believer, I've known a lot of people like that and they are truly good souls by any measure.  It's a shame those people tend to be overshadowed by the vengeful and intolerant, and the scum bags who are in it only to get rich by exploiting the fearful and credulous.

try and convince those with religious conviction to change their mind.

Anyone who knows the religious mindset knows that "changing their minds" through reasoned argument isn't possible.  It's baked into the doctrine: if doubt creeps into your mind, it's satan trying to lure you into his clutches.  Or better still, that god is trying to entrap you.  Shun any doubt; avoid thinking that will undermine your faith.  FTF posted it right here in this thread (paraphrased): We can't know the mind of god.  To question anything that seems like a random series of events rather than part of god's wonderful plan is like questioning god.

That fuckin god, by the way, is a piece of work.  In addition to the douchebaggery of "testing" your faith, he's unbelievably petty, cruel, vindictive, hateful, duplicitous, and small minded.  God, in short, embodies all of mankind's worst traits without showing any admirable traits.  That's your god?  Really?  People admired and were utterly loyal to guys like Martin Luther Kind and Gandhi even though they weren't threatened with eternal agony in hell for behaving otherwise.  And god can't achieve that?

Religious nuts start from the position that god exists, therefore no factoid they can gin up to explain away the overwhelming forensic evidence and logical argument against, and utter lack of archaeological evidence for the existence of god is too preposterous.  It's highly insulting to me and other thinking humans to have these idiotic rationalizations shoved at us and then told we are evil people for not accepting them.  The cartoons A51 has been posting are no more insulting than the cartoon arguments of the religious nuts, and they have the virtue of being brief.

Which leads me to one final point.  You can always tell when you are dealing with a religious nut, covert or otherwise, because when you post long, detailed arguments you're characterized as "obsessed" or a "hater" or "beating a dead horse," but if you post pictures making an acute point succinctly, you're being "insulting" and "beating a dead horse."  Hey religious nuts, try being a little more creative: "You're spearing a dead Jesus."  Let's run with that.

Making broad generalizations isn't something you engage in when you're interested in deep thought and getting to the "truth".  You make broad generalizations when you want to dismiss something out of hand.

Funny, you have the answer in your hands, but your personal, narrow, and -- at times -- hypocritical view of the acceptable ways for people to express themselves in internet forums is preventing you from realizing it.

God.  No-god.  Atheist.  Agnostic.  All that aside.  Someone has done something really hurtful to a51d and that's why he's lashing out now.

I know a guy whose parents are staunch catholics.  Like, arch-conservative catholics.  They sent a complaint letter to Buca di Beppo's corporate office because their restaurants have something called a "pope room" with a bust of the (current) pope in the center of the table.  Upon growing up, my friend re-examined everything he had been taught by the church and found it wanting.  He became what is called a "lapsed catholic."  His parents are firmly convinced, and he can't talk them out of it, that he was molested by a priest when he was a boy.  Why?  They can't imagine any other reason he would abandon The Faith.  That seems the more reasonable conclusion to them.  But they're wrong.  Just FYI.

I hate anyone being preachy!  If I was interrupted by atheists spewing their beliefs to me at the grocery store, or on billboards or any other public place putting it in your face, it would piss me off just as much as when christians do it.  I do not consider what I posted as throwing my beliefs at anyone anymore than anyone else talking in this thread.  I'm all for Christmas trees, even a stupid manger with a baby jesus doesn't even really bother me, as long as there isn't some fucker handing out pamphlets and trying to get me to believe the story is real.   The christian faith is as real as Santa is, but hey, at least Santa gives out presents instead of taking them.

I hate having to read forums with things I find offensive.  It's just wrong.  I'd rather avoid those forums and only read stuff I agree with, but what can you do?  You HAVE to read stuff that offends you.  And tell everyone about it all the time.  It's god's will.

As for me, I'm going to open the Good Book and see if I can find humour in there rather than in these sinful and offensive cartoons.

In 1 Timothy 2:11-12, we read: "A wife should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a wife to teach or to assume authority over her husband; she must be quiet."

Ha ha ha!!  I can hear Sarah Palin laughing all the way over in Alaska.  And don't get me started on Leviticus! "Disobedient children should be stoned to death by the community."  HA HA HA HA HA!!! (Wipes tears from eyes) HOO HEE HA HA HA!!!!

Trailer Park Boys - Ricky, Ray, and Bubbles Talk About Santa
There is a comedian named Keith Wann who is a CODA (child of deaf adults).  I saw a show of his last year.  Very talented and funny guy.

Near the middle of his show, he did this bit where he talked about things his deaf mom had told him.  One story was her experience at a family Christmas gathering when she was four.  Ninety percent of deaf children are born to hearing parents and grow up in a hearing family.  Since the members of the family rarely learn sign language, and because the oral method is a failed mode of language acquisition, these children usually grow up in terrible, wrenching isolation, never being able to reach their families, to express how they feel, to touch their family's hearts, even though they are around that child every day.

Wann's mother would go to church, and learned to pray along with her family.  She prayed to be able to communicate and be part of the family.  But Jesus never answered her.  At the Christmas gathering that year, she was alone amongst a crowd of party-goers, as always.  No one would include her.  There was an image of Santa taped to the wall.  She didn't really understood where Santa fit in to the larger picture, as no one tried to explain it to her, but in her mind she imagined that Santa must be an even more powerful figure than Jesus.  He only came around once, seemed generous, and always looked cheerful.  Surely HE would answer her.  So she walked through the crowd over to the image, got on her knees, and she prayed to Santa to allow her to be able to communicate with her family.  My poor words don't do justice to how poignant this moment was in its portrayal; and coming in the middle of a comedy show, quite unexpected.  You could not help but laugh through your tears at the absurdity of praying to a mythological figure for an intervention of grace, even as it broke your heart.

Did you suck the dick first and then negotiate the terms?  I see you as a lemonaide-from-lemons kind of cocksucker.

When dicks need sucked just suck the dick and worry about the consequences and repercussions later.

This is obviously entirely metaphoric, aside from those times when it's literal.

Try it.  Next time you're in a situation involving, say, a shortfall in company profits, or a black guy pointing a gun at you... and it doesn't have to be a black guy, of course, that would be racist to suggest that any time someone points a gun at you he's black, I'm just saying that for argument's sake, and because it almost certainly would be a black guy, that we should assume it's a black guy who's pointing a gun at you in, let's say Detroit... let's say you're in Detroit, and a black guy is robbing you at gunpoint, or, as I previously mentioned, there's a shortfall in company profits... I don't know why there's a shortfall, let's say you were trying to sell Barry Manilow CDs in Detroit and they didn't like your middle of the road white boy shit, let's say that... try saying, "Is this something we can resolve by sucking dicks? Has anyone considered dick sucking as a means to resolve this particular situation?"

It might work, it might not work, but the point is.... the point is that it almost certainly would be a black dude robbing you at gunpoint in Detroit.

There was a thought-provoking comment that accompanied that Hitchens debate video.  The guy asked what sacrifice Jesus made, really.  Since he's all knowing, he knew that he was going to have some sense nailed into him, and die, and be resurrected three days later.  In the words of the commenter, he "took a three day nap" and then went to a far better place, so where is the sacrifice?

So the question becomes: what is the bigger sacrifice?  Being scourged and crucified, or sucking a dick?  (This question obviously does not apply to women or QuickKarl, because that would be unfair)

I don't disagree with yours or Area 51's sentiment. I was pointing out the futility of anyone trying to disavow anyone who was steeped in religious conviction of changing their mind. I've tried it in real life, and you usually get a kindly smile and a look of 'does not compute'. Questioning on any level is anathema. Sarcasm has even less response.

This might strike a note for some.

Sometimes in response, though, you get some rather entertaining tortured logic.

Wonderful quote:

Quote“I did CPR until the paramedics arrived. And I trust God. He has the ultimate plan,” she said as she talked to reporters...  She’s better off than we are … because of her faith in Christ I know she’s home.”

Why even bother with CPR?

Christians are win-win kind of people.

It gets back to the same topic about what Jesus actually sacrificed.  He knew he was going to be killed and go to paradise where he would rule alongside Daddy/himself.  So what was the big sacrifice, anyway?

The Internet is killing religion.

In his paper “Religious affiliation, education and Internet use,” which published in March on arXiv â€" an electronic collection of scientific papers â€" Downey analyzed data from GSS and discovered a correlation between increased Internet use and religious disaffiliation.

[...]

The Internet, he posited, opens up new ways of thinking to those living in homogeneous environments. It also allows those with doubts to find like-minded individuals around the world.

[...]

The Pew Research Center has offered its own theories.

One explanation Pew gives is that our nation is experiencing political backlash â€" "that young adults, in particular, have turned away from organized religion because they perceive it as deeply entangled with conservative politics and do not want to have any association with it."

I like the last one, because it just goes to show -- once again -- that the worst enemy for politico-religious conservatives is their own keyboard.  Post on!
