They interviewed a bourbon makers so certainly the US. They also mentioned a barrel shortage so this would probably effect every maker.

Oak tree issue maybe?  And if it's the "older" aged stuff... wasn't me.  Although Maker's Mark is some good shit.... Most of my heavy drinking I went Jim Beam, Ancient Age, or Old Crow.  Beam's 8-star is a fucking joke... friends did personal experiments a while back that led them to believe that 80 proof on the label is BS.

Personally, I think scotch has an off-putting taste.  Got a fifth of Johnny Walker Red Label once... it was a friend's birthday and neither of us had scotch before.  We didn't finish it... and me and him could put away a half gallon of other kinds if we put our minds to it....

I have nine bottles of this that I cherish along with my Oban distillers 97 edition supply. I am a Fine Scotch survivalist. If you know how to taste a Livet 21 properly? it finishes for about 40 minutes.

JW Red is good for mixed drinks and stripping paint.  But the JW Black on the rocks really grows on you.  Don't ask me about JW Blue, I've only ever had one thimble-full at a free tasting event.

Ahh. Johnny Walker is shit. The same way not all wine is the same, whisky is unique to it's origin. Talisker is distilled at the side of a sea loch on the Isle of Skye. It tastes and smells completely different to say Laphroaig, Jura, Glenfiddich or McCallan. There's a pub at Sligachon, on Skye that has two tiers of shelves around the huge bar (Quadrangle serving four rooms) that is full of different whisky. Quite a night!

I am sadly disturbed by this news...  IF true how is it the local liquor store was selling handles of Jim Beam for the price of a fifth?  Perhaps to speed the imminent price hike?

There's one thing to be said about whiskey, or oiske (some gaelic word...)  I always thought it was similar to the French eau de vie (or water of life)...

Anyhow, much like all congnacs are brandy, but not all brandies are congnac;  the same applies to whiskey!  All Single Malt Scotches are whiskeys but not all whiskeys are Single Malt Scotches...  Same for Bourbons, Canadian Whiskeys, Tennessee Whiskeys (ie Jack Daniels), Irish Whiskeys & whatever whiskey I've forgotten about...

I imagine Corn Whiskey/Corn Squeezin's/Moonshine should fall into the whiskey category...  Not to be a whiskey snob or anything...

I think I will drink about any of it if my preferred isn't available...

Conspiracy? I say "yes". I was talking to my local liquor store guy about how now "Old Granddad" is now 80proof. And also how Jack Daniels went down to 80 proof. I asked if the price would be cheaper now because less Federal excise tax on the alcohol. Nope. If you want JD, which I don't particularly like, may I suggest Evan Williams? Not only is it still higher proof but tastes the same as Jack and is substantially cheaper. And has a storied history also.

I think the whiskey shortage is only for "American" whiskey, not Scotch and it is something to do with the barrels and also all the new marketing and weird (well I say weird) flavored whiskeys they are selling now. JD is also pushing for a law in Tennessee that would help them retain large market-share and less competition.

Nice. Never hurts to hoard a bit, especially if you find a good deal on buying in bulk and if the stuff lasts a long time. Though I haven't fallen for, yet, all the darn commercials on C2C, GroundZero, Infowars, and general AM radio about "survival food-banks" and various hoarding food stuff.

Jack Black?  Gave up drinking that in the 80's.  Switched to gin.  Now it's usually just Scotch.

It was meant as a joke. But I guess times have changed. While I was in the army, I had a part time job at a liquor store in Colorado. Way back when in 73. We had several customers that had a tab.

Agreed. I never cared for the taste of jack daniels.  When I was young and stupid & offered JD at parties, I'd drink it, because it was the 'cool' wiskey. It didn't hurt that Anthony Michael from Van Halen had a bass guitar shaped like  a bottle of JD.

Goes to prove that taste and quality have little to do with brand recognition and success.
They could pour pure gasoline in a JD bottle and no one would notice.

Both Irish and Scotch are "UK Whiskeys" and much to my dismay both Bourbon and Canadienne are considered "American Whiskeys."

In order of preference (depending on mood and/or adult diaper wardrobe):

1. Scotch

2. Bourbon

3. Irish

4. Canadienne

All are drinkable in this shortage we are facing however...

ediot: the above listing assumes that the palate is first cleansed by shotgunning a twelve-ounce can of PBR and the Whiskey consumption glass is first rinsed with that medical grade rubbing alcohol known as "Tenessee Whiskey," one must have standards after all...

I keep a hefty library of fine single malts. Canadian taxes screw me on the price, big time. Example, a Glenlivet 21 is purchased at about $199. PLUS TAX!

Doesn't stop me though.
