This year my I've done away with the incubator and im letting 1 stubborn broady hen hatch about two dozen eggs, so I hopefully up my meat supply this fall. My hens are outputting about 15 eggs a day with the record day being 23 eggs in one day. For just 27 hens that's an impressive number

Wow. I only have 3 hens right now. I had 4, but one turned out to be a roo, so he's now pimping at a farm.  I'd love to have more, but I'm technically sneaking these into my neighborhood, so I don't want to push my luck, although I know several of my neighbors have some too.

My early crops I have going right now are radish, beets, carrots, yellow squash, spinach, kale, lettuce, tomatoes, peas, Japanese eggplant, burgundy beans, tomatillo, lemon cucumber, rhubarb, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, apples, and cherries.  My plum tree is going to give me bubkes this year. I think I pruned too late. Last year it was a gold mine and I might get one this year, if I'm lucky.

I'm thinking the hens will start laying within a month. Their combs are getting pretty red, so they should be ready soon.

Woke up this morning and all my tomatoes were gone! Darn. I'm guessing those damn squirrels. When the "grid" goes down I'm gonna eat my fill on them. Damn rodents. Put up some fencing today and hope more come in but pissed me off. Interestingly they didn't touch my peppers....maybe they don't like the hot stuff? So I'll be eating a lot of jalapenos, serranos, and habeneros.

Nice garden! I had a fig tree I babied for 4 years. It grew to 6 feet, produced one fig and died. The fig was delicious, though

I keep a small kitchen garden: heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, kale ( which survived the winter), cherry tomatoes, swiss chard, bell peppers, tabasco peppers, jalapenos, radishes, potatoes,strawberries, rosemary, parsley, tarragon, basil, mint, thyme, cilantro, oregano, savory and chives. Just enough to keep it interesting.

Never have luck with zucchini although everyone else in the world does. I usually get two squashes and the plant dies off. Don't know why. If it's a cool summer, I'll put up jams, jellies and pie filling.

Get a husky. No one's allowed in the backyard when mine is on patrol. It's not just squirrels, it's raccoons, too, that get into the plants. To keep squirrels from digging up flower bulbs, I used to spread around blood meal. It seemed to work, although I don't know if it's because they don't like the smell or the smell masked the odor of the bulbs.

I can't grow zucchini either. Everyone here raves about how easy it is, but I can't get them to grow much past the flowering stage. If I do get them to develop, they get powder mildew that I can't get rid of. I decided to not even try this year.

Back in the old days the farmers used to plant Osage Orange Trees around their fence line. The trees not only produce a bug repellent fruit, but their thorns keep wild life out and livestock in. The cows stayed away from it too.

Signs of the times. It was almost unheard of for some one to have chickens in their yard over 15 years ago. Now it's starting to become a more common thing, and rightfully so.

I started out with 5 hens and 1 rooster. Over time I incubated them up well over 100 at one time, and now letting the mother hens hatch them for me, and I kill off the excess chickens when winter comes.

My veggie garden and herb garden get the bulk of it. Every year I move the chicken Pen and scoop it out. It doesn't even smell bad as most would think. My goat pen smells 20 times worse then my chickens to be honest. Their poop turns into a fine powder dirt form in a few weeks if you line their coop with straw and toss in some plants and other organic materials for them to munch on. Chickens will pretty much mix their poop into clean mulch automaticly.

Last year a few of the big pot growers came over and filled 3 buckets full. They "claimed" it was for their grandma's garden lol. I really don't care what they do with it, as long as they are busy doing something other than stealing from me, I'm ok with it.

The oldtimers with the pigeon coops do the same thing with the droppings. I've seen one old guy's tomatoes and they were spectacular, much nicer than tomatoes with commercial fertilizer, even the organic stuff.
