Expired Milk

How close do you flirt with danger? When do you call it a day on your carton of milk. Will you risk drinking it a day, 2 days, arrrgggghhhh 3 days after expiry? Or are you a pussy and won't even drink it on the use by date? I knew someone who wouldn't even drink it a day before "use by" just to be certain. Because once you taste expired milk you can not go back for a while. I once read an article about how food companies are very conservative when it comes to pronouncing "use by" dates but I'm not sure if this applies to milk as one whiff and you can usually tell very quickly.

When is milk done for you?

Kelt

If it's not sour it's drinkable.

I'm currently defrosting a pack of pork chops that are about 8 months past their Sell By date, and I'll be eating them tomorrow.

Expiration dates mean NOTHING to me.

If you have milk in your home, let alone your refrigerator, you are a pussy.

I forgot to mention that smelling sour milk puts me off milk and I needs my milk at breakfast time so I generally don't want to risk sniffing it. That is why I like to play it safe.

That's hardcore. You sir must have an "iron gut" as we say Down Under. Well played.

As long as it doesn't smell bad I would say milk is good for a week after. I don't drink milk straight but on cereal etc. So maybe it doesn't matter as much for me. I'm guessing the date is skewed for safety and sell more milk. I have a relative who is a surgeon and he swears that expiry dates on medicine is a scam. Says they still work and "worst case it won't just work" but won't hurt you to take old medicine. Not sure if I trust that advice though.

If I had to eat cereal (and I'm not saying I do), it would definitely be with beer.

And for the record. I drink cottage cheese.

I put milk in the coldest part of the fridge, which helps.  Usually go a week past exp. date.

Some products are marked "sell by" others "use by".  Usually the date for sell by gives the consumer a bit of a window to decide to use fresh or freeze, if applicable.

Certain goods don't even have a Best Before, such as certain kinds of canned spam.

Being the Survivalist whack-job that I am, I have a few cans of Spam in my Emergency Box, which includes powdered milk.  No expiration date on my powdered milk, I don't think.  Even if there is, I don't care, given that expiration dates mean NOTHING to me.

Does Noory have an expiration date?

That makes it even more confusing. I want a hard and fast date.

He was sold at one of those stores that sell close to or just expired goods. Not only that but we were sold a defective product as well.

*sigh* yeah... it was an attempt at humor.

Do you guys take milk from the back of the fridge at the supermarket? I don't fall for their putting the closer to expiry milk at the front jedi mind trick. I once got yelled at by a small corner store clerk for taking the milk from the back. She tried to sell me the milk at the front that was 2 days from expiry rather than the milk that expired in 10 days. Needless to say I left empty handed and never went back. I had my cereal with orange juice that day.

Spam, powdered milk. Nice. Though may I humbly suggest sardines as a survival food? Last long on the shelf, are tasty, and a great source of protein and Omega-3! And cheap. (Though the best ones are a bit more expensive but I trust them more post-Fukishima.)

The key with milk is keeping it cold. Allowing it to warm--at all--dramatically drops its longevity. The "Use By" date is calculated via statistical averaging. If Leslie the Lorry Guy happened to leave the case that your jug of milk happened to be in, an extra ten minutes on the loading dock while he was putting a shrimp on the barbie, or whatever, your milk is going to go bad early, even if properly refrigerated from that point forward. That's just science.

Watched WWE's 50 Greatest McMahon-isms.  Surprised "I've got balls the size of grapefruits" didn't make the list.

Just mix sour milk with equal parts Quik and tooomeric.

These aren't 'use by' dates, they are 'sell by' dates.  The products are supposed to be usable for a period of time after the sell by date.

They are not that meaningful.  Certain fresh products like milk, meat, eggs cannot be stored indefinitely, but they will let you know when it is wise to throw them out - smell, discoloration, etc.

Other products are required to have a sell by date, but they are applied arbitrarily - some have a shelf life years longer then the sell by dates

None of this is ever a problem around here though, everything is eaten shortly after being brought home except for maybe the last of certain condiments...

As far as buying milk from the back - screw them, if it's in the display case it's for sale

I do coconut milk. Shit doesn't seem to spoil. Moo juice is gross

Jackstar

Almond milk with Grape-Nuts is delicious! But I don't think almonds are legal to grow in Australia, and I think Grape-Nuts means something else there.

You've probably been "milking" the wrong appendage.

Birdie

I'll use milk till is smells bad and starts to get chunky. I pull it out of the back of the fridge at the store, too. I think just about everyone does.

I've eaten yogurt that was 5 months past the date and it was fine. All of our yogurt expires before we get around to eating it. I used to scrape mold off of tomato paste and use the good part (until I discovered they sell it in a tube- no mold). A smell check or a tiny sip/nibble of the dubious substance is a good enough test for me, I don't pay attention to the dates once an item is in my house. The only thing I am picky about is meat. If I don't use it by the date, I toss it in the freezer until I can use it.

I used to manage an upscale gourmet food shop and we even had vinegar and water with exp. dates printed on them. It's mostly BS to force stores to order more frequently. I have taken cold meds and prescriptions years past the exp. date and they worked fine, too. Some meds supposedly become less effective as they age, but I have never noticed a difference.

I've been seeing this yogurt at the market called Noosa. It's labelled "Australian style" yogurt. As I understand it that means they also milk the steers, yes?
