Ok guys and Gals what type of pets do youo all own?
The reason I ask is that we just got a German Shepard Puppy the other day.
Little female and named her Anna.

We also have 2 cats, Bob and Tory who we rescued from a shelter about 6 years ago.

I've always favored schnauzers; Carson gets his 'schnauzer' do at groomers ... but rescue and vet believe he is schnauzer/poodle mix ... and its amazing to think that folks pay mega-$$$ for Schnoodle hybrid designer dogs ... especially when so many woofs at shelters/rescues need a good home.

I feed 3 feral cats and now there are also 3 kittens.

I also get nightly visits from opossums and raccoons, and a couple of skunks and grey fox stop by every so often.  I try not to feed these but they mange to snag a few bits of kibble and a sip of water now and then.  It's weird to see them out there together every once in awhile, they don't seem to bother each other while lounging on the patio.

Here are my babies:


All of them were strays I fed and then took in, except for Wheezie, the tortoiseshell. I got her from the pound when she was little. Bob, the black and white cat in the top row, passed away unexpectedly two weeks ago. I miss her terribly. She was my little stalker and followed me all over the house to supervise whatever I was doing.

We are currently caring for and training 3 dogs, a mama and two of her almost adult pups. It is nice to have dogs in the house again, but hard to keep from becoming emotionally attached. At least the pups are a little more than a year old. If they were little, baby puppies, we'd be done for. We've discussed keeping one of them, but I just don't know. I am not ready yet. When our dogs died within two years of each another, I was absolutely devastated. I am sure we will have dogs of our own again some day, but not yet. We have no human kids (by choice), so our pets are our children.

This thread was a great idea, Grov!  Hope it starts a trend, because few things brighten an otherwise dreary day than pictures of cute critters, especially the ones that were rescued and given a second chance!

Here's our foster dogs. Mama Ava is the dark one on the top left, the other two are her demon spawn, Merle the Squirrel and Diesel. We've left the boot-camp stage of training and are starting leash training/heeling next week. They had some horrible, obnoxious habits and very little house training when we got them. No couch cushions have been chewed for 2 weeks now. Yay! (and I probably just jinxed it, dammit)

One of the little squirrels didn't make it. They both fell out of their nest onto my car, and she might have had internal injuries. The other was given over to a wildlife rehabilator recommended by the vet and then released. Couldn't keep him at home because of the dog, who would have probably hurt him. What I found amazing is that the vet recommended the same milk substitute as you'd give pups. But they liked it, and the one remaining baby thrived on it.

I would have loved to tame the little guy and keep him, but Muffin has sharp huskie hunting instincts. She's gotten a baby possum and a bird, so it wouldn't have turned out well. Curiously enough, she left the gerbils alone. It was a sad day bringing him to the rehabilitator. I've been on the Monterey-Carmel drive in California. There's a spot there where there are dozens of squirrels that are very tame, like my buddy below who's high fiving me.

What was the milk substitute?

Sorry, I don't remember the name of it anymore, but it was powdered milk substitute you would give to motherless pups or pups whose mother couldn't nurse them. I got it at a large pet shop in the area, plus the tiny bottles. The vet recommended it when I called asking for help.

In December I had to put my dog Bonzo to sleep. She had cancer, and there was really nothing that could be done about it.  She was a yellow lab and I swear I've never seen a better behaved dog with more human-like qualities behind her personality. I would sometimes forget she was a dog. She and I went through a lot together over the years, and regardless of how alone I was our how bad things got, she was with me. For 13 years.

I have to admit, though... by the time Bonzo died, my enthusiasm for owning a dog had eroded, for the most part. I got her when I was 21, and my life was very different at that time. Now I'm 34, I have a small child, and I just didn't have the proper amount of time to dedicate to my dog. People don't think about it when they get a dog, but you might as well get a child because they have to be taken out every few hours, and you can never just leave them alone while you go on vacation or even stay the night somewhere. "What will we do with the dog?" That's a frequently asked question, and BOY can it be a pain to figure out sometimes. Also, now having a small child, I was a little worried about her safety around this 90 pound dog with her creaking joints and her obvious discomfort. When dogs get old and have sore joints, children can hurt them unintentionally just by falling onto them or bumping them. Even if the dog has never bitten a single person, you still have to be concerned because a dog's natural reaction might be to snap if hurt by a child. So, yeah, no more dogs for me. Too much responsibility on top of everything else I now must take care of.

Beyond all of that.... I just don't want animals in my home anymore. My wife has two cats that I absolutely HATE living with. I think cats are disgusting animals that don't belong indoors. The hair is atrocious, the shit box is something nobody should have in their home, and I'll be glad when they're gone. They bring NOTHING to the table. They just exist. At least dogs have the capacity to appreciate you.

What was the milk substitute?

Just in case you are in the market for a kmr, do not buy Hartz kitten milk replacement! Or any Hartz products, for that matter. The kmr and flea treatments from Hartz have been associated with thousands of deaths. See hartzvictims.org and hartzkills.org. I do not understand why they are still in business.

I have been involved in dog and cat rescue for years and have not heard anything bad about the other kmr brands, just Hartz. Goat's milk formula is thought by many to be a healthier alternative.

Goat's milk is a good milk replacement for orphaned babies because it has less lactose than cow's milk and more nutrients. You can buy it at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. It is sometimes sold in a can, in evaporated form, next to the evaporated cow's milk (you just have to dilute it with water). After a few days of plain goats milk, you can beat in a raw, organic egg yolk to add a little extra protein and fat.
