We had a place like that here in Ohio a couple years ago.  Usually they just shut the whole town down and dissolve it.

Out of curiousity, is there a reason why everything you type ends in a 1?

That explains things.  Welcome aboard!

We are Art Bell fans.  We are legion.  Not as big of a legion as before, though if I had to guess.  Multiple quittings will do that to a fan base... We do not forgive.  Definitely got that part down.  We do not forget.  Well, sometimes.... Expect us.  That's why Art has a shotgun by the front door.  Lot of fucking crazies out there...

The folks in my town are furious at the police and fire forces, which take a huge chunk of the general fund tax dollar.  We have one firefighter who "earned" $270,000 last year.  He worked every day of the year (overtime) and averaged 14 hours a day.  He said, "Hey, I went out on a thousand calls!"  The thing is, that's less than three calls a day, many of which, I feel very certain involved him standing there watching EMT's do their thing or watching the younger guys putting out chimney fires and such.

At the police department (where I worked for over a decade as a civilian), the policy was that if you were scheduled for court on your day off, you could call from home to see if you were needed.  If not, good for you.  HOWEVER, if you made that call from the police department (in your civies), you could fill out a CHIT for 3 hours overtime.  Everyday there was a batch of cops showing up and doing this; I'd guess that more than half ended up just going home because the trial got pled out or was delayed.  Tax dollars down the drain.

I support our "thin blue line"... but excesses are excesses.

By the way, Zoo, you put up with a lot of rudeness here while always remaining civil.  I don't agree with everything (okay, much) that you say, but you're always very polite.  I don't know how you do it.

True. +1 for civility

Even though I don't agee with their methods all the time, what I've found is many people that put on the mask are tired of the fucked up bullshit that goes on in the world.  And they ain't afraid to go up against heavy hitters.

Foodlion

95% of those bad LEOs and departments sure give the 5% good ones a bad name.

If you're referring to cops, then, yes, I agree... we DO need a group of women and men who will try to ensure order.  Humans are an unruly, chaotic bunch.  We desire and need society, but we often do everything possible to look after our own Id's fervent demands -- the result is theft, rape, murder, and such.

Zoo

West of the Rockies and b_dubb thanks for the kind words.  I do by my best not to let small things get to me. Their is a lot bigger problems in the world then people hating on me in a post.

I really think we have lost control of are police force in general. When the war on drugs came about we turned a blind eye to what was being done. No all police are bad I know this. We are now seeing more and more cops doing horrible things because of phones and sites like you-tube. They are trampling on people rights as well as making threats to civilians. I know they have a pretty rough job but they choose to do the job nobody forced them to do it. I just wonder how many people have been screwed over by crooked police before cell phones. Did you know that if you want to file a complaint against an officer  their is a form you can request. But if they do not give you the form what are you supposed to do!!1

bigchucka

I would imagine that they wouldn't have a problem giving you the form.  It doesn't mean a damn thing will be done about what happened, though.  Unless the story is one that the media might decide to cover.

Zoo

Well in the video they refused to give them the form and arrest some too!!1

I saw that. Thanks for the video. I think more news agencies should do those types of stories.
It leaves me to ask the question of why didn't these officers get thrown in jail for their actions? I'm tired of the fines, and firings they do on bad cops. Jail time should be served, and I don't really hear of that happening.

Unfortunately when the police are caught for doing things that get people in jail, or even in prison, like DUI, domestic assault, simple assault, shooting people etc. Worst case they get fired or demoted. (And then often hired in a new place.) If anything police should face HARSHER sanction than normal people for crimes they commit because they are trained, they are paid by tax-payers, and they have authority. If they abuse it they should pay a higher price. In most places these "law and order" types have a stronger union and legal protection and don't face any real external powers (civilian review boards, etc.) And are not elected, except in Sheriff and in some cases.

I agree with this post. I think all officials should be held up to a high standard. Judges, Attorneys, Police, Mayors and etc.. I also agree with stronger sentences for those who break the law. I also think that their should be a citizen over watch committee that has the power to fire and demote crooked cops!!1

Did you know that police work is not the most dangerous job in America. In fact it is not even in the top 10. So the next time they tell you how dangerous their job is feel free to tell them that these jobs are more dangerous. This list is from TIME (http://newsfeed.time.com/2014/01/15/these-are-the-top-10-most-dangerous-jobs-in-the-u-s)!!1

I was looking for an article to post here about the death of a young man with Downs Syndrome at the hands of overzealous, off duty police moonlighting as security officers. This happened while we lived in Frederick, Md, a few years ago and the community was very disturbed, especially since the officers were not ever charged, despite the death being ruled a homicide. I found this opinion article that outlines the story of Mr. Saylor and includes the story of a WWII veteran who was tasered and bean bagged to death by the police.
This shit is ridiculous and out of control. I know not all police are bad, but it seems 'protect and serve' has been replaced with 'get them before they get you' and 'make as much money for the jurisdiction as possible.'
If I had children, I would certainly not teach them to trust police and go to them for help, like my parents taught me. I would teach my kids to keep their mouths shut and how to lawyer up, even if they have done nothing wrong. And to treat all police with the same caution and suspicion normally reserved for a strange, potentially rabid, dangerous dogs. Sad times.

Warren v. District of Columbia[1] (444 A.2d. 1, D.C. Ct. of Ap. 1981) is an oft-quoted[2] District of Columbia Court of Appeals case that held police do not have a duty to provide police services to individuals, even if a dispatcher promises help to be on the way, except when police develop a special duty to particular individuals.

The only thing they have to do is enforce laws plan and simple!!1

They should be called and act as "Peace Officers" not LEO's because they do have some discretion and should use it when enforcing the law doesn't make good justice or causes more problems.

I DO NOT suggest using it, even to a bad or corrupt cop, because of their trigger-happy nature and because I'm not sure with the conservative court and various differences in Federal Courts on things if these are still in good standing. But, in the past, various Courts have found that you have a legal right to resist an unlawful arrest (John Bad Elk v. U.S., 177 U.S. 529 etc.)

“An arrest made with a defective warrant, or one issued without affidavit, or one that fails to allege a crime is within jurisdiction, and one who is being arrested, may resist arrest and break away. lf the arresting officer is killed by one who is so resisting, the killing will be no more than an involuntary manslaughter.” [Housh v. People, 75 111. 491]

But, unless they are actually killing you or your family, just go peacefully and get arrested (even if they already beat you up, it was a bogus charge, or a bad warrant etc) and get a good lawyer. Cities settle all the time and you might make out some good $$$ even after the lawyer's take.

As for the 1% being bad I feel you are so miss informed, did you know that their is no Government accountable to police shootings of civilians. In the 3 separate court cases my husband or I have been involved in, 2 of the 3 arresting officers lied in court. All were simple possession cases and happened years ago, before we got clean. My husband and I are respectful and well mannered, and did not cause a scene or mouth off at any time during the whole process. These 3 cases were in two different states, 3 different counties. I guess lying in court is a common practice and not limited to a particular jurisdiction. And who's word is the judge going to believe?

I was also arrested for driving on an expired license. Yes, cuffed, taken to jail, and processed for driving with a license that had expired. It is a most heinous offense. My understanding is the usual procedure for driving on a suspended or expired license is a ticket, and you have someone come pick you up on the side of the road. Then you get your license reinstated before your court dated and the charges are dropped. I later found out the laws in that county had been altered to target immigrants driving without a license. Lovely. And I am not even brown. The officer never gave me a reason for pulling me over to begin with, which I did not realize until after the fact. I think I was in shock. Anyways, I was sitting in holding while the paperwork was completed and I was crying. Not loud sobbing or anything like that, just sitting quietly by myself with tears running down my face. I was very frustrated by the situation and with myself for not getting to the damn DMV. The lovely cop who arrested me decided to make fun of me for crying, and called his buddy over to join the fun. What professionals! They had a good old time making rude comments and laughing at me. Any respect I had left for law enforcement dried up that moment. And this was in a fourth county, different from the other counties where my husband and I had encountered bad officers.

And stories like the following have happened to probably everyone: two weeks ago, my husband was driving somewhere he had never been before. While stopped at a long stoplight, he looked at his maps app on the phone to check the directions. A cop was stopped in front of him at the light. My husband had the phone low, by the steering wheel so he could see it. The light changed, he put the phone away, and proceeded with his left turn. The cop stayed in front of him. The lane merged into an interstate on-ramp. The cop slammed on his brakes in the middle of the on-ramp, stopping completely. The car behind my husband screeched loudly to a stop, almost rear-ending him. The cop came to the driver window and started screaming, literally screaming, at my husband about using his cellphone while driving. My husband very calmly pointed out his Bluetooth earpiece and explained he was checking directions while stopped at the light, perfectly legal in our state. He even showed the cop his cellphone, which was still showing the maps app. I guess this pissed the cop off, so he continued to scream, called my husband a liar, and threatened to arrest him. Eventually, the cop calmed down and let my husband go. He probably realized he was making an ass of himself and he had nothing to charge my husband with. We have filed a complaint. Stopping abruptly in the middle of traffic like he did was extremely dangerous and his behavior was absolutely unacceptable. I imagine the complaint will get sent to the round file. My husband has very long hair, a beard and tattoos, so he gets more than his share of cops treating him like a piece of crap.

And I won't even get into my ex-boss, the misogynistic, card carrying Klan member who was a cop for 20 years. They just kept passing his disturbed ass around from precinct to precinct until his DT's were so bad each morning his hands shook violently. They finally asked him to leave, so he bought a bar where he could drink all day and make rude, inappropriate comments to women. I am so sure all his arrests were unbiased, lol.

Or the officers in Wilmington, Delaware, who shot my unarmed friend seven times while he was throwing up from being tasered 4 times in less that two minutes (Google ex-Marine Derek Hale). Or the huge number of cops who come into bars every night, get totally shitfaced, drive home, then go to work the next day and hand out DWI's. As a bartender, I have seen it hundreds of times and it is sickening. I also have a lot of lawyers as regulars and the stories of officer misconduct they have told me made my hair curl.

No, I do not like cops. I used to trust them, and think they were doing a noble, necessary job few people would want. Then I waited on a few and dealt with a few from the other end. I am sure there are good ones out there, but I don't seem to come across many. I have had a few traffic tickets from nice, professional officers. I have noticed they tend to be State troopers and not the city or county variety.

And this is just my experience. I am almost 40 and that is a lot of bad experiences with the police. I have more, these are just the ones off the top of my head. I am sure everyone has a story or two about an officer behaving like a total dick for no reason. Yes, police are only people and have bad days, just like everyone else. But because of the trust society is supposed to have in them because of the nature of their work, they need to be held to a higher standard. It seems many officers have lost any sense of respect for others and think the law does not apply to them.

law does not apply to them.

This is why you should join or start a Copblock ( www.copblock.org/ ) in you area. Most people do not understand they have rights. The police are legally aloud to lie to you/but you can not lie to them. They do not have to inform you of your rights until you are under arrest. Never talk to a cop. Never allow a cop to search your vehicle. Always video, record, and record off site your and others interaction. It is not against the law to record police period. Copblock has all the information on this. They always say if you are doing nothing wrong you have nothing to hide. I like to say that shit right back to them. Know what State you are in and the laws of that State!!1

Make sure you know your states laws some States have Stop and Identify!!1
