About six years ago I backed off dairy about 75% and lost about 15 useless pounds in six months. That was great because I'm a hobbyist bodybuilder of sorts. That being said I do drink a fair amount.. drinking less beer and more gin helps as well. I also don't watch TV (only movies) so I am sitting no longer than an average of 60 mins a day. < movies no more than twice a week. I rarely sit at the computer.. I'm standing now.

Another BIG thing is to reduce carbs as the day goes on and NO eating after 8pm or so. I have a classic six pack (without sit-ups ETC) by just doing these things and working out four or five times a week. Abs get worked through all the other activities.

The little choices make all the difference over even shorts periods of time.

Walmart's having a sale on Lego I just noticed in the adsense above. I miss lego :(

Alan: What the hell is this?

Charlie: Bourbon.

Alan: You drink Bourbon while you work out?

Charlie: Gin makes me sweat.

Under doctor's orders, I followed the food pyramid, eating lots of "healthy" whole grains, etc.  I got fatter and fatter.  Now the doctor has given me some new blood test that shows I have a genetic disposition towards not being able to handle carbs.  He now has me on something more resembling the Atkins diet.  It's all nuts.

Your post perfectly portrays the problem with the pyramid I pummeled with purple prose in the primary post.

As for myself, I am intrigued by the (fad) 5:2 diet.

For those who don't know: On two non-consecutive days in a week, you take in no more than 600 calories each day for men, 500 calories each of the two days for women.

The remaining five days you eat as you please (I am assuming you are not taking in excessive amounts that far far exceed general calorie requirements for your body specs.)

The documentary I watched was persuasive, but what really caught my attention was Jimmy Kimmel's transformation. One of his guests told him how great he looked and how much he must be working out and he replied that honestly, all he did was fast two days a week and eat as he wished the other five days.

I watch Kimmel somewhat regularly (forgive me, Father Eddie Coyle) and it has been a slow but steady and impressive change.

I am curious as to if the 5:2 really "resets" your metabolism to utilize stored fat more efficiently.

Conversely, the usual claim is that if you don't eat ENOUGH, your body stores fat all the more - the system reacting to what is registered as an approaching starvation scenario.

As Juan said, it's all nuts (not to be confused with The Squirrel Diet, and that not to be confused with The Squirrel Diet II, which Evil Twin of Zen covered elsewhere in the forum.)

600 calories on two days a week - while not a total "fast" - sounds difficult to me. But I am definitely considering it.

Diet is complicated. lots of opinions. Lots of information, not all of it really understood.

I have found walking 2 miles a day and eating within reason keeps a person pretty healthy. some people find themselves in difficult positions due to compromises secondary to chronic illness, medications, and obviously poor dietary choices.

A friend of mine is making his food choices based on his blood type. I read a bit of it and it seems to me it is basically a fish and vegetable diet... which by itself is an excellent diet.

The body seems to react well to periodic short-term fasting. I would think any diet that incorporates that concept into an eating regimen, would be beneficial.

Personally, I am a strong proponent of a 100 percent plant-based diet. That is the healthiest and  quickest path to great health.   If you get a chance or you're interested, you might want to Google, Dr Joel Fuhrman.

You just need the right kind of carbohydrates. The low-carb craze is pure insanity. Eat real food, e.g., vegetables, fruits, legumes. I would strongly recommend you read Eat to Live by Dr Joel Fuhrman.

Bart Ell

Has anyone heard of Dr Fuhrman? I don't remember that name being spammed mentioned here before.
Dr Fuhrman, NO NOT THAT FUHRMAN, JOEL!!!!

I'm enjoying reading these posts and suggestions.

I freaked out last month when I realized I weighed 137. I've always weighed 115 to 118, but for the past year I've just been lying around eating cupcakes and donuts and feeling down. My metabolism has always been insane so I never worried about food. Then I turned 40 and my I guess my metabolism really did tank around then.

I've stopped eating white bread (**sniff**), started eating fruit for snacks (wahhhhhhhhh) and I take Garcinia Cambogia extract supplements and Holy Basil supplements before meals. My friends are all losing an INSANE amount of weight on a liquid version of garcinia cambogia called Plexus Slim, but that stuff's $100 a month. I bought a bottle on Swanson's Vitamins for $15 and it seems to be working just as well. I'm down to 128 after doing this for a month. Hopefully one more month and I'll be able to fit back in my skinny jeans.

Seriously, the stuff works so well, I'm thinking of selling it. That Plexus Slim has an Avon-lady component to it . . . what's the business term for it? Network marketing? (Pyramid?) My friend is making a fortune AND losing a ton of weight. (http://www.plexusworldwide.com/products/slim.html)

Interesting BBC series about obesity and the food industry. Part one is about how the low fat food craze was used as a marketing technique & the subsequent increase in sugar additives.

Yeah fine.

But you're sitting right now aren't you, at the computer I bet. That's not helping your FAT ass at all now is it :) You can read until you're even fatter but it does appear that you must make some choices now right? Look at those HUGE buttocks impressions into your couch cushions. It's like I hardly even know you anymore ;D

My God Man! Save Yourself!

FallenSeraph

Oh yeah, to that point I guess I should add that I've started speed-walking the dog twice a day. That sausage-on-legs could stand to lose a few pounds too.

Give the Automat more credit. It is like starting a thread about premature ejaculation and then sitting back and laughing at all the sob stories from the 5 second wonders.

LOOK WHAT YOU'VE DONE TO US, ART BELL. You left us cold and alone and now we're talking about DIETS, for God's sake.

Last year, I gave up grains and most sugar. I lost all excess fat. I was also exercising quite bit, but it's the easiest way I've found to lose extra pounds. I've fallen off the wagon and can definitely feel and see the difference, so it's time to get serious again.

Oh, not just diets. The whole shebang is interesting and welcome here. Food, exercise, conspiracy & forum humor.  A broad spectrum approach.

A show covering the confusion, misinformation, science, and pseudoscience of nutrition and weight loss/gain would have been a great show for Dark Matter. Maybe three or four completely different views from a variety of guests (along with some conspiracy theories both true and those beyond belief relating to the food industry.)

But yeah. If this turns out to be merely about diets, the thread will gently implode into that dark matter night. We can pin that on Art Bell instead of me.

I'm confident there's more than enough brains and humor to keep it branching and interesting though, for at least a little while and hopefully much longer. And I will learn from it either way. Many of you have been around here for quite awhile and your opinions and experiences can possess just as much and often more weight (heh) for me than a talking head, advertisement, or varied "reports."

I'm often flippant, joking, oblique, obscure, irritating, whatever - but I'm taking this weight issue pretty damn seriously.

(Warning: cliché ahead)

By the same token, I want to have a good time while doing so, if at all possible.

MV has been working in the shadows (he's always doing that) and recommended a supplement I want to will try, given that I so often overlook the superior vegetables. It was his message that planted the seed to create the topic.

)  )  ) ) ) ))) ka-boom ((( ( ( (  (  (

My only rules of thumb are these: try to eat mostly 'clean' unprocessed food, avoid anything that is packaged in a crinkly package, drink wine, and for exercise, I park the car a couple blocks away and walk to work, plus yoga and light weights.

I'm going to take a guess and say Raw Meal?

As of today, down 14 pounds since topic creation.

Slow and steady wins the race, etc.

Seraphim27, I was not ignoring you. I never came back to check this thread, knowing that it had imploded.

I'm sure MV will tell you - though b_dubb is warm, or perhaps even as on fire as a span of seraphim.

Ba dump bump crash

I would add "Garden of Life" to your quest (assuming you have not already discovered that part of MV's secret codex.)

I used love grapenuts n add blue berries. Now I hear they are verboten. I still say sardines and pickled herring are good but the C2C esp with JBW means keeping a eye out for Atlanic sardines (more expensive)

I recently lost about 20 pounds. I just cut all sugar out of my diet and drink only water. I try to cut down on alcohol when I can, but I'd rather be drunk than thin.

Adam Savage recently lost 30 pounds and talks here about his diet and fitness. Kind of, sort of, remotely interesting maybe? Thought there was a few decent bits, that stuck with me, anyway. Starts at 7:49.
