Maybe I have low standards but I still enjoy Fade to black nearly every night. I guess a lot of DMRN content kinda fits my interests though (UFOs, conspiracy theories, ancient aliens/cultures).

RedMichael

Low standards. But if you enjoy it you enjoy it. Good enough.

laserjock

I'm not going to question your "standards", but I have to ask:

Think about the parents and spouses of those who died in CT.  Think about a radio host allowing a fruit loop to make a mockery of their suffering and claim it never happened and that radio host tacitly encouraging the guest to fill the world with doubts.  Imagine YOUR wife, YOUR baby having been ruthlessly murdered and someone making a profit off of claiming that not only did events not happen as they did happen, but that they never did happen.

I don't question standards, but I question compassion, and the ability to think with a rational brain.

While I wasn't there at the event, I've been personally affected through loved ones who knew these families, these children.  Somebody needs to speak for them.  Maybe you see it as entertainment, I see it as exploitation over human death.  Sick, very sick.

So, if you don't think you have standards, what does that say about your self opinion?  Maybe if this ever happens in your own life perhaps you will think differently, one should hope so.

This is a fair gripe - and I share your outrage lj.  In my years of listening to fringe radio, I've had such revulsion several times to certain guests & host's handling of them over the years.  However I still try to give them some latitude since otherwise they might over-censor the very edgy topics I'm interested in.

I guess it's a line we each must draw as far as what we'll tolerate but I think in this arena the hosts have to have a certain degree of unorthodox thinking or else they'd just shoot down everything that came through except maybe e.g. the truly legit scientists.

I've only listened to Jimmy's shows sporadically and have enjoyed them for the most part, although I do have annoyances as well.  I'm a little taken aback by the recent backlash.  I'll listen to some more current shows and see if I agree.

Btw, as far as williedee goes, he can damn well listen to whatever he wants to carte blanche given his epic status as founding member of the Ultimate Art Bell Collection.   :)

I love the content too, it's the delivery and presentation of that content that is just unbearable to me. I only try listening because of the content.

They sometimes say "don't shoot the messenger".  But then again, sometimes the messenger is a Benedict Arnold.  Noory and Church are doing a job, not always very well, but it's a job, and in spite of my outrage over two shows this last week, I respect that.  But I prefer a job well done, a job done well.  Overdoing it by avoiding ANY questioning or challenging for fear of "offending" or being "hard on a guest" is the other extreme of being a harsh interrogator.  It comes off as being a pushover, an opportunist without journalistic integrity.  I've come close a few times in my own life, but I've never been a true sell out.  Selling out to guests for the sake of making a radio show crown doesn't make a guy a real king of radio.  Art knows this, and there are plenty of times we've heard Art not let a guest spoon feed the audience or Art himself.  Art challenged guests strategically and with precision.  He gave guests a platform, but along with that platform he often forced them to justify statements that were extreme.  Art would ask questions that encouraged guests and callers to speak, but he didn't give them full tacet approval in the process, like most of us, he was just as much a skeptic as a believer.  The truth is out there...

I appreciate our fellow founding Art Bell collection leader too, that's why I tried to respond with calm words in spite of feeling strong outrage over this issue.  As I said in my own way, Church has the makings, but not the maturity and not the ethics yet.  He's just a touch too sold out to staking his claim instead of doing it responsibly.  We all experience such temptations, we have to force ourselves to dig deep and find our inner ethic.  Especially journalists.

This happens but also I think sometimes hosts let the wilder stuff go unchallenged so the suspension-of-disbelief in the audience won't come crashing down.

Certainly there are plentiful times I would agree with this.

I didn't say I loved every show.. :P

But yeah, Jimmy often suffers (like a lot of radio hosts) from "guest worship".. Its like he's so grateful that they're on his show that he gives them free reign and doesn't push them or disagree with them. I think some of that is due to the fact that he's relatively new to the game, but I also think he actually buys into a lot of these theories. Something that Art did on occasion (the Quickening is a great example) but not always.

Its unfortunate that he handled the Sandy Hook guest in that way, but I think it was still an interesting topic. From an objective point of view, I don't see it any different than the Aurora/9-11 false flag theories. This one just happened to hit home for a lot of people.

There again is the problem when comparing these shows to other forms of "journalism".. I have always classified shows like Fade to Black as entertainment (which it is) rather than a legitimate  news source.

laserjock

Yeah, but journalism != "news".  Journalism includes editorials and presentations.

You might be right that it is guest worship or gratitude, but whatever the reason, it involves lack of experience and ethic, in my every so humble opinion.  I told my sibling's husband about the show, he listens also, and he was furious, he had to contend with her tears over the incident.

I hope that our shared viewpoint here gets back to Church and he might learn and enrich his skills and values as a result.  Whether straw man, false flag, or what have you (I recently took a college course that discusses this stuff, a journalism type class), if you are lucky enough to be sitting at the bully pulpit, you owe society to attempt to better it, after all, what is the meaning of life if you don't, just to consume?

Claiming that children did not suffer and die is a bit more sinister than, say, bombs were put in the WTC on 9 11.  Falsehoods and grandstanding and profiteering over misfortunes is bad, but making a mockery of dying children is especially heinous.  Frankly, I could see someone doing that getting sued.  Jimmy is treading on thin ice, there's a way to do things and it isn't the way he is doing it, he keeps saying fuck you to many of his listeners.

I personally don't buy the idea of a facade that something is "entertainment".  Using such a term so loosely you'd need to include prostitution as "entertainment".  It isn't mere entertainment, it's a power voicebox.  Mind you, I don't consider a Broadway play "entertainment" either, I view it as art and perhaps education or a number of other things.  Using the term "entertainment" loosely is a bit subversive and gives too much license to exhibit bad behavior.

laserjock

Anyways...  Enough said, I shouldn't belabor the issues here, he just needs to mature and improve and learn a better ethic.

So Jimmy Church, on his show last night, talked about how he thinks all his shows have been great and that he's glad he's done them.  He must be reading our posts here and wants to say another FU to us.  He kept patting himself on the back.  Maybe I'm wrong about this guy and he really is a total douche.

zeebo

I don't know about Jimmy since I haven't listened alot,  but he did lose some street cred with me on c2c w/ Noory the other night.  It's one thing to be courteous to your host (even if it's Noory) vs. flattering him like you're some groupie.  Jimmy was a bit too much the latter on that appearance for my taste.

He is insecure. Listen to the man talk.

As far as saying his shows are great...he is almost ready to take it to the next level and proclaim the show is going to be a "clashik" at the beginning of the show like Snoory.

"Tonight we awr havin another clashik show. What do yewww do when angels appear through portals? Our next guesht says energy cryshtals are the key!"

laserjock

Which show was Churchy on with the Snooron, I'd like to listen to that segment.  Last night Jimmy revised and said he didn't think that what happened in Sandy Hook was fake, but it's a bit late coming and why didn't he have the balls and intelligence to handle the guest that made this claim properly to begin with, and then, the following Monday he bragged that all his shows so far have been awsome.  He lacks any humility, or it's insecurity.  The problem isn't he saying one thing or another, the problem is how he handles guests.  Ah well, at least he revised and made it clear now that he doesn't agree with that guest's assertions.  Obviously, he must have gotten a bit of flack on the subject.  All I know is Art handles these things differently, he doesn't give tacet approval, he will carefully, gently challenge guests all while encouraging them to speak about their issues.  Bell knew how to tweak out the most interesting stuff from guests all while distancing himself and his audience at the same time.

He is still coming off as being full of himself.  Nothing wrong with loving oneself, so long as you don't harm others I suppose, but it comes off being pretty dumb.

Ah but the nothing cover story must be some kind of disinformation, so that just makes it a more mysterious something.  So now there's even more material for the next update.   ;)

laserjock

Aha!  So Jim is a man of mystery!

Zack

I wish Jimmy would stay away from these Sandy Hook conspiracies.  All those kids killed, pretty disrespectful.

Agreed, it is not even a good conspiracy. There are far better ones he could be doing shows on that have actual evidence.

It's shocking the number who don't believe anybody died there.

People suck.

I agree that with conspiracies, it's not slim pickings.

I'm not sure what he thinks he gains from taking the "disprove Sandy Hook" angle, either. It does not make him "edgy" or cool. Bad timing, bad approach, and just a bad idea.
