I think it's patently false to say George "destroyed" Dark Matter. Art destroyed Dark Matter by making bad business decisions. And we, as a society, quit believing in magic sometime in the early 80s, so you're post is rather anachronistic, frankly.

George doesn't suck, either. He's simply different from Art. That's all. Have you ever had to work under someone's shadow? Its tough. I'm sure it grates on George, in a way, but you can tell he loves what he does and, more importantly, he loves his audience. He's no Art, but he doesn't need to be. I hope for 2014 we all learn to have the maturity to accept people for what they are, and not hold them to some pie in the sky standard that will never happen.

Art Bell is an interesting character.

I listened to every episode of Dark Matter. I have every episode. I even started corresponding with Art. He, to my shock, returned my emails. I have had several discussions on air about a few subjects I knew something about with C2C guests and their topics. On air the guests seemed very interested and asked me to contact them twice private contact info. When I did they never responded back.

I figured out most of these people are appearing on C2C to sell something. Not to find out more, or solve anything. To be honest, if you think about it, solving something will end interest in it. The Mystery continuing is the gold mine, the answer would tap out the mine. Let's take Big foot for example. There is no reality show called Finding Gorillas for a reason! They've been found. There is a woman whose been living with them forever, and she's the one attached to them. No Bobo, or Ranea or Cliff, or Matt Moneymaker are needed. Anytime they do something documentary TV or movie wise with Gorillas, they consult the lone expert. The respected authority. They don't interview a hundred characters, doing their Crocodile Dundee impersonation, they interview her.

Investigating Paranormal, conspiracies is big business. There's a lot of money in this! Look at vast array of websites. Many of them into their tenth book and beyond.

A hot topic right now is Psychopaths. The only problem is, there's already a ton of research into them. Most of these people appearing as guests are simply taking the work of actual researchers and putting a spin on it for their own profit. They aren't interested in actually researching anything but their next book. Which they'll compile by simply reading everything they can issued by real researchers. Picking favorite items, and embellishing them. None of them are going to care to investigate your cousin Ned, no matter how much proof you provide he's killed hundreds. They'll let an actual PHD find you, investigate and then write a book about that persons research, Coast won't be interviewing you, they'll be interviewing the guy YOU tried to contact. He'll most likely act like he tried, but could never get a hold of you. This has happened a ton of times on a myriad of subjects, where a key person actually called Coast having never met the author who wrote about THEIR story.

Without Art Bell starting things off, there's a good chance all these TV shows wouldn't be on the air. But unlike Noory, he presents a problem. He wants facts. He wants proof. He's skeptical. He wants discussion and answers. Noory will have a guest on about how humans poop is actually the body expelling aliens, and Noory will act like he agrees with the person for 2.25 hours, the other 1.75 hours devoted to selling Carnivora.

Bell's Dark Matter was different. He had Richard C Hoagland on and laughed at a bunch of his pictures and said they showed nothing. He only accepted one as interesting. Noory would SAY he thought every picture was profound, and interesting.

A striking contrast was during near the end of Dark matter where Bell actually kicked a guest off early, because he wasn't giving any information other than "it's in my book", at the same time Coast had a guest on who did nothing but say "You'll have to buy my book" and the guest was on all night.

Dark Matter went off the air for several reasons.

Technical problems : 90 minute time outs. Problems getting the show. People calling in on cell phones. The cell phone problem wasn't going to go away, as few people keep a land line anymore
.
Concern: Bell didn't like the idea in the last few weeks most of his listeners were listening and calling in while driving. His last few shows he'd ask what they were doing, and the most common answer was driving truck over the road.

Pressure from Coast on appearances: The Ghost Buster Gals actually admitted they were told us or them, not both. Other guests told of this, too.

Bells obsession with sound quality: Constant

Bell signing another non compete: He actually did, and now has found Sirius considers internet streaming competing with them, since they half ass offer the same.

IMO Bell is the far better interviewer. The best product doesn't always win. Bets vrs VHS, Harley vrs Excellsior. In America the cheaper, more profitable version often wins out.

The reason Betamax didn't win over VHS was because Sony scored an own goal. Sony absolutely refused to let any other manufacturer make Betamax players under license.
