Would you eat it?

When you think about it, on what moral basis do we not eat dogs and look down upon those who do?

A pig is as smart as a dog. And we eat pigs. They, too, can be wonderful pets. George Clooney had a pot-bellied pig for a pet. He named it "Brando".

So what is the theological justification for not eating a dog?

Indians don't eat cows. Jews and Muslims don't eat pigs. Convention. I don't eat snake, partially formed chicks out of their shells, or roasted sparrows, or insects, or monkey's brains...or dogs.

I've been to many countries where they are eaten.  If any animal has been completely and utterly genetically modified more than a dog, show me proof!! - the dogs have been bred and inbred with so many traits to please their owners that...i suppose if you wish to take the risk in eating em, go for it...I wouldn't.  Not saying cattle are any better, but I just like their meat better, and didn't find dog or cat for that matter to appealing after the first bite.

An EXCELLENT point! It also happens to be a point I frequently make with all my meat-eating friends and family.

If it's good enough for Barrack, it's good enough for me

Would you wear them as gloves? In the last years of the Ottoman empire, a French firm offered half a million francs to turn 150,000 street dogs in Istanbul into gloves.
In 1918, the dogs were rounded up and sent to a waterless island off the Mamara coast.

I suppose it depends on if it's any good. Predators usually aren't very tasty. Really poor cultures tend to eat whatever they can get. That doesn't mean it's the height of culinary fineness. It just means they're eating it because they have to. Dogs (and cats) will breed like hell and tend to hang around people making them easy pickings. But when they gain affluence, people tend to stop eating them if they don't have to. Perhaps that's western bias spreading, but it could equally just be that dog meat sucks compared to a decent rib eye.

But, then again, people do seem to go out of their way to eat shitty meat in the US. Deer. Yes, yes, I understand that if people didn't hunt then the deer would overpopulate, and I'm all for hunting and guns and I'm fine with other people eating deer. But there is just nothing you can do to deer meat to make it anything close to good other than to toss it in with 3 parts beef and make sausage. Deer meat seriously sucks, it's 95% identical to horse (I know from experience) and I think the majority of people that eat it convince themselves that it's delicious so they can keep going out and shooting at them.

while beef is delicious, venison is better. venison is usually very lean, whereas beef tends to be fatty (this is what makes the ribeye a ribeye). deer tend to not be gm(copyright monsanto) and typically eat as they were intended. cattle on the other hand are often fed a diet which mostly contains: corn, grains and dead animals (usually other cattle); as opposed to what they should eat (grasses). this can lead to various diseases such as mad cow. cattle (along with hogs and chickens) tend to be factory farmed these days , packed into an area far to small for 1 animal, let alone 2 or more. this leads to disease also requiring heft shots of antibiotics and other things  to keep them healthy enough to live to maturity so they can be slaughtered for that nice ribeye you crave. if possible try a steak from a farmers grass fed pastured cow/bull (not ol betsy the 10 yr old milk cow either, older animals tend to have tougher meat). you will find it has a distinctly different but still pleasing flavor.

[sarcasm]
maybe  after that we should stick to the pizza rolls, hot pockets and the like

I already do, I live rurally and I buy sections of Missouri Angus and deep freeze it. Same with half pigs. I know where my meat comes from start to finish and often see them while still alive.

But I think that because deer is lean is one of the reason it sucks. The Japanese go to great lengths for perfectly marbled Kobe and it's so that the fat infuses into the meat as it cooks. Fatty meats tend to be tender and flavorful for the same reason behind why bacon is so good. Filet mignon is wrapped in bacon so the fat will infuse, and so on. So while deer may be healthier, it doesn't erase the general consensus that health foods suck in comparison to their unhealthy counterparts. And look at what people do with deer: save the backstrap and a few other bits and pieces and send the rest to be made into sausage with a shitload of beef added or ground into burger with beef, or used for chili meat if not.

I don't know that I'd want to say deer is healthier due to not being fed other deer. Actually, mad deer disease is just as much of a concern as mad cow. I don't know that anyone's figured out how that happened or how the prion is propagating, but in the US there are an alarming number of cases to the point that it's just as much of a concern as beef. Neither is very high, but it is happening.

Works the same with fish. I live in Missouri, and our fish bite to high heaven and I don't mean that in a good way. I mean they suck. I'm 100 yards from the banks of the Mississippi and they pull out walleye and catfish and the like and they all taste like mud. Yet people rave--but only if they're catching them (or shooting the deer). I hear all sorts of things like "well, you've got to cook it right!" and "Oh this is great!" as the catcher/eater winces. To me, it's sort of like those people that cut farts and think it's pleasant to everyone else just because they made it.

We do eat dog in a form, since many dead dogs are rendered for their fat.
The rendered fat is then turned into things like lard and other cooking oils we eat with.

...and glue.

The Japanese eat both horse and deer. Raw or with glazes like a plum sauce usually.
The big thing they eat that we do not is whale/dolphin. Its actually a staple food in some parts of Japan. In cans at the Japanese version of a dollar store and served at school lunches.

They'll eat almost anything. But they do know how to make really good quality beef.

Here's another "would you eat it?"

[attachimg=1]

I used to be a big fan of Indian food --- almost to the exclusion of everything else --- but I've since really got into Thai food. It is a lot less cream-based --- which is good on multiple accounts --- and the spices are far more interesting. Recently I found this delicious Pineapple-Chile sauce. It's like a party for the palate!

I would eat all of you, convert you into poo, and dispose of you. You can eat me, I will although hurt when you pee. You see? I am herpes simplex three.

hehe

I love fish but I have some problem with wanting to know the source. I love catfish but most of the store catfish comes from 'farms' around Indianola, Mississippi and when the local farms had started converting to fish farms the area had had a 'disaster ' involving surplus agent orange in the 1970's. The state ag had given it to local farmers as a cotton defoliant and made the area sterol to growing anything. Fish from the Gulf of Mexico or fish from the north Pacific I fear are polluted.
Deer tastes like 'cold cream' my mother used to take her makeup off with.
Elk and moose are superb and have no 'wild' taste.
Wild pig on Hawai'i taste like no other pork and are very lean. Very good flavor.
Buffalo (Bison) is my absolute favorite.

I've quit eating all fish since the Fukushima thing. Blame it on John B. Wells.

I used to do a little fishing when I lived in Wisconsin, though. It was extremly delcious. Bluegill is what it was, I think.

I've had octopus, too, which was pretty good. It was at a Chinese restaurant and it was deep fried with a tangy sauce. I also liked the lobster bites wrapped in bacon. Stinkin' nuclear power ruins everything.

I vaguely remember having a buffaloe burger when I was 8. I couldn't really tell the difference. I don't know, though, I always liked venison. Especially venison meat balls with a tangy raspberry-based sauce.

What about lamb though? That is probably the meat I like better than anything. Especially Greek gyros. They are awesome with some Tzaziki sauce and a nice, fluffy pita bread. Maybe a few tomatoes and unions thrown in for good measure.

Sea Change: The Pacific Ocean is Dying

Bluegills, sunfish, Brim, Crappies (Sounds like hell, think they were called that to put off the ignorant folks) All great sweet panfish- rolled in fine cornmeal and fried in peanut oil.
Octopus, squid fried crisp with rice flour , sesame oil..
I got some buffalo ,ground and a grass fed angus steak for the weekend.
Lamb is good
Deer with something like raspberry or mint or chutney or something would probably make a difference to my disfavor of deer flesh.
Cold crèam that is what I taste with deer, needs some enhanced , enlightened culinary addendum .
Had a lot of Indian food in the 70's when I was learning Yoga at an Ashram in Florida.

My only guideline for what I will eat is, how hungry I am. If I haven't eaten several in days... cooked dog may just be the thing.
