I spent 55-years in broadcasting in one form or another and content was king until the accountants took over.  Then it was all dollars and cents.  On the news side, reporters and photographers were suddenly considered expenses rather than assets.  Newspapers, and, to a lesser degree, TV had only local news to sell.  By firing local reporters, they cost themselves the only thing they had to sell.  And they wonder why circulation is so far down.

Corporate idiots pride themselves on their creativity, but their creativity amounts to simply copying (at a lower cost) what someone else is already doing.  Or buying something and dumbing it down.

I remember being younger in the early/mid eighties.  My parents would always listen to talk radio in the car, and I enjoyed it.  That was back when we had local hosts discussing local issues.  It was very relevant, and you really felt like the hosts and callers cared about the issues they were discussing and cared about the community.  Now, all over the country you get the same 5 or 6 dipshits all ranting about the evils of guvment, all the while lining their pockets while the country goes to hell due to unparalleled partisanship.

People were used to hearing Brendan and that older lady.  They had a certain chemistry.  I think if, given time, people would've warmed up to the Chumbawumba guy.

I don't think I would unless Chunga took a couple steps back and let Brendan get a word in edgewise.

I was totally disgusted with Bell's snotty arrogance at that poor guy Chunga.  If I told someone what to call me and they refused I'd ream them a new one!  I thought that show was great minus Bell and didn't miss the old bag who wasn't on.  There were some fucked up things said about that man here as well.  Whotf do u people think u are?

In this case, Art did the right thing.  It was not like Snoory where he is told that he was "Bill from Oklahoma" and then decides to call him "Billy."  In this case it would be like interviewing "Venus Flytrap" from WKRP and having him say "just call me Venus the love-God or Mr. Fly"  Chunga was a stage name given to him by a program director as a character for his morning show.  Art decided to use his real name rather than the name that the guy uses to promote himself.  Have him legally change his name and stop using the other one and I will reconsider.

If I demand that people now refer to me as "oh great, all knowing one" I expect a few people to stick with my real name (or at that point, perhaps use the term "jackass" as I do with a self involved, self promoting Chunga...)

Its the same thing with NPR. I remember as listening as a kid and you would here local town minutes meetings, committees to discuss important issues, and changes in local ordinances. Now its nonstop branded products Fresh Air, This American Life, Car Talk.  They tossed out all the local coverage to put on things that bring in donorship $$$$.

And interestingly, like the big media conglomerates, NPR has also opposed low power community radio.

I am a little surprised... and disappointed.  I will never hear any of the stations (I'm in Canada) but I like the idea behind them.  It seems a little sad the NPR would be opposed to them.

Chunga means several things. It is the name or nickname of several people, including:

Micaela Flores Amaya, a flamenco dancer known as "La Chunga."
Bernard Chunga, former Chief Justice of Kenya.
Moses "Bambo/Razor Man" Chunga, a player for the Dynamos Football Club of Zimbabwe and member of the Zimbabwe national football team.
Musonda Chunga a Zambian political candidate.
The character Nieves Cuesta on the Spanish television comedy Aquí no hay quien viva, whose nickname is "La Chunga."

It may also mean:

Chunga, the genus of the Black-legged Seriema and its prehistoric relatives.
The putative protagonist of the title song of the rock music album Chunga's Revenge by Frank Zappa.
Chunga (fanzine), a Hugo-award nominated science fiction fanzine edited by Andy Hooper, Randy Byers, and Carl Juarez.
Chunga Lagoon, a natural feature in Zambia's Lochinvar National Park.
La Chunga (horse), a thoroughbred filly who won the 2005 Albany Stakes (Great Britain) and the 2006 Summer Stakes.
Chunga Choepa, a Buddhist festival.
Chunga is a fragrance for women created by Weil (his last creation) in 1977, now discontinued. The composition consists of notes: aldehydes, bergamot, lemon, peach, clove, jasmine, lily of the valley, linden blossom, orris root, ylang-ylang, amber, honey, musk, Tonka, vanilla and vetiver.

Jimmy Chunga as in chimichanga/chunga.

He just wanted to be a popular Mexican food. Or featured in Noory's next snack book. Or both.

Many of these lp community stations also stream live on the Internet.

The problem with Canada is that there are relatively very few private broadcasters.

Content has always been a problem.  Despite your content laws, which curiously turned into a content crutch.

I always find it interesting when a non-Canadian knows more about our laws and our bureaucratic crap than most Canadians.  I am trying to recall... are you in broadcasting?

Content is a problem, ownership is a problem and you are completely correct about the content laws both with readio and television.  I think the CRTC is livid that they cannot control what I watch on the 'net and they probably feel like they are loosing their grip on the Canadian public (at least a little.)

I often tune in to CKUA (they have everything from classical to metal to bluegrass depending on what time / day you tune in) and have donated to the station when they do their drives (they are actually funded by donations rather than taxes or corporate ownership.)

Just for one of those fun trivia facts I recalled Rick Moranis talking about the "great white North" segment on SCTV and how it was created because the CBC wanted more Canadian content so they did something with no preparation and meant it to be a ridiculous parody that instead became popular.  He mentioned that him and Thomas were a little upset because they did far better material and their joke became the big hit...

You should try being an American - people from every corner of the world seem to know more about American laws than even our own American lawyers and judges!

The Party is over, the fat lady Miss Sirius has sung :'( Art is behaving because he has a wife and daughter to support and protect.
So unless someone on here wins the Mega Millions jackpot tonight and buys Art's contract out from SiriusXM it's going to be Silenceo from the high desert for the next year and 10 months. So get over it, get used to it and move on.! ;)

Ah, but Dan does seem to know more about our CRTC and broadcasting situation that most Canadians (many of whom are blind to the regulations surrounding what they are and are not allowed to watch.)  I doubt that most people under 25 in this country are even aware of "Canadian content" regulation.

That is why I think we've seen the last of Art.
He has virtually disappeared.  He isn't even responding to Facebook friends anymore.  Honoring the NC clause is one thing but he never mentioned banishment from humankind!

Art isn't gone. He's just reinforcing the radio bunker.  :D

Whatever, man.  Just wanted to hear Art do what Art does best.  And now I can't.  That's all I know.  I feel kinda like I've walked in 20 minutes late for dinner, just in time to see my 15 year old son snarf down the last ribeye on the platter, leaving nothing for me.  Oh wait...that was tonight....anyway, it feels kinda like that.

I guess this is news. He posted this today on facebook

That explains having to seek legal counsel on a forum for free.
