    I've had an idea for a podcast for a long time and would like to try it but don't know how. Do I simply record an MP3 of me yacking and look for someone to host and stream it? I'd appreciate any advice.

You can record an mp3 and then sign up to a service like Soundcloud and upload to there and then post a link to it here or on twitter or facebook or your own website and build an audience.

Oh and whatever you do don't ever sign a non-compete clause. It's a career killer.

There is an apple app for podcasts if you have a Macintosh computer.

Not sure about getting it published or promoted though.

I am guessing you are looking for some way to handle callers and record multiple people from multiple locations?

You might want to try Audacity.
And don't sign a noncompete.
