I'm listening to it now, after my mother just had a hysterical meltdown over the turkey. It's helping me get my blood pressure back down.

Thanksgiving is so friggin' stressful in our house. And with my dad not here, it's really sad and weird this year. I tried to talk my mom into going out to dinner or something, but she is insisting on still doing the whole shebang. And she's crying the whole time.

So mainly I'm holed up in my room watching "Cops" and popping in and out of this place.

Fun times!

But it actually did cross my mind when I was over there. I thought, "Damn, when did I get so cynical and jaded?"

I'll say this, though â€" I lurked around here for a while before I got up the nerve to post something. And I was afraid people were going to be like, "Outsider, go away. You're not one of us." But nobody threw a rock at me or anything. Even when I occasionally stick up for Noory, people are somewhat tolerant. I've noticed that we're all pretty supportive of each other, in our own, um, special way.

We may not be posting sparkly graphics with hearts and teddy bears and stuff, but we still take care of our own, despite some of our differences. Everybody's pretty much welcome, unless you show up and spew jackassedness all over the place â€" then we will eat you.

So Kumbaya and all that.

Thanksgiving has some roots in religion, but isn't necessarily a religious holiday. The modern thanksgiving has almost nothing to do with religion anymore. Apparently, it was started because the Puritans were sick of all those damned holidays (yeah, who needs a day off... or sex!? Go Puritanism!) and wanted to only celebrate days of fast or days of thanks due to special events-- like a victory, or a flood or drought or other natural disaster.

Anyhow, the one that we Americans celebrate goes back to what is essentially a harvest festival for a particularly good year, and ended up becoming an annual tradition.

There's nothing saying other countries can't adopt a Thanksgiving of their own (actually, apparently Nov. 5-- Guy Fawkes Day-- evolved from one of those thanksgiving festivals), and I think they should, since it would totally stimulate the economy with the steep rise in food demand is a wonderful opportunity to allow families to get together and eat food that they don't normally prepare.

Hanky Clause: Art Bell's Dark Matter was awesome, and I want it to be back on the air soonish. Or something.

As Krauthammer said in a chat with Tom Sullivan a few minutes ago, church leaders in England started it all by giving thanks to the Lord for the harvest and for all that they had. It was brought over here with them and George Washington talked about having this day be a day of prayer and thankfulness. Not shopping at Walmart at 6 am or watching football but being thankful to G*d for what he has given us.

I was kind of boggled when we went to Sun Valley Mall and I saw that the Firestone dealer there was going to be open today at 5 am. I guess there's this big contingent of people wanting bargains on new tires on turkey day.

Next year I want to buy an affordable PC laptop because its time to be able to do some things on that since so many things are done with Windows oriented software. I could put on parallels but I don't want to do with the virus issue though I have anti virus software on my Imac. Any recommendations on that would be appreciated. It would have to be a PC with a built in camera in it. I haven't touched a pc for 10 years except for gaming and dread the idea of having to learn yet another OS. I do know that Windows ME sucked and for once even more than Noory.

Yes, hard to find a good movie these days, E.T. was one of a kind.

I think its because many of the people at studios aren't like the people who ran Hollywood in its golden age. They totally disregard tradition, the mythos created for years with characters ( like calling the S on Superman's suit a symbol of hope ) and do so many things that are either revisionist or politically correct or both.

Patriotism, commitment, dedication, tradition.

All these things are ignored by todays filmmakers who also couldn't write an original story idea or create something without special effects if their life depended on it.

Without their cgi stuff, they're lost.

The writers, directors and producers of old didn't need special effects to tell a good story.

That's why some young people still love the old stuff and watch it over and over again.

And also why remakes and spin offs usually fail as they're derivative with little originality.

IMHO.

I wonder where the radio stations get their microphones like in this video and I wonder if the lady in the video keeps moving herslef in her chair in every video. Kind of gets me a bit dizzy if I look it at too long.

I tried looking up Australian Thanksgiving traditions on Wikipedia and I couldn't find any (?). I was curious because I know the flora and fauna of Australia is different, and such things as Turkeys or dressing-bushes and such probably don't exist in Australia. Yet, you must eat something special for Thanskgiving! I know I could make a joke about eating koala bears or kangaroos, but I'll refrain.

Let us know, though. I'm sure all of bellgab would be curious about finding out what Australians do for Thanksgiving day.

Yes more or less, studios have become more profit desperate and dont put money into anything they dont see as 100% safe profit, in the 70 and 80's there was a golden age of good scifi movies because film studios dared to try out new stuff:)
