Triggering the right chemicals in the brain could replace any "need" for it. As sad as that sounds.

Look at where we are now though: technology either allows us to augment the human experience or disconnect from it.

That is a scary scenario. I'm all for things that would enhance the human experience but I wouldn't want to disconnect from it too far. I'm ok doing whatever modifications to the body but I don't want anything to Permanently mess with my mind.

So what happens if/when the avatars become self-aware? I often wonder if death is simply "game over" and after each game you get another go. A virtual world could mean that advanced transhumanism already exists. Whether it's a Matrix-style existence or our conscious selves are all simply signals in a machine of sorts is another big fancy question.
