I know I'm opening up a can of worms here - being one of Ian's champions and all - but DAMN that man actually scared me this past weekend.

Now - I do know Ian said he was doing 4 shows in slightly over 24 hours: two c2cs - this one where he filled in for George on Friday - and his own on Saturday - his morning show, and a live (as in "visible") state fair show - lord knows that would make ME cranky. Then, a jerk caller called - but that's all he was, just a jerk caller.  He asked Ian if he (Ian) could feel the "collective wince" of his audience every time he used the phrase "where are you gonna take us?" during open lines.  Ian was obviously steamed, did explain his purpose in using that question, then very deftly ripped the guy a new one and went on to the next caller.

So far - no big deal, though I was a little startled by how angry he sounded.  (And no - not cuz he's a "church boy" and therefore not entitled to be angry - that's crap - I was startled cuz the caller seemed like a dim bulb and not worth the energy)

Then, it turned out when Ian came back to do his own show on Saturday, he was still steamed enough to make reference to that call and caller, and say he was still tying to shake it off.

Of course, you all know I NEVER loose it, not even when provoked and most especially not when feeling overwhelmed (she said, crossing her eyes to watch her nose grow) Ah well - maybe I'm just over identifying,   but, from where I sit - and given that this caller really didn't seem like the sharpest tool in the shed, I wanna say:

Ian!  DAMN!  Don't stoop to his level!

Besides - keep that up and you're gonna have a stroke.

Ha - easy to say when you're not the one being dissed - even if it is by someone who should be beneath your contempt.

I noticed the same thing when the odd caller would get through to let Ian know that he had not liked the Jesus impersonator. Ian really got his knickers in a twist and was uncharacteristically rude. If you are an on air host, I would think you could show a little decorum and professionalism and keep your cool on the air. Even if you have a meltdown off the air.

The only one of those I heard I thought the guy got exactly what he asked for, and that Ian had a point to make that wasn't just about being PO'ed - but you must have heard others.

The few callers that I heard get through to him were not being rude, or I would have sided with Ian. I am not some religious nut and cannot remember the last time I set foot in Church, but even I was offended. The point that one caller was trying to make was that Ian introduced some guy as Jesus Christ and never said it was an actor/radio host playing the role. Now, OBVIOUSLY, it was not the real Jesus on air, and the caller should have known that, but I still feel that Ian's introducing some guy as Jesus Christ and doing the entire show like he was really interviewing Jesus was sacrilegious. And that's coming from someone who's probably been burned at the stake in a past lifetime.

Interesting.  This kind of reminds me of the time a Jewish woman I worked with yelled at me for liking "Life of Brian" because it was "making fun of a beautiful story."

In her case, she was just showing a certain level of ignorance about the politics of the time, and the intent of the film.  In your case - you just have an opinion, you're entitled. (So was she, actually, she just annoyed me because she was talking to someone who was Christian, did like it, and didn't wanna hear me try and explain.)

I am religious- though, like someone else here we all know and love, my every-day speech and behavior hardly reeks of piety.  I do recall the last time I was in church, though it's been too long. And, while I'd never have the nads to do what this "Jesus Christ" guy does, especially not every week, i don't find it any more sacrilegious (though possibly a bit more arrogant since it's not scripted, and could go anywhere) than playing the lead in Jesus Christ Superstar or Godspell.

The caller you mentioned was the only one I heard complain.  And while I agree that Ian is smart enough to know he was going to ruffle some feathers with that show, that caller wasn't just expressing an opinion.  He was engaging in a process known as "rebuking" in some Christian circles. IOW, he was calling for Ian, as a fellow Christian, to recognize a, oh, sin, if you will - though he may not have been taking it quite that far. Ian tried to warn him off and the guy didn't take the hint.  I still think he got exactly what he asked for.

I also liked what Ian had to say because he took the opportunity to make fair comment about his own role as clergy, not so much about the guy. I did and do applaud the way he handled that. But that's me.

Having said all that, I realize that I feel the way i do abut this incident because I presume a certain level of insight - which may or may not be correct - into what was actually going on. So, perhaps there was something beyond weariness and overwhelm going on this past weekend that i don't have any insight into,  Who knows?

Probably? You think that the fact you smell like Joan of Arc is a coincidence?

(did I just hear you say "And as long as you're down there...."?)

We might have a little problem, because what I said was "As long as I'm down here ....!"

Oh, my! ;)

Actually, I think Cam may be a fellow perv, but is more discreet about it than us (winking at Camazotz).

(laughing) but only in the best way possible! Actually, we could both probably learn a thing or two from the forum Master (the way Art is the radio Master)!

I know it's only in the good way. And I'm sure Mr.Martini knows it too.

*About to go on my Guy N. Smith round-up!*
