The plane crash in San Fran.

Ok, I been watching foxnews and they are talking about the airplane that crash in san fran. The talking heads are not the brightest when it comes to aircrafts related items. I wish that they do some "homework" before asking the guests any questions. I can ask better questions in general. I also can asks better questions about aircraft related items because I am a pilot(G.A. pilot). I think that the foxnews talking heads went to the george noory school of interviewing.

I think a thread merge might be on the cards:

I agree though; the average news reporter has a narrow field of expertise in things technical and therefore doesn't even know the question let alone if they're getting the right answer. The problem at the other end is getting someone who is an authority on the subject making it understandable for the average slob dribbling at the images on his plasma screen. I've had a lifelong interest in flying things, but it's in recent years and being very lucky to get to know and chat with aerospace engineers and pilots I have a far better understanding of why and why not aircraft can and can't fly.

You may be right about the merge. I been flying as a pilot for 20 years. I mainly fly for fun. I also work in and around aircrafts went I was in the US Air Force. Its a little annoying that the Talking heads on the news networks(fox, cnn,nbc and msnbc for example) dont do a little bit more "homework" first.

Seems not enough airspeed caused the crash landing..SF has had the ILS shut down for maintenance, and so he would be landing VFR only. Which shouldn't be a stretch as a lot of airports don't have ILS. However...(and I find this difficult to fathom) the pilot hadn't landed a 777 before..which in itself isn't a big deal, but surely he had simulator training and flew in the right hand seat to get familiar with the cockpit and the aircraft characteristics? All very strange. :-\

Juan

The news here is that the pilot had not landed a 777 before at that airport. I don't know enough to know if that is significant or not.  It seems that every pilot would have a first time landing a type of plane at a particular airport.

The news is making a big deal out of landing at this airport for the first time. Yes some airports are "harder" to land then others but the weather for the airport was VFR. That makes it easier to do. Maybe the airline could have make the Pilot who was flying the plane(777) practice a few more times in the SIM. I hope that after the ntsb does their thing is to make sure that all airlines make sure that their pilots gets more time in the sims.

I am not sure want type of training the south korean airlines has but if more airlines like the military. For example in the military you always "train like you fight and fight like you train". If more airlines does that it will help to prevent want happen in san fran. The sims are getting better so a flight crew can train for different types of airports, emergencies, and other items that can happen.

"100% accurate" TV station gets scoop on pilots' names, but doesn't catch on something isn't quite right: http://www.mediabistro.com/tvspy/epic-ktvu-fail-anchor-reports-pilot-names-including-sum-ting-wong-and-wi-tu-lo_b97368
KTVU anchor reports names as:
"Sum Ting Wong";
"Wi Tu Lo";
"Ho Le Fuk"; and
"Bang Ding Ow".

Station management pretty much has to claim that they weren't being mean or irreverent, but that its entire news division is made up of people too stupid to get a job anywhere doing anything else.

Uh, oh.  Could "Nooryitis" be spreading?

If you haven't run the short vid accompanying the link, do so. It's hilarious listening the the female anchor read the names off with such seriousness and never get a clue.

I had Savage on in the background a couple of hours ago and he played the anchor reading off the names.  He was outraged by it but, as tragic as the accident was with deaths and injuries, I have to admit I chuckled at the idiocy of the anchor.  How could you read those names and not pick-up on it fairly quickly? Sum Ting Wong??? Talk about a Noory moment.  ::)   "Engage brain before mouth."

Now listen to Noory do the EXACT same thing tonight. ;)

Proof that the KTVU anchor simply doesn't think while she'd reading the teleprompter. There's a lot of that going around I understand.

Juan

It now seems that the TV station did check on the names and they were confirmed by an intern at the NTSB.

I got my first laugh of the day from that video.  love it when stupid news people reveal themselves to be ... stupid news people.  The utter noorescence is chilling

I just saw the news about this today.  I have to admit I laughed at the news people being this dense.

The San Francisco Bay Area has A LOT of Asians living here, from all over.  I can't believe a news organization around here would fall for this - none of these are even close to sounding anything like Korean names.  I'm surprised there wasn't a Korean-American or maybe a Chinese-American somewhere along the data chain to catch it even if these other idiots didn't.

Not sure they should sue for it, but lets face it, in the land of spontaneous litigation where a blame makes a claim, they'll likely get a result. However, I'd say the airlines reputation might be fucked by the actions of the pilots; not the idea of a joke by someone to give the fictitious names to an unsuspecting intern. People died and got injured here, so the joker may have laughed like a drain..who knows.

As I understood it the station claimed they called the National Transportation Safety Board which is in charge of investigating the crash and were told "by an intern" that those were the names. I'm unaware of whether such a call was actually made, or if anyone with NTSB was talked to, or if it really was an intern they talked to, or if the conversation was as reported, or where the names would have come from in the first place. If I had one guess I'd say the names were cooked up at the station as a Ron Burgundy joke by colleagues of an unrespected anchor, or as payback to a harpy by wounded underlings.

I worked with a guy who was married to a tv anchorwoman, and she told a wonderful story about how the station's number 1 anchor was a complete asshole to powerless interns and assistants. But it seems the assistant that he yelled at for a year made it through by pissing in the dickhead's coffee every.single.day. Revenge is a powerful motivator.
