We certainly ought to have seen some change in the statistics after pouring trillions in government programs and wealth transfers into this every year for years on end.  Yay, we can measure that some are better off after getting handouts.  So why are the poor poorer?  Why aren't things improving across the board?  Why is it the more we do the worse things get?

How much better off would those same people have been if they had opportunity rather than handouts - decent educations and good jobs? 


You've heard it before, but if Socialism worked we would be all for it. 

Since you don't like the examples of our cites over the past 50 years, another recent case study is Venezuela, once an up and coming resource rich country.  Look what Hugo Chavez and his friends did to that economy, to that society, to that political system.  In the name of compassion, of course.  I'm sure they could offer up similar statistics about how a certain tiny percentage of that country is statistically 'better off', meanwhile the country - for everyone - is in shambles.
