After about ten of these, this thread is almost fun again.

There is something about the concept of "complete tee-totaler" that you have failed to grasp.

I never drink alcohol unless I drink something that has alcohol

My original point becomes more poignant.

Let's just use occam's razor here. Is it more likely that he is an upset fan, or that severe sexual trauma in his life at some point has led him to attach some sort of father like feeling towards Art?

Keep in mind that there are many many upset fans that we actually know of, and not a single person who has this strange attachment towards Art that you claim he does.

Now, which seems more likely?

Using George Senda's Warped Logic,( Art's former fans who now see Art in a different light-as being a liar, should leave him alone and not bring up what happened 17 years ago- to substantiate his untruthfulness)- then former fans of Bill Cosby who have turned on Bill should leave what Bill did in the past (Rapes) alone because it brings pain to his family. :o

Not much knowledge of Senda/Falkie here, but I'll attest that there's plenty wrong with this warped logic. Comparing Art with Cosby over what should be dredged up is very apples and oranges.

Cosby has never faced criminal prosecution for whatever he did and has managed to settle any possible civil suits -- so he's never been formally judged by the justice system. Art, in contrast, was not the criminal but one of the "extended" victims and that case has been adjudicated thoroughly. Attempts to use worthless and scurrilous rumors and videos to reopen an old wound and provide evidence of lying have no legitimacy, even though they manage to avoid being legally quashed.

It's another case of free speech being abused by people who mockingly (and, with some people, innocently) wrap themselves in the First Amendment. One of these people now has an audience here, limited though it may be. If you don't want to attract vermin, it's sometimes necessary to call trash "trash," even if you never follow up by dumping it in a landfill.

As Georgie For President 2216 explained, that’s not actually true:  if you traveled close to the speed of light, you could arrive at your destination in an arbitrarily short time (dependent on how close to the speed of light you traveled) from your own point of view.  Theoretically, you could get to the nearest star (roughly 4 light-years away to keep it simple) in an hour, due to time dilation (if you found a way to counter the crushing acceleration forces involved).  If you came back to the Earth at the same average speed (very near the speed of light), two hours would’ve passed for you, and eight years plus two hours would have passed on Earth.

However, this doesn’t appear to be how ufos travel.  Instead, they appear to warp spacetime around their craft, so the craft is motionless within the field, and the field acts like a conveyer belt moving the craft around.  The nice thing about this propulsion concept (first theoretically described by a young Miguel Alcubierre back in 1994) is that there’s no time dilation for the travelers, no feeling of acceleration at all, and no known upper limit to how quickly you can arrive at your destination.  With this kind of polarized gravitational field propulsion, you could theoretically wink over to the Andromeda galaxy in an instant, come back in another instant, and you’d be back in two instants from everyone’s point of view.  The only limit is the extent to which you can warp the spacetime.  It appears that this requires energy levels very far beyond human capabilities, but for a civilization a million years ahead of us it may be child’s play.  NASA's testing an experimental device to detect a minute warp field right now at the Johnson Space Center, but their concept depends on a wildly speculative higher-dimensional theory of spacetime.
Nope.  The EM Drive is >99.9999999% more likely to be some kind of thermal effect rather than anything useful.  But even if it could violate the conservation of momentum, which it almost certainly doesn’t, it could never exceed the speed of light, because it’s an electromagnetic device.  And electromagnetic forces can never propel anything faster than the speed with which an electromagnetic field propagates, i.e., the speed of light.
An astronomical unit (AU) is actually the distance from the Earth to the Sun, roughly 8 light-minutes.

It’s a shame that Seth isn’t more imaginative.  He knows his textbook science, but seems to suffer from the same boring conceit that most scientists suffer from:  the silly idea that just because â€"we- can’t travel to distant stars yet, that â€"nobody else- can do it either.  Gimme a break.  There are planets in the habitable zones around their stars millions, even a billion or more years, ahead of us in terms of planetary age.  What do you think we humans will be capable of if we survive another 100 million years?  Applying our concepts of “physically impossible” to a race that far ahead of us is just absurd.  They're probably skipping around the Earth all the time, keeping a sensible distance from our observers because we're a stupid and violent race of savages, for the most part.

Oh come on - tell me that there isn't more going on here than a former fan of the show getting mad at Art Bell for going off the air.  It's clear as day that nobody gets this outraged, for this long, unless something much much deeper and super horrible is behind it.

I'm not claiming to be insightful, and I'm not saying that I know what the underlying cause is.  But anyone with a spark of brain activity could tell that 1 + 1 =/= 900 gazillion.

I just want to know what the fuck is really going on here.  If you can explain it, then please do.  But a guy with no horse in the race doesn't go this far unless there's a story to tell.  You have to know that.  I'm not even particularly intelligent and that's been obvious from the start.

Yep, pretty much just, that.

...But. It'll all make sense when I publish my autobiography- "Livid- the musings of an angry penguin'.

-I know, you're dying to learn what makes the penguin tick, but you'll have to wait for the book. However, you'll get a free copy and an invite to the Oprah Winfry book club which will certainly be making this book a top selection.

I'm being dead serious actually â€" if I were joking around I’d make it quite obvious.

When I came back to this thread, I admit it, all I could think about is how much I’ve detested seeing what you’ve done here.  Dredging up a very real and horrific personal tragedy to make an irrelevant point, hammering on it until a 70-year-old stranger couldn’t stand it anymore.  It’s been ugly and vile, and I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to think of you as fully human because you’ve gone so far overboard here that I can’t yet fathom a rationale for it.

But that statement above seems like a tacit admission that yes, you’re aware that the source of the hatred you’ve expressed in this thread lately, really doesn’t have anything to do with Art Bell.  There’s a story behind all this that goes way back.

Thank you for that.  Because it was really a drag to think that someone could dish out that much misplaced contempt as you have in the last week, against a guy you’ve never met, just because he stopped doing a radio show.

But it seems that there’s a deeper reason, and this was all just some kind of trigger, and that puts things in perspective. Perhaps human beings really are basically born good, but they can just get all twisted up inside when life is really really shitty to them.  If so, then there's still hope.  Maybe if we do a better job at making a safer and more humane society, we can avert this kind of psychological damage.  And the damage that's already been done - most of that can be repaired.  I have a friend who helps people with the most unimaginable kinds of trauma get through it and start to live much happier and healthier lives.  I'm sure she's even saved some lives along the way.  Something to consider.

Well, first - he said he hasn't been listening since the Sirius debacle.  So why would he be upset at all over a show host that he hasn't even been listening to for years?

And sure, a lot of fans have been unhappy, but only one has dredged up the unthinkable, and filled about 1/3 of the last 100 pages or so with statements not about the quitting, but about the core character of the guy, even accusing him of being a sociopath.

Surely you can see how disproportionate the reaction has been.  The recent events triggered something.  That only happens when someone's already boiling over with emotional outrage over something buried.  And triggers tend to be related to the source of that outrage, so it's reasonable to assume that the underlying issues have something to do with rage directed at an older male figure.

Not only does the source of the hatred not have to be Art Bell, it doesn't have to be this troll's personal past either. His view of the world and the people in it is perfectly attuned to trolldom. So are his actions on this site. Trolldom is an increasingly common Internet disease, which is highly communicable to people who are psychologically pre-disposed. You can blame and treat the person or you can blame and treat the disease. I would go with the latter. There are ways to do this.

You’re deflecting, but you know I’m right.  Only you know what happened to you, but obviously it was really really bad.  Maybe even worse than I thought.  You don’t have to admit it here, but at least admit it to yourself.  At least be honest with yourself.

You’re right, that was overly harsh.  I guess I didn’t really believe it, but I thought that if I gave you something worse to compare it with, then you might explain what the real problem is here.  Because whatever it is, the psychology at work here is pretty much the same.  There’s a really deep trauma within you, whatever it is you hate yourself for it, so you’re out to make everyone else hate you too.  And when they do, you can hold it against them because deep down you know it really isn’t your fault.

I want to understand it.  I was so confused by it at first that I thought you might be some kind of “hired gun” â€" that this was some kind of  “job” for you.  All the hours you’ve invested here, all the rancor and muck-raking.  It didn’t make sense that someone would react this way over a radio show host going off the air.

But now I realize that I underestimated the amount of damage that can happen to a human psyche.  You’re looking for something here; an escape or perhaps vengeance for something so personal that you can’t even face it.

You have to know that there’s something more here going on.  Nobody gets this outraged over some radio show.  Whatever it is, you’re intensely and relentlessly pissed off about it, and you seem to be too deeply frightened to even acknowledge it, let alone face it.

At least admit that there’s â€"something- more behind all of this; the weeks of character assassination, and dredging through old documents for crumbs of evidence, and picking fights with people here, and shaking your fist at the sky.  It’s obvious that nobody gets that mad about some minor celebrity quitting a radio show.

Can you do that much?  Can you just admit that the source of all this hate and fury existed within you long before Art Bell went off the air?

I think that would be really good for you, I really do.  They say the truth shall set you free.  At least admit the truth to yourself.  Then maybe a close friend, or a professional.

You don’t have to live like this.  You can have a happier life.  And all joking aside, there’s no shame in homosexuality â€" I’m not saying that’s the case for you personally, but it’s just a genetic disposition.  Nobody should hate themselves for it.

I think he's just someone who won't back down. He was challenged on the things he was saying and then went on and over the same things. I don't think that suggests someone who had a real axe to grind, but rather someone who didn't want to be on the losing end of an argument. I think sometimes you can get into a bit of a 'zone' when you are posting on forums, particularly if you are under attack, when you will say a lot more than you ordinarily would. It's a stretch to attribute any darker motives, I think

It took an amazingly long time, apparently, for some passengers on the Titanic to figure out that they were "on the Titanic," despite some major indications. Historical perspective on current events, if you will.
