These are just my raw thoughts. And for the record, I don't discriminate based on race, creed, color, level of education, where you were born, where you live now, how much money you’ve got, how little money you’ve got, your appearance, your hometown, your favorite sports team, your age, your sex, your sexual preference, your politics, your religion, or whether you agree with me or not. I don’t claim to be right or know all the answers, but I had this thought again tonight:

I don't know why we are returning here again... But is it alright for a gay person to use such a word, or must they also be conscious that they may offend somebody or "trigger a painful reaction?"  Provided that I may have to "pay" for being a fag, can I use the word, or is it still verboten?

I'm one myself--I don't use it. I don't need to use slurs that are intended to denigrate members of minority populations. My philosophy, I guess, is that I have no business telling others what shouldn't offend them. I can't impose my meanings (or intended meanings) of words onto others. When I upset people with slurs (and I have, and I learned), whether I think their anger is valid or "oversensitive" is irrelevant. The next time you call someone “fag” in an endearing or joking way, remember that it’s the last word that many LGBTQ victims all over the world heard moments before they were murdered. Then use it, or not. But just know that.

And you don't get extra credit or "get out of using hate speech free" cards for knowing one either.

that's kinda the point i was sarcastically attempting to make.  simply knowing someone who is gay does not inherently make one more qualified to decide what constitutes acceptable use of a particular word.  it's an irrelevant thing to mention when having a discussion on the matter.

So....having a child that is gay doesn't make one more qualified in knowing the hardships that their child has gone thru dealing with ignorant homophobes?

I get what you're saying MV but I imagine being a parent you feel a bit passionate about things that pertain specifically to your child.

first of all, i become a little reluctant to even have this discussion when the word "homophobe" is rolled out.  i think it's a meaningless word frequently used to shut down debate.

second... yeah, i'm sure the parents of a gay person would be well aware of the challenges faced in life by their gay kid.  it doesn't mean they should get license to regulate use of the word "fag" any more than the parent of an overweight kid should regulate use of the word "fatso".

we all have our triggers.

Well I wasn't calling you a homophobe, and I see your point, using that term can make it seem as if I would be implying that which would as you say shut down debate or discussion. So yeah, definitely don't think you're that. I was saying that it's relevant to how one feels.

Now, as to your point on if they have a license to regulate the use of a word, no, they don't, I agree with the point you're making. I was merely pointing out as to why a parent might feel defensive, offended, and guarded when hearing the usage of that word. Which as much as they don't have a right to regulate the use of that word, no one who uses that word has the right to regulate how some one emotionally reacts to it's use.

I think it's just a continuation of his self promotion as being unusually psychic.

You are both hateful Jorchaphobes. I'm reporting you all to Davemods. May God have mercy on your pizza rolls.

If you have to put a label on the no good goddamn selfish son of a bitch, MV's more of a censorshipphobe - who freely acknowledges the validity of not being allowed to yell "fire" in an occupied theater. On most days.

Fair enough.  I'm offensive enough that I generally avoid words that I know others are likely to take issue with.  However, I have yet to really care what others say that I find offensive- somehow, I just carry on. While I cannot tell others what should not offend them, I also refuse to tell them what they should take offence to...

I have known women who were happy to be "fag hags" and the self-described fags who were happy to have them as friends.  I have also known transgender people who felt more than a little unwelcome in the LGBT community and faced discrimination even from those who "should" have welcomed them- and heard the names they were called...  In the end, I concluded it was not really the words, but the actions and the intent that was what hurt them.

The fact is that a word is exactly that.  I will not tell you that you must be offended by it, but I also do not expect to be told that I must take offence to it..  I honestly try to live my life not really caring what is said unless it is said with complete hatred and malice.  I cannot bring myself to care if two friends jokingly (and even lovingly) call one another fags.  I may take offence if it is used during a gay bashing incident (even then, I would like to think that there is a far bigger issue than what word is said during the beating... Using a less offensive word while beating on somebody does not really help things...)

That is kind of the point- I do not know that I have used the word since grade 5 either in an endearing way or as a hateful word... However, I don't really care if somebody else does.

Ever since that Supernatural episode with grey goo coming out of the meat I am freaked out by things like that. But, I will run to the store and email you that faux turkey right away. I may have to fax the cheese product though.

Wow, the one word that everybody takes offense to...

Also, I never thought I would quote Bringham Young... but I found this and thought it was kind of interesting...

“He who takes offense when offense was not intended is a fool, yet he who takes offense when offense is intended is an even greater fool for he has succumbed to the will of his adversary.”

Missing this is what happens when I let myself get sidetracked... Great video.  I had clicked the picture at first rather than the link at first...

I loved the shot of the never ending fire escapes- somehow that kind of "spoke" to me.
