It sounds like crap . It's been mine since about 1970. I think my dad bought it in 1961. There were far better receivers even back then... but it was mine... and I love it. Even more so since my dad passed away in 2009.

The model uses an external speaker. It's really a general coverage receiver, though it has a standby switch so it could used with a separate transmitter in a ham radio system.

If you want to listen to Art's show on shortwave with vintage equipment and better fidelity- find a used Grundig Majestic radio circa the 1950s. The smaller ones can be found cheaply. If you buy it, make sure the owner has removed the asbestos block used for mounting the electronics.

Otherwise, any modern shortwave radio will perform better than the NC-190. I have personal reasons for loving mine

Do they have an app? I think I'll feel rebellious listening to shortwave on an app on my smartphone instead of through tunein.

The shortwave station does stream online. So no worries!!  Im in indiana.  Ill be able to listen in my backyard with my portable.  And some coniac.

Many of the shortwave broadcasters folded or went religious due to the confluence of the end of the cold war, and the coming of the internet. I'm not religious, so it kinda killed the shortwave listening thing for me.

However, I'll listen to Art on shortwave.

Even though I have the latest devices and will likely listen to Art via my iPhone w/Bluetooth speaker, I still have a fondness for vintage radios, vinyl, etc.  It's good he'll be on shortwave as a back up (should the Internet ever go down.) Not to mention for those who still have no access.

Automated transmitters used to check for radio propagation are usually called beacons.

If you can hear a beacon in your particular area, then the frequency you are listening to is propagating. They are part of a monitoring system of radio conditions. Radio conditions are not static- they change constantly... one night I might be able to talk to the Ukraine. Another night I might talk to California, and during a geomagnetic storm, I might not be able to make it across the street.

Radio is an artistic sciency thing.
