Things That Annoy You

Started by onan, May 22, 2011, 01:41:35 AM

Last night or the night before the lady that eats bugs was on and Snorry asks about eating 'peasants' and there was a sort of guest pause and Snorry corrects himself with 'peasants the bird not the people. I was stunned he did not know Pheasant was the word.

Heh, not me

Yeah, I'm not surprised the turkey Noory wouldn't know a pheasant from a peasant.  Not in the least.

I wonder where the Snorge is with the word 'pleasant'

I don't know why but both my gf and I found Seinfeld to be stupid. Tried to watch it and couldn't. Same went for Friends and the one with Kelsey Grammer after he did Cheers.

I did love Cheers tho. She hated it along with M.A.S.H.
To each their own. You and I agree about "Cheers". It's my fav' sitcom from the '80s. I like "Newhart" too. About the screen crawlers, I know what you mean about the grammar errors and spelling mistakes. The unnecessary abbreviations bug me too. Some of them are just a few letters shy of a complete word. Why not just show the whole word?

Keep him out of poor neighborhoods on holidays; it could be dangerous. He might try to stuff somebody.

It makes you think.
I heard *that*! That was Nucky, the Cable Guy, getting in touch with his inner redneck.

And greetings to Mr. Nucky Nolan! Come back, Shane!
Thanks, Sardondi. Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in. Speaking of comings and goings, please join the party. Where did you go, oh, Sardondio, our forum turns its lonely eyes to you.

He's actually a cannibal. It was a Freudian (or Fraudian) slip. I'm more of a Jung man, but both men have merit. Sometimes, despite what Noory says, a coincidence is just a cigar.

The General

Re-inventing geographical terms out of political correctness annoys me.
Calling "Western Asia" the Middle East is just too Euro-centric, I guess.

First he would have to be mentally present.

Adding to the things that annoy me list, people who put videos on youtube showing shape-shifters. Really??? I'll give you most politicians are evil, but shape shifting lizards? Come on people.

stevesh

Charles Fucking Barkley.

Juan

Every time they have a 2-shot, Kenny Smith looks like he wants to deck Barkley. It's hilarious.

Speaking of general stupidity or mispronunciation, I heard a classical music announcer earlier today talking about "Chairman Meow" (Mao).  Sounded like something Noory would say.  Chairman frickin-Mee-ow.  I once had a student in a junior college course who'd never heard of Hitler.  Not a clue who he was.  I weep for the future.

Wow. Fornicate me to lachrymosity. The Onion would pass on that as simply too ridiculous for a send up, and go for something more believable. And when reality is beyond parody, well, we get dogs and cats living together.

WOTR's experience is not a revelation. My high-school daughter is constantly relaying all the stuff she's surprised her peers have never heard of. Many can't get past the most recent president, let alone anything that happened before they were born.

I hereby nominate the above-indicated phrase for inclusion in the top-right corner of this interwebs site.

I had to look it up  ;D   ... and second the nomination.

As a teacher of composition, I have to shake my head at the spelling efforts of some of my students.  I had a student once who meant to write "guinea pig" and wrote instead "genie pig".  So I drew a little picture of what I imagined a genie pig might look like.  I have since had an unofficial genie pig award for the most atrocious misspellings.  I regularly read about "the pubic library".  I also once had one of my students ask for a little more time to turn in his paper due to some "unfortunate circumcisions".  (Are there any other kind once you're an adult?)

That is hilarious.  I can picture teachers giving out tiny statuettes of the 'genie pig' as awards for bad spelling.

Oh, I suspect that if we did such a thing we'd find ourselves in front of the Dean pretty quickly.  We sort of live in an everybody-gets-a-trophy society now, don't we?  It's not really a meritocracy.

I have to wonder how many of your genie pig winners are journalism majors.    Here's proof from just two of today's news headlines that sentence diagramming is no longer being taught:

If he was really dead, why did they shoot him?  Has the zombie apocalypse begun?

Man holds burglar at gunpoint in bathrobe

What motive did the burglar have for wearing a bathrobe?   Sexual fetish?

Funny stuff!  Actually, speaking of fetishists, back when I was in law enforcement (jeez, I sound like ol' Inspector Luger now from Barney Miller), we arrested a guy who'd been breaking into the sororities and stealing unmentionables, do-me pumps, and so forth.  During questioning, here was the gist of his story:  "I was walking down the street and some people called me over to join their party.  I went in and somebody slipped something into my drink.  Realizing I was in the company of unsavory people, I hurried out of the house.  Whatever they gave me had begun to affect me, and I must have falled through the open window of that sorority.  Well, I opened the first door I saw, trying to get outside, but it was the closet.  All these nighties and such started attacking me and ending up in my pockets and backpack.  So I got out of there and fell into this bureau.  All the drawers started flying open and panties came shooting out at me and worked their way into my coat.  Finally, I fell back out the open window and was running down the street trying desperately to get home.  That's when you good folks found me, thank God!"

The arresting officer said, "Is that really the story you want to go with in front of a judge and jury?"

He broke down and admitted that maybe he had a thing for girly garments.   :-*  I think Sardondi is a former prosecutor.   I suspect he's heard similar stories.

Actually better stories tended to come from ER personnel about the things they removed from various recti: "Slipped and fell in the shower, Doc. Million-to-one shot." Of course they never could really say what they were doing in the shower with an 18-inch screwdriver or a tactical baton.

I also used to hear weird stories about the things they found lost in the folds of extraordinarily obese people -- remote controls, old sandwiches.  Oh, I recall a young college girl who called in requesting a female response only:  she'd been pleasuring herself with a mixer (electric?) and it got stuck.  We humans are inventive creatures, eh?

Any references to "God's will" brings out the devil in me.

The Onion used to have a daily paper in San Francisco. One of their classic prank stories was the one where someone's household cats went to war over who got to play with a paper bag. You have to have cats to know why it was hilarious.

The problem with the youth of today is that they get their information either from entertainment shows or the Comedy Channel. Their attention span is minimal and they find history to be boring which is sad. Of course, if they'd had teachers who made it INTERESTING like I had, that would help.

Just look at the man on the street interviews conducted by Jay Leno or the guy who's on O'Reilly some time. Its sad and pathetic how both adults and young people know so little about current affairs, our history and our laws and the Constitution.

Back to things that annoy you for a minute.

I've read that it takes a better antenna to get AM radio on an Ipad/Ipod/Iphone and that's why you can only get FM radio on them without using an app.

I walk and ride my bike a lot and most sports broadcasts are on AM as well as most talk shows.

Really irks me that I can't listen to baseball, football or talk shows when I go out without buying a separate radio. I own 2 Ipods, am going to buy a third because I've run out of room for music and I guess in May or June I'm finally going to have to break down and buy an Iphone. I want it for the music and the net when I go out. I don't have many people to call anymore. I do all that from home usually, though I'm thinking of getting rid of my home phone if I could because the Iphone would cost me just as much every month.

I know that there are apps out there that get stations, but you would think that someone at Apple would figure out that not everyone listens to FM. I don't know of formats other than news and music that are on FM or any that come to mind anyway.

Oh, one other thing. Art got put into the radio hall of fame.

Will there be a podcast hall of fame one day ?

My late friend Glenn worked for years as a volunteer in SF General Hospital. He used to tell me stories about the people who would come in with various things stuff up their anal and vaginal cavities such as frozen foods of all kinds, light bulbs, Coke and Pepsi bottles, champagne bottles, florescent tubes, frozen pops, doorknobs and G*d knows what else. One guy was brought in one night and had major surgery on his anus because HIS light bulb shattered inside of him and was frozen to boot. No gerbils, frozen or otherwise though.

People do really bizarre things with inanimate objects.

I recently saw this one.
