Yeah, we still have it a lot better than many countries but there are troubling developments. Frankly I've always thought things like TOR, PGP, Anon-remailers and the whole internet in general etc were "government ops" anyway and just a way to snare criminals, or blackmail people, with a simple strategy of making people think they have some privacy or anonymity. But I agree with you on Rule 41 changes and the like. The stuff just passed in the UK is crazy.

What scares me is with the sheer power the internet had over the US elections and Brexit, one has to think "the powers that be" are going to do everything they can to shut this down. What concerns me is Trump is going after net neutrality while making bizarre statements saying net neutrality infringes on conservative news outlets and relating it to the Fairness Doctrine which is a real WTF?

Rule 41 is terrifying. I've been reading about it as much as I can. The most concerning thing is it's extremely vague and despite congressional inquiries the FBI isn't saying anything about it. Any way you slice it, it's completely insidious. It could be as small as the FBI being able to go through fewer steps to get a search warrant and do things like judge shop until they get one to legally being able to outright hack millions of computers through malware and backdoors. There's a group of Senators who are trying to fight it including Al Franken but it seems more symbolic than anything.

That certainly seems credible.  The article was accompanied by so many pictures.  The publication likely outbid fox news for the exclusive story from the minimum wage hotel staff.

I wouldn't put it past her.  But you know that Fox news would pay better than "the burning platform" if this were a real story.

That evil Soros is everywhere.  Now he even wanted to make sure that votes were counted correctly.  The bastard!

Where's Soros?...

Yeah, that was his ultimate goal.  He's such a friend to democracy and to our republic.

This should be taken to the security/tech thread but I think the Rule 41 and the changes recently made in the UK are more of a "now we can use it in court" thing versus a "now we can do it thing." They already are using various methods to spy, data-mine, or intercept things on the internet. But, in some cases, that stuff cannot (or they don't want) it brought into court or as evidence (like with the Stingray stuff that eventually came out) but they use to bring about a larger case or just for fun (I recall some stories of cops and contractors using databases and surveillance for ex-girlfriends etc.) Also, remember it is also now perfectly legal for the US government to use propaganda and disinfo on the American citizens* (Smith-Mundt Act voided a few years ago.)

ps: on the civil side I saw an article that that Theil guy had a novel company that uses algorithms, maybe lite AI, to search out "winnable" cases based on jurisdictions, jury patterns, demographics, Judges, law, case law, etc so that a plantiff or lawyer can "plug in" the details and it spits out the best place to file, chances of winning, whether to file at all, etc.

Hillary Clinton’s night on the 9th of November went from a celebration to an absolute meltdown once the election unexpectedly turned on her, leaving Trump as the victor. Some of the remnants of Hillary Clinton’s rampage in the private VIP area was discovered by the hotel custodial staff the day following the election.

Hillary Clinton’s post election celebration plans included hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of fireworks, live performances by various celebrities, such as Cher, who came believing that Hillary was going to win the election, a five-hundred-thousand-dollar special effect glass ceiling that she would break through in a dramatic display once she walked out on stage at her H.Q., among millions of dollars worth of other celebratory preparations, all paid for by the Clinton Foundation in full.

The most notable damage was located deep in the VIP room of the Clinton camp. A custom 150 inch ultra HD TV, a gift from the Saudi Arabian government, was found with a broken screen. The damage was caused by a $950,000 bottle of champagne that was believed to have been thrown at the screen by the former presidential candidate some time during the election.

Early in the morning, the custodial staff were greeted by flipped-over tables as the floors were covered with expensive food, drinks, and appetizers. Broken champagne flutes and gilded silverware were also seen scattered around the would-be party room.

The most telling sign of a massive meltdown was the cake. The pastry that had once proudly displayed the presidential seal, was violently flung against the walls in chunks. A broken topper from the cake in the shape of the white house was discovered lodged firmly into the drywall near the dessert table.

The Clintons have always been such a class act - together and individually.

Remember on their way out of the White House how they stole a bunch of furniture and their staff trashed the the place?

If Hillary won, the Kotch brothers (or Trump himself) would have funded a recount.  Who cares if there is a recount and somebody wants to blow millions?  Are we concerned that every vote actually be counted correctly?

He's just a piece of shit all around.  From a Nazi collaborator early in life, to destroy the economies of several south east Asian countries by short selling their currencies at a time their central banks were trying to shore things up and stay afloat, and now spending his billions to undermine as much as he can here.

Wonderful fellow.  If you want to stand up for him, feel free.

See, leftist con-job all along.

You DO realize that everyone says the recount is to ensure that the machines were operating properly, don't you?  No one is seriously considering overturning the election.

The irony of having the side that assured everyone that there is no voting fraud or rigged machines questioning the results of the election is delicious.  I wonder if such civic duty would have happened if Clinton had won.

We can only hope.  I think machines are sometimes delivered to the polling locations with votes already on them.  I don't think there is enough security and those machines with no paper printouts are particularly prone to rigging.

But then, I am also against the electoral system.  The states actually have different laws, disbursing the electoral votes differently, so the vote is never uniform in fairness.  In some states if 49% vote one way and 51 the other, ALL of the votes go to the 51% candidate, meaning almost half the population is disenfranchised.

There should be points at which we all agree, no matter what our politics are, and fair elections should be one of those issues.
I don't think it's a bad idea to demand proof of citizenship in order to vote, but for some reason that is not a pressing issue until right before an election.  NOW is the time to press such an issue, when the people who are elderly or live away from facilities can ensure that they are ready four years from now.

I live in NH and you must present ID to vote.  If you don't have a drivers license or passport your cheapest option is $20 for a state non-driving ID.  That should not be viewed as an impediment to voting.  There are so many things you must present ID for already.

This is priceless.

An obese 60 year old woman gets shoved by a man onto the concrete and she doesn't have one single identifiable injury?  She has a cell phone but isn't able to get one shred of evidence of the existence of this man who was walking along the sidewalk?  Not one person witnessed this attack, nor did the police who arrived find any evidence of the existence of this man wearing a visible red hat?

Right, Jill (((Stein))) received over $5 million from people to ensure the machines were operating properly.....

I didn't know "Correct the Record" was still in operation.

King, they ALL seem to say this.  I think someone should ensure that the machines are operating properly.  It's a good thing for ALL of us.

Stein embarrassed herself even further last night when she admitted she didn't understand that balloting machines are not connected to the internet. LOLZ... Completely dismisses her "hacking" theories...pathetic...

Hmmmm.  The liberals endless sea of tears would turn to endless rage if the question was even raised had Clinton won.
But their rage would be justified because everybody that voted for Trump is a 'tard racist and life member of Stormfront, right?
