Perhaps.  I would say most people are busy with their lives, don't care about politics, and don't follow it.  Those who are interested consume an awful lot of Fake News, then believe they are more informed than everyone else.  When they get together with like minded friends, they all agree with each other, and convince each other anyone who doesn't agree with them are all a bunch of dumb backwoods yokels - or worse.

When they emerge from their little left wing echo chamber bubbles, they are completely unprepared and incapable of discussing the issues of the day coherently or intelligently. When they can't win arguments from the ''yokels'' - on issues they expected to win easily - they get flustered and upset, and start in with the name-calling, lying, and smearing.  After awhile they withdraw back to their safe spaces all frustrated.

It's not really their fault.  They've mostly only heard one side of any given issue in school, from media, at college, from Hollywood - unless somewhere along the line they were introduced to an alternative source that either presented the other side, or presented both sides fairly, and they approached it with an open mind.  I blame the national Republican Party for not going out and explaining their positions at every opportunity.  The way Reagan did.

To date it's the ''Progressives'' out rioting, burning our cities, physically blocking roads and bridges, physically blocking access to speakers, attacking the police.  Egging on violent protesters.  Advocating killing police.  ''Joking'' about killing the president.  We've now even had one of them triggered to the point of shooting a Congressman and trying for more.  We have these idiots out looking for anyone who doesn't agree with them, and attacking them as ''Fascists'' (oh the irony).  We have bands of rioters calling themselves ''Antifa'' (anti-fascists), and physically attacking other protesters and bystanders (again the irony). 

There is nothing like this going on from any other political group in the US.

I used to think corruption via special interest ($$$) was the American political systems biggest problem. I was wrong. Instead it is they absolute vile that each side spews at each other. I don't know what the solution is. I think we might be past the point of no return, I can't see these either side working together.

It isn't an all Trump thing either. Trump is making the situation worse, but idiots like Pelosi Schumer, etc are equally at fault. The media is the main issue, on both sides. Everything gets blown out of proportion thanks to the 24 hour news cycle and need to make ratings to make money. It is a real shame. But when you have people calling each other Nazi's as both sides are doing, there is no putting the genie back in the bottle.

I fear the situation might be terminal. How far to we have to go before American are willing to accept an Augustus type figure just because they are tired of the dysfunction?

This has been going along since at least the 80s, but up until the election of Obama it was pretty one sided on the part of the Democrats.  Oh sure, it would be pointed out the Liberals were advocating socialism, were often playing into the hands of the Soviets when it came to military spending and foreign policy, and their party included the hard left and other degenerates.  Rush would make fun of them and Ann Coulter would respond to them in kind.

But that was about it.  It wasn't until the election of Obama, with his associations with people like Rev Wright, Bill Ayres, etc, that people decided they would no longer shrink away when called racists, bigots, sexists, ''homophobes'', and Nazis by the left wing,  They would no longer just endure the charges of wanting to poison the air and water, tha they hated minorities, old people, children, etc, etc, etc, or feebly try to defend themselves. 

They realized the Democrat Party has been seized by the hard left ''Progressives'', which meant the country was at risk - the name calling, lies, and smears no longer mattered, and they began pointing out who the ''Progressives'' are, why their policies were unacceptable and dangerous, why we don't decide things in this country with street violence, and responding to the name calling and smears in kind.  There is no reason for this to be one sided - throughout history this has been part of the Left's ongoing propaganda campaign in their attempt to seize power.  It's what Alinsky advocated the Left in this country do.  Since they aren't going to stop, I don't see the response to it ending either.  Face it, it's effective.

What we need to do is remove the ''Progressives'' from office - and other positions of influence within society, and stop listening to them.

Douglass, had recently retired, then died, but was still well known.  He was considered Very Liberal.  He would be considered a ''right winger'' by today's Party, or at least not reliably ''Progressive'' enough to be trusted with an appointment to a seat on the federal court by a Democrat president.

Someday when our noble scholars are able to be objective about the 20th century, and I don't expect this to be for a hundred years, it would be interesting to read an in depth study of how communists succeeded in infiltrating our country in the name of progressivesm, liberalism, etc...in the 1950s. That the black lists and McCarthy hearings and all that were basically spot on. The modern left popped up soon after in the 60s with all the worthless protesting and summer of love who's participation has been exaggerated by a million by the left running the media and education industry.

Nowadays more time is spent in school on the 60s than WW2, the most important few years in the history of the modern world. The 60s were completely worthless in the scope of things. However the people who celebrated the 60s went on to take over the media and education industry, and for this our country and the world has to suffer their stupidity for a century to come.

This is typical revisionist history by the left, done so because they can't stand that a Republican Is responsible for freeing the slaves.
