I vote that it is possible.  The thing is that like 9/11 and Sandy Hook, the Boston marathon, the gay Florida night club and every other recent conspiracy theory, there will be a limited number of people who believe it 100%.  There will be LOTS of people who think that "it is possible."  But you will not convince them to go to war over it.  You need more followers of Jones (not Jim Jones, but rather Alex Jones) before you can really declare that the country will go to war.

I think you will have lots of skeptical people, but not enough who are willing to spend their lives in prison if things don't go right.  Besides, who does your militia shoot? Anybody identified as lefties?  The conspiracy theory can be completely correct- but you need specific targets... And names are not likely to emerge for many years.

The Republicans now have their greatest control of government ever. They have the Executive branch, veto proof majorities in the House and Senate, 33 Governorships as well as control of 32 state legislatures. The Supreme Court is currently divided 4/4 between liberals and conservatives. The court will soon be 5/4 in favor of conservatives. Ruth Bader Ginsburg is 83 and probably won't hold on much longer and will be replaced, further strengthening the conservative hold on the Court.

And then here's Donald Trump fucking up all of their plans that they've been making all these years. Obviously they would like to get rid of him and have a true Reagan-Conservative like Pence take over. You can't impeach Trump because you can't have him leave office in a dishonorable manner. That would ruin Pence's chances at being elected in 2020. He has to be removed in manner that will be beneficial to the Republican establishment. Good old fashioned martyrdom. The assassin must "act alone" so his actions can't be attributed to any one group. A muslim or immigrant won't do. That would scare the public further against muslims and immigrants and the Republican establishment is very much pro open borders. The assassin must be a white man acting alone. A deranged person with no particular political beliefs. When they give his short life biography in the media he will have both far left and far right literature and writings in his possessions and thus you won't be able to pin him down ideologically. The media will push whatever storyline given to them.

No one really wants Pence to be president except Democrats and old school (corrupt) Republicans. i suppose Trump picked the wrong guy.
