Augmented Reality

Among the features I (probably too optimistically) hope for in my next mobile device is AR--specifically live video of the street I'm walking down with real-time GPS and POI data overlaid upon it. When I can get a pair of Gibson-esque virtual light glasses that do this, we'll really be rockin'. ;-)

In the meantime, does anyone know of any existing or soon to exist mobile phones/devices that feature this?

They're doing augmented reality with the new iPhones. If I understand correctly, the new, less-laggy 3G cameras, combined with the relatively large screen, make AR possible where it was not in previous incarnations of the iPhone/iPod Touch.

Thanks for that info. Unfortunately, in addition to my principled refusal to buy another Apple products (reasons stated elsewhere), learning such things as the fact that one cannot remove the battery from the iPhone, for example, are enough to remove it from my consideration.

I know AR will continue to develop and gradually permeate the bevy of offerings out there, and for this and other reasons I am content to wait a few years till in my view it makes sense to invest in one of them.

MV/Liberace!

actually, i used to bark about the iphone battery being unremovable as well.  however, time seems to have proven that it's not been an issue.  that said, my phone of choice right now would be google's new nexus one.  KILLER, killer phone.

DAMN that's fancy - and pricey.  Still - I'm mesmerized.
