I don't think Ian is the best. He's probably the best of the worst as far as Coast is concerned. I would be all for him taking over as full time host at this point. The show is getting so boring and predictable under Noory, it may be more tolerable with Ian at least.

I agree.  Art and George let guests say whatever they want no matter how stupid, crazy, or illogical.  Whereas Ian questions guests and makes them prove they are worth listening to, instead of insulting their listeners' intelligence.

Hi rodanders, nice to see new people posting and I must respond to differ with you on the above comment in red.  First off, George Noory has revealed his mission as one to "protect" listeners from guests, i.e., his comment earlier this week "I cannot protect you from the callers."  Obviously he is not protecting us from long boring expositions of how vitamins work in the body, so what do you think he is protecting us from?  How about extreme topics, truly weird/crazy people, oddball inventors and any scientists who may be rigidly adhering to facts.

Art Bell, on the other hand, relished extreme topics, truly weird/crazy people and drew them out into Entertainment.  For example, J.C.  With George, J.C. just sputtered into oblivion because George soothed and appeased him, agreeing with everything.  Notice he has not called back.  Art fed that fire, inquiring about the wife and other aspects of J.C., let us peep into the life of an extreme Christian fundamentalist and leading to the question in all of our minds, how does a person get like this?

George cannot unwind a yoyo.  He just doesn't know the next logical question.  When I was a detective, I had the job of mapping strategy for the investigations.  Someone asked me how I knew what to do first, second, third.  I answered honestly, "I don't know."  It just comes to me, like it's obvious.  I believe it's a gift and there is a corresponding gift that you hear on radio.  The gift of knowing the next natural question plus a body of knowledge to draw on to ask substantive questions, PLUS just plain old charisma.  We see plenty of radio and TV hosts who have these and then, too bad, they have impaired judgment (Glen Beck) and overshoot the audience.  Or they don't manage the odd combination of celebrity ego and humility.

IMHO, these qualities don't always couple easily with high IQ.  In my family, the people with the highest IQ have the most social problems, so charisma becomes an issue.  Among the Coast hosts, I like George Knapp the best because he takes the time to prepare for the show.  No amount of fawning compensates for lack of basic preparation, i.e., read the book or at least the CliffNotes.  Not everyone has the ability Art did to rely on his own knowledge base and experience with years of interest in the topics.  Art could NOT read a book and give a detailed intro on the subject of XX based on his own experience with it, then he could say, "And tonight, a very special show which casts a new slant on the subject...."   The guest starts in and Art asks questions like, "Which is more reliable, mitochondrial DNA testing or carbon dating the tools?" (the guest answers) and Art asks, "What do you do if they disagree?"

This is light years better than a George Noory response, which is the next question on his list.  If you listen (and I challenge all you lurkers reading this), you do not find him asking a logical follow up question on any topic other than religious-related (existence of God, angels, reincarnation).  These are the topics where no one can say he is wrong. Unlike geography or math.

George Knapp asks the logical follow up questions without much of the fun element.  Instead of asking "What do you do if they disagree?"  George might ask "Which method do scientists choose if both are present?"  Which is not as good a question because, of course, the guest will say, "They do both."

Making a show interesting involves drawing the human beings out of the science and letting us into their world.  "Letting" guests talk without interruption is what Noory claims to do (and doesn't) and it results in a show which is just a stage for George's infomercials.

George can unwind a yoyo... granted, not purposefully but like a kid with a glass of milk, he can empty the glass and never get a taste.

Ian is a superior interviewer. But, to me, the suggestion of a weekly exposure to Ian makes me cringe. Ian's interview never seem to explore outside his own beliefs. Art was very good at going beyond his own belief system yet seldom letting the guest travel into absurdity. Perhaps that is the ingredient missing at c2c now.

Very good point.  I'm going to keep that in mind as I listen to the various hosts.

I generally enjoy Ian's skepticism, but it indeed can bog down interviews. He also can get hung up on a certain subject to an irritating extent, for instance his "volunteer army" quarrel with Dale Brown last week, he went back to that subject at least three times even though it was clear there was a stalemate between them.

But his skepticism is selective at times...he lets that self-aggrandizing crank Howard Bloom ramble endlessly with his rather dubious research and shallow sociology.

Let's see how Ian handles the topic of 'superhero physics' tonight. Could be gold. Most likely will not be, though.

I think I'm a sadist for wanting to listen to this.

I'll tune into the first hour, but after that I'm going to bed. heheh  The topic sounds rather silly.

This is just drivel plain and simple.  Can't operate the phones properly for a timely debate on the relative superpowers of imaginary godlike figures.  For the love.  Why can't we be talking to the whistle blower and the two govt employees who have suffered horrendous career consequences for revealing that the Army Corps of Engineers was responsible for leveling an American CITY and not one person so much as lost their parking place in consequence.  We reward mistakes by making them invulnerable for lawsuits and they just plant those levies on sand.  And build a levy 10 feet right next to one 14 feet.  Water isn't smart, but it's not that stupid.

Back to what's important, let's see, is it more important to have kryptonite on hand for an enemy superman or to be able to command the creatures of the sea.

Just listening make s me feel guilty.  I feel like Nero while Rome was burning...

Yep, this is exactly what I'm talking about when I dis Ian. Comic books and zombies appeal to him in a way I will never understand.

No matter that Ian is intelligent and in many ways a compassionate man, both qualities that rank high with me, he returns to his childhood interests with the same frequency George reiterates his doomsday warnings.  :(

It's his nerd tendencies. Those two subjects(comic books and zombies) have HUGE followings that always confounded me. For those of us who complain, I get the feeling there are five who love it...

Yes, what a lot of psychobabble and general applesauce.

"Gee, would the Dark Knight-era Batman ("graphic novel" or film version) be limited because he is acting out of an angry place, because of the murder of his parents, rather than a place of empathy? Why are we so fascinated by the Joker? They could call the 'jaws of life' the Hands of Superman! Let's compare Hindu gods to Marvel superheroes!"

Gotham Chopra sounds like a nice, bright guy, but that was a niche program plain and simple. And i LIKE comics.

But, after all, it was Chopra's dad who recently apologized for accidentally causing an earthquake with his all-powerful mad meditation skills.

Ian is a lover of nepotism as well...

Superheroes comic book show guest? = Chopra's kid
Zombies show guest? the son of Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft.

With the abundance of comicbook/superhero/avenger movies coming out and the higher awareness of graphic novels & comics (thick books vs. thin books?), it's pretty current and not such a shocking topic, especially for Ian.

Superhero/Sci-Fi physics has always been a topic of interest and discussion.  I remember in the fax/BBS days a package/article that circulated discussing how Star Trek's warp speed was possible.  Whether it was valid or not, it was discussed.

Ah, the neverending battle between bigfoot traditionalist and fans of Ian's "I'll do a show on whatever the heck I wanna" style of c2c programing.  And finally I get a reason to post a pic of the coolest character to come out of...anywhere...in the past...30 years?

Hit Girl.

Ian's show was different. But that is needed. I thought the best moment was when the caller asked about the priest on tonight and possible antisemitism. Ian cut something out the caller said--and gave no real hope that Noory would ask good questions. Loved that.

Eddie, Eddie -- the difference between your listing above and Ian's Comic Book fetish is obvious--wacky and weird REAL people are the core of what C2C is all about.  Otherwise we would be funneling into the narrow crack place of discussing whether or not Q always knew everything or has progressed to know everything.

Wouldn't you MUCH rather (c'mon man, honestly now)  MUCH MUCH rather have a guest who thinks he's a horse than have a guest who is an author who wrote a novel about a man who thinks he's a horse?????????

This is the difference.

Yes, I will concede, I prefer REAL kooks to pretend kooks every day of the week. The interview with the "cured"-(well,not so much) schizophrenic was compelling.

The DB Cooper stuff initially interested me-I've long been fascinated by the case, but it became a bit of tail chasing after a bit.

Well, it's Sunday afternoon, time to practice my X-ray vision with my zombie legions.

JustOneFix

I've said it before here, but this zombie fad is one of the most asinine in a long line of asinine recent fads.

Zombies are so overplayed it's beyond cliche, give it a god damn break already.

I am not trying to berate the zombie fans or the comic book dorks, but there are alot of weird & kooky people out there who don't read comics or have a hard on for zombies, I'm one of them.

b_dubb

i think zombies are overplayed.  and vampires.  and werewolves.  the thing that get s me the most about zombies is how hard they to work to make the idea that the dead can reanimate spontaneously seem plausible.  a dead brain is a dead brain.  the best zombie movie (imho) is 28 Days later.  i could see a super potent strain of rabies decimating a population and turning everyone into a bunch of  ... wait ... are they zombies if they aren't dead? no?

Not to mention that Saturday's Superhero Show was a thousand times better than the monumental excrement that aired on Sunday with Noory and Michael Diamond.

I don't recall Ian mentioning zombies once Saturday, yet on Sunday the ZOMBIE wave came full force as Brother Michael Diamond RELENTLESSLY evoked this dead Jesus fellow.

The most famous zombie, the most famous vampire (blood drinker), etc etc etc etc.

Noory sat there like the dead parachuted soldier in LORD OF THE FLIES, occasionally jerking around from the hot air issuing from Diamond's ass.

The Superhero show was fine.  I just ignored Ian's Fan Boy mode and focused on the two authors.  While I winced at many of Ian's questions, I had no problem with Gotham's and Deepak's answers to those questions.

I wish to SATAN/GOD/BOB that Ian had "hosted" Michael Diamond Sunday.  THAT would have been a cage match the likes of not seen since the great IAN versus QUAYLE throw down!

The Quayle Ian match was funny as Hell until Ian allowed himself to be spanked later by C2C for having the temerity to stand up against the mighty Q.  Then Ian just looked like a stupid suit giving in to the NETWORK.

He's been trying to live it down ever since.... on many levels.

Meanwhile, this prick Diamond said he is doling out his belief system out of "charity."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Christ.

Christ Almighty.

Zombie Christ Almighty on a Scooter Wearing a Batman Cape.

As far as Deepak saying he caused an earthquake because he was meditating on Shiva.... I would be happy if he could just make my car magically move.

Because I'm sick of paying for the gasoline.

But we all know Chopra cannot move my car using his meditative mind, let alone initiate an earthquake.

Only Uri Geller can do that.

You've got it all wrong the good "brother" was a fantastic guest. The problem was the piss poor host. A good host would have needled and cajoled and raised the ire of such a guest. The truly committed are the most interesting when forced to commit.

The Michael Diamond show was AWFUL. I'm not Catholic, but I was astounded that Diamond could characterize John XXIII as a "demonic imposter", and Snoory never even uttered a "hey, wait a minute'.

On the other hand, I guess (since I'm not a member of the One True Church), I am hopelessly lost anyway.  ::)

I have a few relatives who share Brother Diamond's worldview, the dreariest set of depressives you'd ever meet. "Vatican II" consumes them and they are Johnny one-notes regarding the subject. I just toss my agnostic/bordeline atheism their way and watch them stew.

Gah! Ian did a show about superhero physics?!

I've gotta hear this. Does anyone know of where I can find it?

Was it last Saturday (ie, June 4)?

Thanks

you'll get it on Pirate Bay if your a torrent user!
Just saw that show up and read the show description. I find Punnet hard to handle at the best of times but I am intruiged.
