An interesting twist on the traditional New Year's black-eyed peas.

An interesting twist on the traditional New Year's black-eyed peas.

You know I love food traditions and would like to embrace this one, too, but I heard they are supposed to symbolize money and that kind of naked greed offends my Protestant sensibilities.  Same with Chinese New Year amulets and lucky 8s because they look like two coins and Japanese waving cats that are supposed to attract big spenders.  I'm hoping there is a better rationale because some tasty hot pork and beans would be just the thing for a cold winter day.

You can eat 'em because they are good! And a good way to use leftover ham and ham bone from Christmas etc meals. Or to honor Rip Torn and Sissy Spacek who are related to the Torn who helped popularize the tradition and expand Black-eyed Pea sales from the initial roots.

QuoteUniversity of Texas folklorist and dean of women Ruby Terrill Lomax said southerners believe “persons who ate black-eyed peas, a cheap and humble food, showed their humility and saved themselves from danger of wrath from the heavens because of any vanity they might have.”

Now that is more like it -- repent, repent!  Ok, next year.  This will be the second bit of Texas on the table after my uncle's pecans -- he has a little vanity ranch in the Panhandle.

Come to think of it, this is the only time of year I make ertesuppe with yellow peas because that is what Grandma did, usually on Christmas Eve and then reheated Christmas day when it is even better.  The concept is not entirely unrelated.

I don't know how far south you have to go for this tradition... But this is the first that I have ever heard of it...

Too late for this year. Perhaps black eyed peas next?  ;)

Precisely what I like about the holidays. I care for the consumer culture- but enjoy spending time with my family. I also like that most places close and people finally get to stop the rat-race for a few days...

Don't worry... there will be another 360 days where people are at their assigned stations in life ready to make your burger or sell you a pair of socks...

Thanks for bringing the thread back. This prediction certainly didn't age well.  :-[

At about 45 minutes in the above vid Bithead goes on a great YouTube rant that I think many here will relate to. He says the comments about the vid or article are the news now, not the content itself. ;)

Hope everyone had their black-eyed peas for good luck. I added some jalapenos and cerranos so as to be more friendly to our new voters and because, oddly, I still had some left over on plants despite officially it is winter.

I guess there was no prediction show on C2C? Mr.Norway 'taking the show in a new direction.' Those were sometimes fun with the crazy predictions and the ding-ding when reviewed by Art the next year.

Dave’s typical lame attempt is tonight.  A couple of his usuals calling in, no doubt.  Who doesn’t want to know what Annie from Bamy and Corny predict for 2021, before Dave skips out early.

2021 PREDICTIONS SHOW
First Half: Joseph Jacobs is an internationally known psychic who has counseled over 15,000 people since 1982. He will give his outlook and predictions for 2021. Followed by insights from Elizabeth Joyce, a modern-day mystic, author, and master spiritual teacher/healer who works through the risen power of the kundalini as a conduit.

Second Half: We continue our long-standing tradition of reading listener predictions from the past year, and recording new ones for the year ahead.

It’s still 5781 to me so whatever

Juan

I predict Cornelius will not get his pardon but will continue to call, Annie from Alabama will have one coherent call during the year, and Mike the Millennial will get the millennial business into every call.  Also, Mr. sNorway will continue to suck.

So, basically, maybe, with commercials and Norway's bumpers a good 10 minutes for both caller predictions and judging the last year's predictions. And that is assuming he doesn't play some bad Poe rendition or the faked morning show shock-jock bit about Bible ladies beating a roadrage person.  Happy New Year! I was hoping a guest host who might do it like the old days.

It gets better since Dave will be back on Sunday to celebrate his 19th year of suckage.

Second Half: Join George Noory and many special guests celebrating George's 19th anniversary hosting Coast to Coast AM.
