This is the Airyn, Asia - and shoot  - I forgot her name - but she's the Bell's "Yah-Yah" - A household helper and childcare person - live in - full time!

i hope all is well with them, too.  i feel compelled to say that i also hope art has learned from the bad decisions he made previously as a father.

I also want to say that I hope they are happy. Who wouldn't be if they are living in the Phillipines with US Dollars? I like Art's honesty about the cost of living and the happy meter there despite the poverty. Makes you think about chasing those granite countertops!

Also, I want to say how awesome he is for taking his cats with him. 18,000 bucks for traveling cats. I love Art!

Yes - I've thought that too - but I've also thought:  He's older, he's put everything abut their lives in the public eye, and - I hope his enthusiasm isn't for the novelty of it all!

Oh LORD yes!  This live in girl-of-all-work costs them $60 a month plus room and board!  I assume that's at least the going rate (IOW they're not being cheap about it) since they certainly can afford that and more (what would be the difference, for example, to someone like Art between $60 and $100?  Not much in the end) and he said she was a family friend of Airyn's side.

I spent part of a summer in Tegucigalpa, Honduras (see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tegucigalpa ) a beautiful, modern city which - while it is very close to the equator - is so high in the mountains the days are around 80 degrees - cool breezes - and the nights go down to about 50 - perfect for curling up under a nice wool blanket.

Despite the fact that this is a tourist city - I stayed in a very nice hostel - had a nice bedroom to myself - (did have to share a bath) got 2 huge meals a day (breakfast and dinner) and not only did the maid come and clean my room each day - but she picked up my clothes and used towels, and returned them laundered and folded before I was back for the evening!  It was the late 70's  -- so I'm sure it's not quite that cheap now - but still - I think I paid something like $25 US for all of that per week.

Anyway - I may have hijacked my own thread - but if you are ever up for a Central American Adventure - this is one place to look into.

About yayahs - Many American/Euro companies send them here to the US to work as nannies here in DC. There was one up the road from my parents' home who worked for a French diplomat. She claimed they treated her very badly and were uhhh French. My mom hired her once a week to do chores for us. My mom paid her 100 bucks I think - for less then 5 hours of work.

Anyway, one day she came with a new ipod and puppy and said that her employer got her an ipod. She asked my mom to "load songs" for her. So weird.

Anyway, one day, she showed up at the door sobbing, asking for 15,000 bucks USD!! She said that her dad needed a very important surgery and that she would pay them back. My dad offered to call the Philippines and ask for help. He also knew a Philippino doctor who could call and arrange for a free operation.

ANYWAY - the Philippino hospital found out that this girl worked in the USA, had USD, and knew "rich people", and refused to setup the surgery.

The girl kept asking for money. It was so frustrating for my parents. Her dad had the surgery finally, and he still passed away. When Art said that "it" is corrupt in Philippines, he is right. So sad that even though there is respect for elders, the opportunity to rip off others simply because they live in the USA is always there. The girl who works here makes a lot of money, but she's also living on DC standard costs - VERY HIGH. Rent/food/gas is expensive as hell.

Anyway, I found her to be shady and was very angry when my parents gave her 2,000 bucks for traveling. I don't think she has paid them back yet.
