Believe it or not, Midwestern accents are the preferred in broadcasting. Chicago is part of this (minus the slang). It is the US equivalent of British Received Pronunciation (RP) used on the BBC.  Many times midwesterners were made radiomen in the services.

BBC gone 'gansta' recently the RP is not 'politcially correct' but yeah one reason why lots of Canadian do US news, comedy, etc. Standard accentless (they tone down regional ones.) Also the dying Upper Midatlantic which was sorta our RP dying out. Interesting you here y'all and loss of "g" in places from from where it was regional.
