I'm actually a journalist for a living. The way scanners work is that you typically have an inside source in law enforcement who knows the frequencies/codecs and programs the scanner for you. Said source would also be a good funnel for information on a high-profile (by Pahrump standards) case like this.

That said, Pahrump media may not enjoy those types of connections, especially if they have an adversarial relationship with law enforcement. Still, police reports are public record and a standard FOIA/open records request would really be all you need to get that information.

So far I've seen nothing in the Pahrump Valley Times (the local newspaper of record) or KPVM, the local television station, concerning these incidents, which I find to be damned peculiar. I mean, maybe the media in Pahrump is completely inept. It's certainly not out of the realm of possibility. Art making this whole up would be peculiar as well, so I'm not sure how to apply Occam's Razor here.

In my experience, there are crime / fire photographers that listen to scanners, and then go to the scenes they think will be interesting for photo or video footage to sell to the papers and local news outlets.

I'm an avid scanner listener.  Its difficult to hear everything and easy to miss call outs on something like this.  This assumes the guy is actually listening to his scanners at that moment.  If he is having a pee, having dinner, enjoying his family, sleeping, nobody will know.

Yeah there is always an element of who pulls the water in a town too.

A good scanner listener can hear about 50% of the stuff happening with the police in a town the size of pahrump, IF they have a decent understanding of police operations and communications.  Of that 50%, you'll be lucky to see about 5-10% of the newsworthy stuff actually reach the media. 

A lot of people would shit their pants and buy guns and lawyers if they had any idea of the stuff going on in their town that they could hear on an average police scanner.  Otherwise they base their comfort factor on the crime that reaches the news, or they hear from their network of friends, etc.  They can be an eye opener, but they also open your eyes to how much you can miss.
