How about all the shoe-gazing mope-rock bands of the early/mid-90's.  I honestly can't remember any of their names, just their blurry slo-mo videos and overwrought lyrics.

I pretty much agree but i still like Jesus and Mary Chain

i was born at the end of 79, so i was in my early teens when all of that music was coming out.  age-wise, i was in the target demo.  all of my friends were soooo into it.

i now have some level of respect for nirvana, but at the time, i swear to god, when someone came to me saying "kurt cobain died," my response was, "who is he?"  i couldn't have been more disconnected from it all.

That's funny, I wondered if it was my speakers or something at the time, as I couldn't imagine a service touting their crystal-clear audio would knowingly put out something so tinny.

it definitely wasn't your speakers.  if your speakers were sentient beings, a piece of their soul likely would have died at the realization you were pumping sirius/xm music through them.

It wouldn't be right to leave out the most hated bands nobody outside whichever greater Tri-County Area they lived in ever heard.

Pretty much all of the current hipster bands who like to say "douche."  They don't even act macho enough to be gay.  I'd rather listen to Boy George.  He sounds better and could no doubt kick their little asses.

and btw... i said it's on par with an mp3 encoded at 96kbps, but since sirius/xm are using a proprietary codec to compress their audio, the artifacts it generates sound different than those created by poor mp3 encoding.  this makes imperfections stand out even more because your brain is almost "accustomed" to hearing poorly encoded mp3 audio after 20+ years of being exposed to music compressed by that codec.  there's a predictability there where your brain can almost be "trained" to fill in the gaps or ignore the rough edges.  when your brain hears the artifacts generated by sirius/xm's proprietary shit-bag codec, it all jumps out at you by a factor of 10x over mp3 artifacts, if that all makes sense.

i wouldn't necessarily argue with that, although i'm not a huge fan of either.

I postulate that there was a brief moment in music, just as the 80's pop bands were waning, but still pre-grunge, where there was some pretty good "indie/alternative" music like this coming out.  There was a show back then called 120 Minutes, like on Sun. nites or something which would showcase some of the good stuff imho.

R.E.M. and Crashtest Dummies were two of my favorites from that decade, even though both of them started in the 80's.

they were.  so many diametrically opposing things happening musically all at the same time, and very little of it is going to be remembered.

I think the demise of pop music can be traced to Aerosmith doing that cross-over rap song.

a reasonable contention.  and btw... add aerosmith to the list, since the thread title asked.  i would use the word "hate" to describe my assessment of that band.

Excellent, description! However, I have to make an exception for Dread Zeppelin, who deserve to be remembered for having the most imaginative band concept ever.

I hate the Beatles tribute shows and Pink Floyd tribute shows.

There's always that guy shaking his head sideways to look like an early McCartney and it makes me want to commit a felony.  Or that guy over-emoting while performing Comfortably Numb.

I misread something once and inadvertently watched the beginning of "Pink Floyd Australia" or whatever it was called, believing it was going to be Pink Floyd.  Jesus Microdot Christ.

I'm not saying they don't perform the songs correctly.  It's just... get the fuck over it.  There's a point where too much mimicry defeats the purpose of music as entertainment... if that makes any sense.

I don't get the appeal of tribute bands either, but there's a lot to be said for a kick ass Beatles parody band. Cheers, Batgod!

Parody is definitely the key.

As far as complete mimicry in a touring tribute show, I can think of one exception.  If you had several old and young black men who looked very much like various dead blues musicians and could perform exceptionally well... to the point that you felt like you were seeing ghosts.  And they would stay in character at all times, even if interviewed, like Spinal Tap.  And the show would really play up the supernatural aspect of the idea.

That I would watch/attend.

But to get the full effect, the show would have to follow the Chitlin' Circuit and make at least one stop at the inevitable crossroads to make a deal with "my Sweet Satan."

Tribute bands make up the most of the schedule of the Everett Historic theatre now. I've never seen a tribute show.

No shit, they are literally the kings of cocksuck. I know many people love them all these decades but I always wished they would go away, which they never did. They are corny as it gets and they are gross as fuck. The Cult could totally blow those ugly fucksticks away with just a walmart hoodie and only half a tambourine.

As much as I hate Aerosmith and think they are corny as fuck (as well as being in desperate need of facial transplants), I did like that Run DMC album a lot in 1986 and it was a gateway for me in terms of finding new music on my own. I would not have spent the past 30 years listening to and collecting and following and playing what I do now if I didn't buy that Raising Hell cassette when I did in 1986. Within a year I discovered Public Enemy and within 2 years was into hardcore punk music and American thrash metal and was consuming it like crazy by 1988. From that point I got into bands like Danzig who was only just starting up with the blues metal thing after a decade of more campy type stuff, but that band alone immediately took me backwards to Willie Dixon and Howlin' Wolf and people like that, plus Orbison and Cash who at this time were becoming relevant again, possibly more so than when they were in their prime.

I usually avoid personal comments here but you seem like a very unhappy man.

Whether or not I am miserable doesn't have much to do with the topic or my post. This isn't psychology class or depression diagnostics is it? If I was miserable, would it really matter? This is a lite thread with tongue-in-cheek comments about the bands we hate. It's the Deathrace2000 of threads. I was not being nasty, just direct. There is no reason to sugar coat anything, people dislike certain bands and that is fun and normal. That said, I am indeed miserable. But to me this thread is an escape from the reality of my misery and does not actually represent my miserableness as it is mostly just for fun. I am being honest and truly do not like any of the bands that I have cited.

I don't actually wish any misery or depression on any of those bands, I just hate them and pretend that they don't exist. I hate Stone Temple Toilets, but I would actually have preferred to have seen the singer survive the battle with himself. He was one unhappy camper. If I were as unhappy as him I would have beat him to the funeral home and done a better job of doing it, I would have made a fucking mess and had somebody else clean it up. Now that is misery. Atleast he didn't have somebody scrape his skull off the ceiling, so he is somewhat considerate in that aspect, and I am not sure if I am as courteous. I am unhappy and am very busy in life, therefore have no time for shitty music polluting my ears. Shitty music makes me violent and even more unhappy than my natural state of unhappiness and general dissatisfaction.

The diverse range of bands that I do like greatly outnumber the ones that I dislike. Plus I could write for days about each band that I do like while trying to lay out all of the infinite reasons as to why I think they are great. But it's not that kind of thread -- It's a hater thread!

I hate the bands I listed. I don't like the music and I can't stand the people in the bands. Many will disagree and that is life.

I am very opinionated about music. Some of my favorite popular bands are Black Sabbath, ABBA, Queen, X, Loretta Lynn, Kate Bush, Phil Collins, Judas Priest, Bad Brains, and Public Enemy. I think The Smiths are great and I wish I could write songs like that, but I can't. I can accept if people don't like them. It doesn't mean I cannot like the people that dislike the Smiths, it just means that they hate the Smiths.

Many hate ABBA but I think they are absolutely genius. Maybe the best pop band ever IMO. I am not going to be offended if somebody wishes they were dead. That just means at one point or another they had them shoved down their throat, probably when the same 14 songs were on loop for an 8 hour shift at a job and Dancing Queen was hurled at them 3-4 times a night against their will. That song totally misrepresents the band anyways. But all that said, Play Jimi Hendrix or Lenerd Skynarard around me and I might kick your balls in. I used to hate Judas Priest until I was in my late 20s or mid 30s, but now I love JP although they do have some shitty stuff in their back catalog which I think is disgusting and gross, but when they are good it totally outshines their shitty shit. The guitar work is phenomenal especially on the Painkiller and SFV albums. I grew up with Love Bites on the TV and whenever I saw it I would be like these guys fucking suuuuuuuuck. Today I blame media and not the band, as I was deceived all those years and exposed to only JP's shittiest shitty songs and videos. I have since watched their sets at US Festival 1983, Live Aid in 1985, and Irvine Meadows in 1991 and regret my previous opinion about them being corny and lame.

I have quit 2 jobs over the insane music repeatedly jammed down my fucking throat all god damn day long so I can relate to certain forms of hatred. CCR are still banned from my god damn ears. The Eagles just entered probation after a 22 year ban from my fucking ears. Previous job caused all this in the first place.

There is somebody I know who cannot stand The Tide Is High remake by Blondie. I love it as well as all of the original albums by Blondie until they broke up, but this person gets violent and clockwork orange if that song comes on, and they hate all Blondie songs no matter what because of it. They worked at a bank in the 80s and the song was played all the time, several times a day... Janet Reno pulled this shit at Waco... MK Ultra is easier done than explained.
