Across the board or a class thing (recalling public school day punishments,) some Freudian throw-back to the days of dear old mum, memories of something that took place "in the rectory," or is it just over-blown in movies for comedic effect?

I don't think it's a Brit thing. I do think we're maybe more open (in spite of the 'reserved' tag we're often given) to new and edgy things. If it's between consenting and informed adults I don't see any problem. I do 'get' it's often treated with disdain or even disgust but I think some might have conflicts insofar as 'what will the neighbours think?'. A) the neighbours don't need to know and B) who cares if they do?

The novel 50 shades of Grey has been a best seller; probably due to the 'taboo' aspect. It doesn't make it a good book (those I know who have read it told me they got barely half way before junking it on the grounds it's very badly written and not an accurate representation), just tapping into curiosity.
