There is a neighbor of mine with a menorah in the window, in a second-floor dormer that looks unused, but the room is decorated with funny old curtains in red velvet with dingleberries and the menorah is white with blue lights with a very bright light shining on it.  I first noticed it last year, and it was there all summer unlit with the room dark, but now it is lit up again, I would say like a Christmas tree but that would be wrong.

I kind of want to bake them some of my mom's sugar cookies -- they use shortening so should be ok, but I'd have to use something other than milk for the icing -- so they know what a good cookie tastes like and not have to eat those sad blue things.  I even have six-pointed star cutters, since many Old World cookies like Zimtsterne have that shape as it didn't become explicitly Jewish until the 19th c. I think, and old pictures from Sweden and Germany have Christmas star-singers under that star.  Here you see it with the Four Evangelists and some saints I don't know in the points.



But it is a cultural minefield!  Would I be appropriating, or otherwise seen as aggressive, or would the whole affair be interpreted as a slight on Jewish baking in general, and perhaps a hate crime?  One hardly knows how to proceed in these difficult times.
