Having completed a ten-year sentence for importing seventy-five tons of marijuana into the United States, Brian O’Dea placed a classified ad headed “Former Marijuana Smuggler” in the Employment Wanted section of a newspaperâ€"a typical act for a resilient and impudent man. Among the advertiser’s references was the U.S. district attorney who was responsible for his arrest in 1990. The O’Dea family is well known in the Canadian province of Newfoundland, where Brian’s father owned the local brewery before going into politics. But the family’s prominence could not protect their middle son. Abused as a child by his local priest, Brian turned to using and selling drugs for the escape and excitement they offered.

By the early 1980s, he was operating a $100 million a year, 120-man business, and had developed a terrifying cocaine addiction. Under increasing threat from the DEA in 1986, he quit the tradeâ€"and the drugsâ€"and began working with recovering addicts in Santa Barbara. Despite his life change, the authorities caught up with him years later and Brian was arrested, tried, and sentenced to ten years at Terminal Island Federal Penitentiary in Los Angeles Harbor.

A born storyteller, Brian O’Dea candidly recounts his incredible experiences in the streets of Bogotá with a false-bottom suitcase lined with cocaine, to the engine compartment of an old DC-6 whose engines were failing over the Pacific, to the cell blocks overcrowded with small-time dealers who had fallen victim to the justice system’s perverse bureaucracy of drug sentencing. Weaving together extracts from his prison diary with the vivid recounting of his outlaw years and the dawning recognition of those things in his life that were worth living for, High tells the remarkable story of a remarkable man in the late-1980s drug business

ps: great show with Aquino. I still am highly suspect of him, and don't as easily dismiss the "satanic panic" abuse stuff as he does, but a very interesting guest.  Not that I am accusing him of being involved, lest "silent weapons" be used against me.

I could see some believing in the abuse for a Satanic purpose (regardless if "true," in the larger sense) but I also could see abusers and/or organizations using "Satanic" ceremonies (or other similar stuff) to scare victims (to get a perverse thrill or to scare a child more), make victim believe that there is a bigger group out there "you tell, we will get your family, your sister, your brother, we are everywhere, you can't escape"), Or child won't be believed because sounds like a horrible movie not something that really could happen.  I also could see a group, or leader using "Satanic" etc motifs and getting underlings to believe, even if they don't. Like a cult leader who doesn't really believe himself but can use member belief for his own uses or to force group dynamics and control (once someone has raped a kid or killed someone or worse) and you have evidence you have someone who, basically, is under control of you or the group until they off-themselves or try to take your position in the group.) Rarely, someone would give themselves up because of the horrible stuff they did and, considering the pageantry and sickness, would authorities believe it? It is hard enough for many victims of "normal" abuse to convince people, even authorities, sometimes.

I'm sure he'll jump into it at some point. Lot's of fun things to cover in terms of the Clinton family.


1. Abuse has never discriminated against religious and non-religious individuals and those in uniform.
2. It can be perceived as Satanic, you don't have to search very far, for an actual purpose or intent of satanic influence. From a psychological perspective, early childhood development would provide further evidence of any irregular imbalances. I don't think i need to provide any examples, as we all remember from our earliest years maybe a character or two that perhaps stood out to you. The kid that was already a fuck up, you knew he was already doomed early on in the game.

There was this one kid in 4th grade who was just a massive douchebag to everyone--it was remarkable even to those of us at that age at the time, although the significance of an 11yo asshole was rather lost on that age bracket.

I found out some six years later, that the kid had been diagnosed at 10 with leukemia, and had since died. This revelation simultaneously explained his behavior, and made me realize that--all people are assholes for a reason.

There ya go, I like to go by the mindset that most people, are naturally good by the default. However there are some cases of where certain things turn south. I can almost certainly feel safe, when I say he was probably abused by a family member or a parent too.
