ANYONE JUST SEE WHAT I SAW

What a clown. He's been in radio for this long and didn't realize you had to pay for music rights?

LET'S not get our panties bunched too tightly!

Let's give Art another chance!

If bumper music is a show stopper then a million other little things could be also.

It's as simple as that.  Really.  This is radio 101.  Extending the benefit of the doubt in a situation like this is...I dunno.  I just find it really hard to believe he's serious about it, or even wants to do it all that much, if THIS is the showstopper.  I'm starting to wonder if he's trying to make some point or other and, if that winds up being the case, it's going to out-Kreskin Kreskin.

He could simply do a damned hour a day and so many of us would still eat it up.

nextgen.fm

He just open each show with sound of a shofar blowing and for bump music just play ocean and forest sounds

What's Art good for, 20 to 30 episodes before some reason comes up to bow out?  Licensing fees are a non issue really.

My mixer:  $200
Custom mic:  $300
DBX 286S mic processor:  $200
Skype number for incoming calls:  $60 per year
Foam padding on all my studio walls:  given to me
Cabling:  $200
Power conditioner:  $250
Computer to run stream, chat, and mumble:  $300

This is pretty much every expense I can think of pertaining to my studio build.  Not even close to $20,000 and I think our audio quality is amazing.

I questioned Art about the $20K on one of his facebook threads and he said he priced what SXM had and it was close... I'm thinking somebody is inflating dollar amounts .. we all know (or at least those of us with AV knowledge) that it could be done - and done quite well with broadcast quality gear for a fraction of $20K.

sydtron

What about traditional phone lines? If he does have 5-6 physical land lines,  how much for that?

pate

I hope he didn't get that number from my comment a couple days ago about my "$20k" outdoor soundsytem (that I sold on ebay to a church somewhere for $6k ten years later).

I imagine it was a bit south of $20k, actually, maybe not, who knows, I'm sure I have the receipts buried somewhere, but here's what I recall having:

I had a 32? channel Peavey portable mixing board (I think I still have the book for that thing, it was sweet)
1 crappy 200W or 400W Peavey amp (monitors, 2 channel used to be my work inhouse sound system amp, was from the 70s I think)
2 1400W canna recall the brand amps (2 channel bridgeable, 1 for mains other bridged for the subs)
2 Peavey "tops" (my mains I think they were some ungodly XYZwatts, hence the gigantic AMPs to run them)
2 Peavey subwoofers (that needed a bridged 1400W amp to run)
3-4 Vocal microphones (I think at least three) w/stands
2-3 instrument/amp mics (the kind you put in front of the guitarist's amp, no line in for guitar) w/ mini stands
4 Shure drum mikes with the clip stands that go on the rims of the drum kit
1 Shure drum kick mic (I'm Not Sure it was designed to be a kick mic, it looked like an old school broadcast microphone, and it was my favorite mic, I think it alone cost $200 or something            ridiculous) w/ stand and gooseneck to stick in the hole that some drummers cut in their kick
Miles of microphone cord w/ extra backups (no idea the number of mic cords, but I think they were mostly 25')
1 100?W Peavey floor monitor (for drummer monitor channel)
3 50?W Peavey floor monitors (for every one else)
Miles of 1/4" patch cables for Amps to speakers, amps to board/snake
1 100' or 50' 32?-channel outdoor 'snake'
1 brand unknown 2 channel Equalizer (had audio bands split up into I can't remember how many MHz-bands, I'll guess 16?)
1 brand unknown 'effects' black-box thingy (hall, room, reverb &et al...)
?? other shit I've forgotten in the past 10-15 years

Yeah, I saw that $20k number and wondered WTF he was buying.

But then I didn't need to broadcast, I think you could easily hear that shit a mile a way, True Story, I'd damn near forgotten those years of "Outdoor Soundsystem For Hire" they were fun!  Would totally waste that $20k (or whatever it was) and do it all over again, I know I lost money, but the memories & story are worth it IMHO...

All that, and I had an ADAT out on the board but never bought one, I figured bands that cared would have their own.  In all those years 1 band did, and they said the mix was better than what they got from a 'professional studio' that they paid big bucks for... I said awesome, send me a copy someday (yep that's all I wanted) but I don't recall that they ever sent it... too bad, too as I recall I enjoyed running sound for their show...

I shall stop writing books that no-one wants to read....

The shows do sound really good. I think a lot of it comes down to design, as well.

Some of that $20k could be in separate processing units. You can do a lot of that digitally, but Art certainly seems to be the old school type if it comes to gear that works. Could be extreme overkill and do tube amps for studio monitors, even though I think Art is a headset kinda guy.

Or maybe they just bought $15k worth of cable from a big box store. So, like, 5 cords.

I know the board, headset and other goo-gaa in his "studio" pics from SiriusXM. It's very standard stuff you find in press row at a major college football game radio broadcast. Onboard comp/limiters, P2P VoIP codec, 4-6 headset I/O, 4-6 AKG headsets and pop balls. For a booth like that, you'd be in the $6500 range installed and tested... for 6 broadcast spots and a very nice board and codecs on each end.

SXM setup in the pic... probably looking at <$3000 installed and tested.

Who has the impression that Art just is looking for a way to charge us suckers for his 'free' program?  Yeah, he needs his music, my butt!  He just wants to make a buck.  It would be reasonable if he was up front about this in the first place, but blaming it on him needing the music is just crazy.  He must think we're awfully stupid.  Are we that dumb?

Kelt

This is exactly the futuristic, space-age set-up I'd expect Art to have.

EDIT: Is that a Fax machine?

So not even $1800, and I would agree the sound is very good. I recall Rollye saying on air the whole reason she started podcasting was to prove someone wrong (I don't recall who at this point some friend of hers) who was spending something absurd like $1500 a month to podcast his own show. She said she spends roughly around the numbers MV is stating and she has been around as long as Art. Now granted she had her telos lines and her broadcasting equipment, but I remember her telling a listener they could do it fairly cheap. She pulls all music from her podcast (well usually, as most things she pays are so old they don't normally care about rights, or the people are dead). So honestly, I don't get any of the cost issues.

And speaking of her, she now owns two of her own radio stations, why doesn't he get hooked up with her for this?

This leaves way more questions than answers at this point.

Chaim

looks like Art could use a better adviser for the technical but also public relations problems, and a better lawyer to protect him from signing crappy contracts.

Gd5150

Doing an Internet radio show doesn't require any broadcast equipment. It's not live. It's not broadcast. You record, edit, post. An iPhone can do it. If you want to do it live, then add a computer for $500
20$ for a mr coffee
5$ for a can of Folders
$2 coffee cup
$25 for smokes

It's practically free these days, that's why everyone has a radio show.

Diabhal

I don't know how anybody could even consider doing a paranormal podcast without awful music like the "Where we started from" song tbh

This is the first I've seen or heard about this. Call yourselves Art Bell fans? You should all be ashamed of yourselves, weather or not Art comes back is not the issue. Over the years he has given us some of the most memorable moments on the radio. I understand you all being upset or angry, but stick with him. Things change, life changes and situations change, get your feet out of your asses and put them in his shoes. Art, thanks for the memories, (huh sounds like a song title); I will always be in your corner. Have faith people, Art will find a way.

How old are you?  YOu sound like the husband who's wife has cheated on him with the third guy and you're telling your buddies that she just has to get it out of her system.

Look, being faithful is very admirable, but you have to choose someone who is worthy of your loyalty.  Otherwise, you just become a patsy and end up having less self respect in life.

Sometimes you just have to grow a pair and put your foot down and say   'I'm worth more than this'.

There are many people in the world who see a good guy and will step all over him.  Learn to judge character.

analog kid

We all know how obsessive Art is about sound quality.

It's a tax write-off. If he wants good equipment out of the deal, I say go for it.

Cut the guy some slack. He's not obligated to do this.

No wonder his back hurts.  That is a cheap, suck-ass chair. It might be slightly comfy, but it is not supportive.  Art, you need to invest in some ergonomic furniture and equipment.  Nothing in that photo is ergonomic.

you are a smart man. yes I admit, I am a raving lunatic.
maybe you're also smart enough to see that MV doesn't want Art+Alex because his main motivation is not to see Art Bell succeed but keep Art entangled in the current situation with a sub-par producer guy and that hobby network for whatever reasons he might have.

How autistic are you?
