Are we still Vaguely lovable?

Art has described us as vaguely lovable or something to that effect.  With all the pounding we've been giving other hosts, I wonder if he still thinks we're at least a little lovable still.  Would be great to hear from him, find out little stuff, has he been back to the Phils lately?  How are all his family and children?  Are things still good between him and Keith?  And does he still love his fans?  Art, say hi for a sec, why don't ya?  Hugs for your family!

DanTSX

My money is on Art thinking we are bunch of winey losers or dickheads.

If that is vaguely anything, it ain't lovable......

WhiteCrow

Didn't Art say we our "vicious but vaguely lovable" as in vicious critics.
Seeing as what we do to Norry and recently did to Jimmy Church, we are pretty vicious, but still lovable to that Bateman guy and Art for the most part.

If Art comes back even for a few Dark Matter shows a month, I hope we can lay off the vicious criticism and realize that these may be his swan song, and enjoy it while it lasts.

laserjock

Well, in our defense:  Noory and Church are kinda mean themselves.

It's not their fault.

It's the booze talking.

laserjock

I pretty much don't drink, maybe a beer once a month, and rarely finish the bottle, so I've never understood alcohol abuse.  Gotta have a clear head to operate lasers, ya know?  (No, haven't been in that line of work for a few years, miss it though!)

I DO suspect that George is a little tipsy at times, and Jimmy seems to advertise that he drinks OTJ with his demeanor.  Art must realize that our complaints with those two, and with Garr and with Wells are justified, they all bring it on themselves with the exception of Garr.  Wells is that spoiled brat that won't shut up during the movie.  Church is that kid that won't share the basketball.  Noory is the klutz that ran into you baby sister on the playground and knocked her out and just sits there whining all while he should get help for the little girl.  They're all school kid types, Garr is that annoying front row girl that answers every question with a bubbly manner, but stabs the other kids in the back when teacher isn't looking.

Art is that smart funny kid from down the street that tells you all the stuff your parents don't want you to know and who clues you in to reality for the first time in your life, but who you've got to handle carefully because if you anger him, your on the kid's shitlist forever.

I wouldn't have gone after Church had he not handled the Sandy Hook story so horribly and had he not shown so much disdain for listeners requesting milder bumper music, instead acting insulting towards us about it.  He's kinda punkish.  And Noory is that ignoramus that deliberately does harm through bad gossip, and sort of knows he's doing harm but he's too arrogant and selfish to change for the good.  His efforts to get parents to stop innoculating their babies infuriates me to no end.  All you've got to do to see what a lack of innoculations does to a child is go live where Art has lived and where my wife is: The Philippines.  People there can't afford the shots and the child mortality rate there is high.  My wife there and I just rescued a new infant from a Shabu addict and we're adopting her, in spite of me being too poor, we're gonna find a way, I'm looking for a better job like I used to have.  And there's the thing, Art might see our bad sides, but most of us Noory critics IRL are decent people, we just don't advertise it.

By and large, I think folks here calls them like they sees them. I hope that's a somewhat (see: vaguely) admirable quality, despite our viciousness. Can't see how that's changed since the statement was made, we've just pissed off more hosts is all.

If you produce a quality show, cut through BS, and take criticism gracefully- it seems you gain favor here. Even a combination of two of those helps.

The fact of the matter is that this is the Internet. People filter and candy coat less. This site will always have complaints about even the best content. That's just how it is. I think Art is intelligent enough to see why we get butthurt. I also think he's trying to make some effort to line up a successor before he rides off into the sunset for good.

Not possible.
Times have changed, nobody starting out today has the luxury of no internet. If someone today came up with a Mel's Hole type story and mentioned a general area then there would be a team of tanless basement dwellers scanning Google Maps within minutes.

Art can never be replaced because most listened for him, something no other host has been able to claim.

As far as lovable - Art has always loved misfits.

Actually, Ian was also good, I really miss the deacon.

Art posts here semi regularly, which is quite cool of him. I mean, if I was a national radio personality and drew the attention of this forum, you couldn't get me to read it Clockwork Orange style.

Did we go to the same school?  I enjoyed your analogy about the school kids.  Sometimes it seems like adults are really just larger, hairier versions of their middle school selves.

At least, no other c2c type host can claim that, but yeah, I agree. Also, as I've said a zillion times, I don't care enough about the genre to hear it discussed by anyone other than art. Just sitting nicely and asking questions of a guest doesn't make you interesting.

Yeah, Ian was the only replacement host I ever cared to hear.

I thought that was implied here.
Otherwise, Ted Tevan and Larry Glick would be obvious additions for everyone, right?

People turning on Art, rightly so, and George calling into the Gabcast to win our hearts and dreams for a good 17 hour period is one of the great moments.

Where is George now? But then again, where is Art? My money is on Art not really caring about us, and why should he? What does he owe us?

Meanandnasty

Mr. Noory, the cool kids want to have a visit.

i always wonder why he does not post here during his NC. for the simple purpose of maintaining his base, not fading from his fans memory, and hyping his show to his core audience. one thing DM showed was that this board clearly represents a fairly large portion of his call-in audience, which is something he will need when he goes to stream and has no lit-up callboards.
other than that, he is more or less worshiped here. probably he was trolled when he posted here before, so does not want to deal with that.

i dont think he is a national radio personality now. i think he is just an old washed up dude. we are prob the last of his fans. i suppose somewhere in time still runs on lots of stations, but i doubt many people listen to that. for the most part, i doubt if many people other than us even remembers who he is.

even if art was a massive, wife-murdering, child-molesting, child-abandoning motherfucker who hated you personally and everyone else and every other horrible horrible thing that he could possibly be, and george noory was genuinely a very nice man who helped starving children and helped little old ladies across the street and came to your house, personally, and sucked your dick when you had a bad day and brought you pizza rolls just to cheer you up, does it really matter?
who would ever want to listen to a george noory radio show over art bell?

Daggit

I was never sure whether the term "vicious but vaguely loveable" was meant to be a compliment or an insult or somewhere in between. I was only a lurker at the time but I held the same sentiments as a lot of the posters at the time. I could never tell whether Art liked BellGab or not.

I don't think 30 days was enough time to tell.

Most people don't call the shows they listen to ever.

DM callers were just Jazmunda, that weird autist from Maine and truckers.   If he gave it time, a caller base would had developed.

Personally, I was cringing at bellgab shout outs after the first week or so.

There weren't that many BellGab callers.  How do you think you develop a base anyway? You need a base like BellGab to build your base.

Art's biggest barriers to entry were doing a show on pay radio, doing virtually no promotion outside of Sirius, not giving it time to organically grow and being out of the business for so long that no-one new who he was anymore.

Wintermute

The best fans are the critical fans. They are the ones that actually listen. They care enough to post / tweet something which on the surface doesn't look like much, but is measurable and takes time to do rather than the fan that does nothing at all.

Fan is short for "Fanatic". If you do anything entertainment related and do not embrace the critics as well as the a$$ kissers, well... you haven't caught on to entertainment. Is it a love/hate thing? Sure. Part of the fun is baiting critics. They give you relevance.

Wintermute

And... at the end of the day, what do I care if Art Bell doesn't like me? Seriously what impact does that have? ZERO. But I like his previous type of entertainment. However rude or critical I may be, in the end I am tuning in aren't I?

i got the impression (gut feeling, nothing more) art didn't particularly like this forum but he knew it was his most concentrated pocket of fans on the internet, so he had to acknowledge it on whatever level.  it will be interesting to see how/if he interacts with bellgab in 2015 as the new show starts (or doesn't).

most of the negativity directed toward art on this forum was the immediate result of his decision to quit.  again.  after ALL of that buildup.  hopefully he doesn't hold that against bellgab because everyone was pissed... pissed at art, pissed at sirius... just pissed.  some were more restrained than others in expressing that anger, but it's not difficult to understand why people were angry and it shouldn't be held against them.

also, this is the internet.  bellgab is not immune to its stupidity.

I think Art understands the internet much better than people his age. However, he seems to be unimpressed with Twitter. He hasn't updated that account since November 2013 and maybe forgot the password at this point.

But if he wants to get some traction when he returns, I expect some old faces will come back to BellGab. Including Art. And maybe even Gnoory.

Well there's your fucking problem.  You have too much blood in your alcohol stream. And to 'finish the bottle' you really need to cup it at the base.

Hope that helps.
