I think the problem is they don't let them fight. Police get called and you get tossed into alternative school. Hence, the kids don't fight and rage gets built up. I'm not saying we need to run teenage fight club, but it needs to be consider rev the effect of all these 0 tolerence rules have.

I get what you're saying.  Increasingly schools are run by women who have politically correct conflict-resolution theories, which sometimes are useful, but not always.  Sometimes if a couple of boys are allowed to duke it out, they will make up later and become friends.  Their bullying problems may be less serious, in the final analysis than those of girls, who always go in for subtle, passive-aggressive or mental or emotional cruelty.

And don't even get me started on today's overprotective parenting styles, cosseting kids in bicycle helmets, etc. Children,e specially boys, need to express themselves with a certain amount of risk-taking, and if they can't do it openly and physically, they will seek out darker, more hidden activities.

It's my understanding that this killer had just returned to school after a suspension for beating the hell out of another guy on the football team.  Kids got suspended for fighting way back in Jurassic 60s and 70s too.  Kids got their hearts broken before Facebook and Twitter. But no one brought Dad's handgun to school to blow the head off a girl for breaking up.  I though having three kids in HS while the net was coming of age was bad enough, but I think we entered very dangerous new territory when kids got free access to social media and to smart phones.

According to today's(Everett) Herald, the girl with whom he had broken up, was not one of the victims, and went to another school. But, yes, there had been a suspension.

Well, our minds up here are still very much on this event.  Ironically, two gun-related initiatives are on the WA ballot this election. Since we have mail voting, many, like me, have already voted.

Jaylen Fryberg is no longer with us.  As often happens in these murder rampages, the rampager took himself out.  People often say "good riddance" in these cases.  It's hard to say that about a young teenager, but I do know that if he had lived, this case would have wended its way painfully through the courts(maybe even tribal courts--I'm not a lawyer) and he might have ended up not doing nearly as much time as a lot of us would consider appropriate.  Perhaps he would have not been deemed mentally fit to try, or not been tried as an adult.

Dave Cullen, author of the book Columbine, had a piece in today's Herald.  He warned us not to put too much stock in the kid's Twitter account.  Whatever.

One Marysville woman, Wendy Morgan, who has a child enrolled in Marysville Pilchuck who happened to have been absent on Fri., had this to say: "It's horrible that this boy had this going on.  Obviously, he was suffering.  He needed help.  There's three sides to every story, I think.  And we don't know his."  I was astounded.  Wonder if she would have been so compassionate if her child had been in school that day and one of the victims.

Finally, there was this piece in the Herald today by Andrew Gobin.  I generally consider it unhelpful (reminiscent of the some of the sappy stuff said and written about Michael Brown and Tryvon Martin, though of course what they did or were accused of doing wasn't nearly as bad), but you can judge for yourself.  hope the link works.  I hate linking from the Herald.

Finally, there was this piece in the Herald today by Andrew Gobin.  I generally consider it unhelpful (reminiscent of the some of the sappy stuff said and written about Michael Brown and Tryvon Martin, though of course what they did or were accused of doing wasn't nearly as bad), but you can judge for yourself. ...

The Gobin piece is mostly as sappy as anything written about about Martin or Brown.  The only part that I thought was relevant was "He was in a long-term relationship with a great girl".  Long-term relationship? At fourteen?? What???  For me, this tended to invalidate all the glowing prose about family, tribal community, team, etc.

Very sad.  What a waste.   The parents of the shooter obviously weren't paying attention to him.   I can't imagine my kids posting that shit on facebook and twitter when they're 14.

Totally has to be guns.  I seem to recall as a youngster getting in various brouhahas at school that I think the nearest teach ignored.  I had access to guns too, so did my classmates, so clearly something to do with that resulted it my still not killing anyone in anger...

Perhaps we should look into this, did the kid killed have bigger, better, more accurate or otherwise 'nicer' weapons other than a fist?  Perhaps more easily concealable?  What if the young shooter saw a tactical advantage on his opponent and chose to 'make the move'

I do wonder sometimes why my pitch to EAsports for their next game didn't involve some sort of South Park Tiger Woods experience...

Apparently, porn spammers were even using the shooting to steer people to their sites, and there was a fake Jaylen Fryberg account.  I wonder if this is what Michael Medved and Rockstar Greg saw on Friday and thought it really came from Fryberg's own account.  Still gunning down your cousins is bad enough.  Having a sleazy Twitter account is kind of irrelevant after that.

What I was driving at is the questionable taste(in my view) of having such a big, public funeral for the shooter.  I doubt if Klebold and Harris got a send-off like this.  In 1988, Laurie Wasserman Dann went on a crime rampage in Winnetka IL, killing one young boy and herself.  Her parents buried her quietly and privately.

On my Twitter feed tonight, I posted some pictures from the Herald of some of the memorial flowers, messages, etc. at M-P that include things like "RIP Jaylen, you are missed" along with memorials to the victims.  My favorite was jack-0-lanterns lined up with each victims name, and one for the shooter  This was in the paper edition of the Herald, but I haven't found it online. Maybe its just me.  Miss Manners doesn'thave anything about murder rampage memorial ettiquette, I don't guess. Its a little reminiscent of young women who were declaring how hot and cute the surviving Tsarnaov brother was after the marathon bombing. Just shut up, already.

Neither Herald or Seattle Times are allowing comments on most online articles about M-P. Today the Herald editor claims that so many comments were nasty they had to disable them.

Well, Hans Dunshee and some other Democrats(as far as I know, all Democrats, but I'm not sure) want $5 million from Olympia to build a new cafeteria.  I have some thoughts on this, and it probably won't win me a lot of friends.

They already got a grant of $50,000 from the fed to pay for employee overtime and MPH shooting-related stuff.  I consider this more legitimate.

The Everett Herald has already disabled comment threads on all of these articles. The times hasn't even covered the story about state money for a new cafeteria as far as I can see. $5 million here and $5 million there and the next thing you know, you're California, that's the way I see it.

Now it turns out that Jaylen's dad was not supposed to have firearms because of a domestic violence rap in 2002. He appeared in Federal Court in Seattle this week.

The Tulalip tribes authorities have no doubt screwed up, and this isn't the first time that they have done so and it ended up costing young lives,.  You have probably heard me talking about a case a few years ago of horrific child neglect. Two baby girls were left strapped in car seats in a car and the reservation for days and one died of starvation, dehydration and exposure.  The mother's phone indicated she had been trying to score heroin during this time. CPS had turned her case over to the Tulalip tribe.

Now Jaylen Fryberg may well have obtained his weapon another way if he wanted to do the crime badly enough. But to me, it helps explain the lavish public funeral service for him which I considered in bad taste.  The dad felt guilty. If Fryberg senior was an unrepentent domestic abuser, it also may explain some things in the family

Mr. Fryberg has been released now, with some fairly stringent conditions. I have a feeling that he won't live up to them.
