Jerky sayings John B. Wells uses to try and sound oh so cool...?

I'd suspect that on his regular setup, he uses a very good broadcast microphone, such as the Electro Voice RE20.  An old broadcaster's trick is to talk across the microphone element, rather than into it.  That emphasizes the lower partials of the voice.  I think, for an old broadcaster, this is more likely than electronic processing.

Well in the JBW thread we find out what the proprr cup of tea is...I hate to say it but I agree with son of Frankenstein. ..and would add. Earl Grey.

I feel like I should have something to contribute here since I'm one of the rare JBW defenders on this forum. I should know him better.

He calls people "Brother" a lot. But I'll take that any day over poor George's weird habit of twisting people's names into nicknames that are longer than the names they actually use. ("Next we've got Mike from Alabama. How you doing, Michael?" "And now it's Steve from Memphis. Stephen, what's going on?")

I gained a lot of respect for JBW one night when one of his guests unexpectedly went off the deep end and started talking about how you can heal people by doing medical work on their shadows. JBW barely missed a beat: "Well I've . . . never heard of anything like that in my life!" You had to be there, but it was funny and awesome as hell. That's when I was like, "Wackos do not ruffle this guy. I like."

I do get weary of the whole mothership thing and telling callers to come on board.

But he lets every other nut job get away with their nonsense?

Yes. It's all a matter of preference, but that's why I like him: I love me some crazy people. And no matter how wacky they get, he lets them talk and stays pretty laid back. I give him props for treating them with respect, at least.

And for his phone-sex voice.

I wanted to call in last night and say, "Heyyyyyy JB, what're you wearing?  ;)"

Or actually, I want Bateman to call in as Maryanne and do it. That's all I want for Christmas, Bateman. Seriously.  8)

Ok ya gotta love the crazys, but sometimes it's funnier if ya mess wit'em a little tiny bit too!

If Batesie does that for you...what you gonna get him?

ItsOver

Hahaha...that's what Well's should be running.  A phone sex line.  1-800-MOM-SHIP.

JBW never says...yes...it's alway s..."gotcha"
And "from the left seat of the mothership"

That's funny, I was wondering how much of that voice is processing.

We need this on youtube....badly.

Edit: John is a lazy interviewer. There have been some guests who had to be so insane because they couldn't keep a coherent thought. He would let them ramble and it was a complete mess and all he can ever say are things like "I am just going to see where you take us." Aaaand of course the guest never took him anywhere. Nor did Wells attempt to describe where the convo went. He probably had to wash dishes, do a load of laundry, etc.

In the matter of public interest I refer all those not hitherto referred to John B. Wells's interview with Sean David Morton.

It put a lot of the pieces of the puzzel together for me.

It's out there. From a couple wks ago. He lost his power and when hs re-routed and came back...he sounded like a different guy. Someone with insider crap should be able to get it and post it for us. I bailed out cause I can't stand the jerk off but I love to hear what if anything he said about it.
Batesy...I once read a bio on jbw, said hs was a big time reporter on WINS 1010 . Must have been after I left nyc cause I don't remember that voice. Could u find something?  Imagine if his "new" voice is a fake !?

Look at the picture jbw uses, I guess it's his "8x10"...boy does he think he is not only cool but a real tough guy too. Kinda guy if you meet on the street and just bitch slap slap across his puss as he proceeds to piss his pants and runs away screaming like a little girl.

No Name Storm

Personally, he looks like Frankenstein's son to me. What a creep. Gives me the shivers....and not in a good way. Ugh!

I like the one about the tea though I wonder what is an improper cup of tea.
Wonder how his tea compares to Japanese tea and the rituals behind it?

Interesting.  Do the  ports down the sides of the EV RE20  enhance/diminish the proximity effect? Does it behave differently with proximity,  than other vocal mics? Say the Shure SM7b?
I've never used the RE20, so IDK how it handles and/or colors differing  vocal styles and techniques when you're in tight to the microphone.

Wow what a trainwreck. The "..." in there are his pauses. This is a vague paraphrase. This all came out of his mouth in like 20 seconds:

"I had a former CIA pilot on C2C awhile back...i looked into his background the best I could...the biggest problem is that we play both sides all the time, and while there are credible people...really good people, there is always a criminal element."

Holy fuck he is crazy

ge30542

The bass is set so deep on his "gizmo", when he speaks from Texas, I wonder if elephants on the Savannahs of Africa feel the vibe in their foot pads and wonder to themselves, WTF is that!

Johnny B. I think just makes up these jerky sayings trying to make it sound like he is a real hip dude...I can't stand the guys show topics so after giving him a few months of a listen I bailed out on him like jorch.

Here's a few of the things he says over, and over that give me "the douche chills" & are very like C2C:
"Go and make yourself a proper cup of tea, we'll be right back."

"Tell us just like taking a shot-gun blast out the back door."

"Just between us and a few million of our very close friends, ha, ha."

"Jambawhambaa."

Ok who's next...?

Ya, hey dair Jocko...yeah I'm lookin' ta see if ya got one of them there tunnels for sale?

LoLLerblades...haha

He plays some good music. Enjoy the Zero 7 and Air songs he plays along with some of the old Trip Hop songs. I guess that's one thing nice to say about Wells otherwise I'm not much of a fan of most of the subject matter he has on his programs.
You had a lot of company.  Reading posts about Wells here, I was always surprised at how few seconds of bumper music bracketing the breaks provided cover for almost an hour of Toxic John's drek.

Huw Janus

I do not miss this guy.  The faux-Brit routine (complete with the tea) was so tiring.

Jackstar

He lived in the UK for like a decade. How is that "faux"? So tedious.

Sure, go ahead and rag on him for being an Anglophile. At least that would be accurate. Inane, but accurate.

Yep...u r correct.
One nite a couple three wks ago...he had some tech difficulties.  Lost the call and said he had to go off the prem rat fed thru the studio and go thru his isdn computer hook up. Got his guest back on air and the guest sounded the same...but wellsey boy sounded totally flat and all of a sudden had a regular voice! No booming bass!? He must pump it thru some gizzmo to try and sound like the voice of God...what a frigging phony!

Maybe he had a sore throat from recording those classic rock band at state fair commercials.  I swear it is him.  "SUNDAY. SUNDAY. SUNDAY. At the Lake County State Fair, LIVE FROM CANADA.  LOVERBOY."  I think people on lithium respond to the frequency John speaks on.  From coma to awakening, this is John B. Wells. Cut yourself a couple of proper lines, and I will see you shortly.

John uses an re27... The sm7b is a great mic that delivers a smooth sound. The re20 delievers the bigger sound than any of the mics mentioned and all have a specific sonic signature. Keep in mind preamps also play a significant role. I prefer the re20 over everything i use. John will be joining me saturday night live. Endofdaysradio.com
