Art Bell Quits Dark Matter

Started by DesertFox, November 01, 2013, 07:13:24 AM

Maybe this was all done because Art had a beef with Premiere and over time he realized his heart was not really in it. If that's the reason I'd expect him to at least address that, he could have kept some dignity if he only gave the audience some closure.

I'm going to wait about a week to see what's going to happen. If the worst is true then it's tough to feel anything but soured on what he has done.

I can't believe this crap.

First my bank branch is closing after 70 years and then they told me and my gf that they're going to eliminate tellers and all banking is going to be through an ATM with a teller on tv, a mugger's dream. Bank of America.

Then we go into Barnes and Noble, our hangout since Border's closed and found out that they're closing on 12/31 because some linen store bought out their lease for $ 400k more than they were willing to pay. One linen store in that area just went out of business, there's a Target and a Marshall's in the same shopping center and a Bed Bath Beyond 2 miles away so a linen store isn't needed.

Now this and they just took out the money for the month.

I signed up to listen to Dark Matter and not get the Dark Dildo shoved up my ass.

IF Art's quitting because he didn't get his way there's no reason to ever trust the man again, is there ? He wanted things his way and the only guy who ever did it his way was Sinatra.

I guess I can call Sirius in the morning and cancel. I can buy a lot of Sinatra for $ 14.95 a month.

I have listened to Art Bell since I was 13, and now I am going though some tough times, his voice gives me comfort and nostalgia of a time when life was better. I really want his show to continue!

Also, have been slowly making my way through the thread. Just wanted to say Seraphim, best to your family and I hope the best for your Dad's recovery.

I understand. Art's show played a key role at one junction point in my life, so I feel strong attachment to him.

However, this is the last straw for me. If he truly has jumped ship I will try to remember him as he was and not for what he became.

callin it an early night. good night folks enjoy snoory's show on Voting (lol).

Everyone try not  to blow a gasket. Relax, we will go back to pranking good old george tomorrow.

This forum will continue not because of art bell, but the connections made between posters.

Long live bellgab or coastgab or noorysucksgab or whatever the fuck we are calling it now.

What a night.  Art quits again and Dave's doing a shit show on, of all things, voting.  You can't make this crap up.

I just started the petition and already recieved 21 signatures. That was so fast!! ^^

Quitting repeatedly for his back or whatever was one thing.
But building up his new show and getting his former listener base all hyped up for his new show and then after a short time he does something like this.
Nope.
Fool me once ... fool me twice, shame on you, Art.
I can never trust the man again, can you ?

Even so, can you find it in your heart to sign? I know you are super mad about it. >.< Art has just started and it can continue to grow even greater!

Spinner

I know that many here are hurt and/or angry. After the initial shock, I too was angry and hurt. But despite those feelings, I know that I would like to continue listening to Art on Dark Matter. But it appears that the only way that could happen, is that both Art and Sirius continue to discuss the matter.

It just may be that one year of free streaming is just too long for Sirius. So maybe a shorter period would have a chance of being accepted. Six months? Four months? The point is, there must be a way that they can compromise.

I will email Art and Sirius executives asking that they please reconsider and find a way to compromise. And I hope that many of you will also take this sort of action.

I still haven't researched who to email at Sirius, so if anyone knows, please post.

To be clear...Dark Matter kicked ass, thats why we are all pissed off. We paid, it delivered. Art bailed on something great.

Art didn't bail on something great.  Art IS Dark Matter.  Without him it's nothing.   He'll be back, and all you assholes who rail against the man who has entertained you for the last 20+ years will come crawling back because he is the fucking best thing to ever happen to radio.   You're pissed now, but a couple months from now you'll be wishing Art was back.  Art does this shit for YOU.   He is not in it for the money.   He wants to deliver the best product.  Listen to the fucking show - he cares about how it sounds.  Why?  Because he knows the show won't be the best unless it is the best.

Yes it sucks to be without him for a bit, but he loves this way too much not to come back.

As far as the non compete is concerned, IF it's true he signed a 2 year, it's very possible that it's written such that he can do whatever the fuck he wants anyway.   It might just be for satellite based transmissions.  Who knows.   We don't know any behind the scenes information.   This all could be over something completely different and Art is just spinning it this way because that's how he needs to spin.

Agreed. I began listening to Art at the same age (13) and his shows have been a massive part of my life. Maybe that's why I am so angry. Having Art back doing live shows was such a breath of fresh air, and him quitting so quickly is a real kick to the gut

TumbleWeed

I expected dave to be doing a song and dance number about how much better than art he thinks he is.

The most egregious thing is the number of people that went "all-in" on buying the equipment and subscriptions to this service to get only a month and a half of content, for a show the man himself said was run the way he chose.

It's a slap in the face to the audience, whether he intended it or not. Go without open lines for the next three years and build your audience until your contract expires and leave with dignity. Many successful and entertaining shows go without open lines at all. Find a way around it, if the show really is progressive and about the future (as he talked about the show on the first episode) then move on from what you're familiar with and start up something brand new.

Disappointing.

Quick Karl

The pay-to-listen satellite thing, aint makin it...

2 years.
Hell, we all could get whacked by a bus, or a brainy asteroid or Niburu in 2 years.
I got a lot of books I can read, laundry to do and cleaning.
Now I'm glad I didn't buy a car radio.
Hope Art enjoys his trip back to relative obscurity.
Again.

I'm really foolish, because I do trust him. He's very frusterated that he can't get supply his show to his fans from all over the world like he can, and streaming it online can help. I'm just a loyal fan doing what I can to sooth my bleeding heart.

You hit it on the head. I realized a while ago that this has been about nostalgia as much as anything for me. We all lost something a decade ago. Don't know what it was. Maybe some kind of naive hope in the future. Maybe it was because we were all younger then and still hadn't gotten our asses kicked by life quite as much. But I had hoped that Art's return might have signalled a sea change of some kind. Like we made it through the tunnel and there's a light up ahead. Well, I guess there really is no Santa.

Sweety, we all feel the same way,  Art also takes me back to a time in my youth where things were soo magical. On top of that Art WAS a good radio talk show host. But unfortunately Art's true color's  have shown, and it looks like Artie wasnt the man that we all thought. Paranormal talk radio definitely needs a new host that is on par with Art Bell or better, but for now there is no one. I suppose you can listen to Art's old shows, but for most of us, it is not the same after what he pulled this time around. Ill never bother listening to Art again after this BS stunt that he pulled.   :'(

I count my subscription to Sirius XM as my signature.

If that's not good enough to bring him back then I refuse to do any more. I voted for him with my dollars.

Wait and see if he is back this week. If not, DM was a throwback to the 90s and I'll miss chatting while it's live on here.

Exactly.  He hasn't  officially quit as far as I have read, right?  They're still playing replays.  I would not be surprised if this is not over.

WOTR

I have only read a few dozen pages... but it seems that I may be the only one who is just shrugging for now.  I am disappointed if DM really has ended.  Having said that, Art still does not owe me anything.  He does not need to return for me and I still wish him the best and hope he finds happiness.

Overall, I am still going to hope that somehow this gets resolved or that Arts agreement would not stop him from broadcasting a whole new show if he so chose.  He put a lot of work and effort into this (rounding up Ross Mitchell, the bumper music, the guests, the website and so on.)  If he is ending it, he is hurting himself much more than his fans.  To spend the time and energy that he has for 6 weeks is a lot worse than being upset that there were only 6 weeks of shows broadcast.

(I cannot believe that I am saying this...) I am happy that we had another 6 weeks that brought me to a different time and managed to put a smile on my face almost nightly.  I am hoping for more, but may have to be satisfied with what I got.  The other advantage is that it really did cure me of Noory.  I still will not be tuning into Dave aside from the occasional few minutes here and there.  It was a good way to wrap up Coast and put it to bed for me.

Desmond

Listening to C2C while netsurfing...  the bumper music coming out of the bottom of the hour break was Roy Orbison's "It's Over".   Had to be directed at Art and his fans... had to be.

Thank you! Yes, the best thing about his show is that it plays just like his old shows. It gives me sucn a nice feeling!

Me, too.
Money talks and bullshit walks.
I can also get some old Long John Nebel shows and listen to them.
And I was hoping Art would be a $noory killer.
So much for that idea.
$noory must be doing a jig tonight.

I really hope you're right. I'd still listen to the show if he comes back on XM and look forward to chatting with everyone on here about it.

But this stunt (if that's all it is) changes a lot for me as a listener.

Hey if you have links to any Long John Nebel torrents please pm me. I've only heard two shows and I was really impressed.

Where did you find the Long John Nebel shows?  I've been wanting to find some but there doesn't seem to be a lot around, or I'm looking in the wrong place.

At the last break, George played "It's Over" by Roy Orbison. :(

What?! Where were you when this happened in 1998? 2000?? 2002?!! 2007??? All he's fucking DONE is abandon his audience. This is par for the fucking course and has nothing to do with his skills as a radio host. I'm pissed off that it happened too but if anything, what he's done tonight is a great showing of consistency, not any sort of revelation of true colors. If you're going to talk shit you ought to know what you're talking about first.
