Being a huge AB fan for years, I ran out and purchased a radio and car kit for our big rig (yes, I am one of those much-maligned trucker types). I have to admit I was pretty unhappy when this new debacle began. Unhappy with Art, unhappy with Sirius, blah, blah, blah. While I'm still not thrilled with the situation or being out over a hundred bucks for hardware that's pretty much worthless to me after six weeks, when it comes down to it I'm STILL a huge fan and - foolishly or not - would pay that hundred-and-something all over again if Art announced tomorrow that he was taking his talent to some other platform that required it.  He's irreplaceable in his genre and this whole thing is a damned shame for everyone.

Now, speaking of shame...hey, that refreshing, ice cold beer you're enjoying?  You're able to because of a trucker. More than likely, same goes for whatever you had for dinner.  Oh, and next time you're on the crapper, think of me when you have the luxury of wiping your ass with toilet paper.      As I write, I'm laying in my sleeper, looking out at a gorgeous night sky, free and wondering where the road will take me tomorrow. AWESOME.  That stuffy office I left to do this?  You can have it.

I think a lot of us are in that same mind set. At first I washed my hands and thought that was the final straw... but it wasn't... fuck.

I do skim a lot of posts, but I didn't see any trucker hate.

Hey thanks for this link, I scanned but really need to read it all.  From what I scanned, I vaguely remember GN as an occasional host which means I hated him immediately.

I listened to Art for years elated to have found the show one night while playing around with the coolest little radio I had at the time.  I'd go to bed with this cool, wind up or battery or plug in radio that had its little flashlight, from RadioShack, 40.00, every night, rolling the dial back-and-forth picking up broadcasts all over the world, half of the time I'd fall to sleep to someone speaking Chinese and then,    ONE     NIGHT,    I picked up Coast to Coast with Art Bell and my life changed in an instant!  He was my go to man between break ups, for times of insomnia for so many things and I was spellbound by him.  I must have told a thousand people about him over the years and maybe 5% knew who he was.  And of those only half listened.

Very painfully and sadly all I remember at the very end was that he had really left for good and they turned it over to this GN person who I didn't listen to when he would host so tuning in for him as Art's replacement forever more technically was in instant turnoff for me.  I just hated him.  I hated his voice.  I hated his Michigan accent.  I hated what a complete idiot he was.  I hated everything about him and with the loss of Art, it felt like I had had a death in my family.

It is wild to have Art back and we are so lucky because you can bet this next retirement will be the final one and a whole lot of us will have to lose him at that intense level again.  I can't wait till he figures out how he's going to do his show.  I'm so excited, lol, again.

I remember blaming Art for years for turning it over to this horrible host and I know it sounds ridiculous but I was mortified.  I hurt for years and just stopped listening all together.  And I blamed him entirely, but all he did was finally choose to retire.  He didn't pick anybody from what I glanced at from Textor.

Lol.  I listened to that one, there were some genuinely creepy moments and some moments where my bullshit meter went off the charts.  He's such a mess, it's hard to take him seriously when he talks about having cancer and how he cleaned up his diet drastically, and then you see him with chinese take out, and jugs of soda.  Of course you're having a panic attack, you just ate the shittiest meal in the world.

Speaking of Art (well his vocal doppelgänger), I'd never heard of Phil Hendrie, or his Art spoofs until you guys brought him up in this thread a couple of days ago. I've been mining the net for as many clips of Hendrie doing his Art as I could find. Damn, that is some of the funniest stuff I've ever heard!  I mean it's uncanny how much it sounds like Art. He's got a genius ear not only for Art's vocal mannerisms, but also for, in a playful way, subtly including Art's peccadillos in the comic timing.

Check out these MP3's I dug up. I've been listening over and over to the second "Art Bell Resignation.mp3." It's f'ing brilliant (and apt to events of the last week). Hats off to Hendrie.

I wish Clyde Lewis could tame his inner Alex Jones, he's quite capable of putting on a great esoteric show, far more capable than Noory or Wells.  I think he does 5 hours a day?  He's a physical mess, multiple surgeries, cancer, obese, but he cranks them out.  It's admirable.

I agree with you:  if Clyde could tone down those rants he tends to go on, too often, he could easily become THE host of late-night following-the-creepy radio.  But he probably isn't interested in being a Top Radio Talk Show Host star, or I think he WOULD tone down the rants:  I'm sure many people have told him they're off-putting.  But when you hear him on with a guest, or taking calls, pre-rant(s), he's one of the best minds and voices on late night radio.  I love that he even does some of his own ghost investigating, too.

Yes, he is "heavy" and he just had some rather serious cancer surgery, from which he was back on the air in just a few weeks.  His show airs live 5 nights a week, 7pm to midnight, out of his home station, KXL in Portland.  I usually stream it through Tunein.com.  Btw, that is one of the few places you will hear all five hours:  his show is syndicated on various stations throughout the country, where he airs in the timeslot prior to c2c usually, but the stations tend to play only 1-3 hours of his show, depending on the station.

I started listening after I found I couldn't even stomach John B Wells anymore.  Clyde impressed me, there were a few shows that were absolute gems, probably the closest stuff to classic Coast outside of Knapp's missing 411 shows.   The rants are really grating, especially when he says NO YOU'RE WRONG a thousand times.  I lay in bed with headphones on wondering what the long term effects of piping arguments directly into your brain at 4am.  The bizarre horror movie esque cuts of audio he leads in and out of breaks with can be really grating too, obnoxious even.

I really admire his work ethic, I couldn't do what he does.  Art couldn't.  I hate to hear how deluded he can get, clearly he's still feeding his very weakened body dogshit.  When people approach him about that, he turns them off instantly.  There's no getting him to listen.  He eats well!  Then he talks about getting burgers, drinking sodas, and all the other terrible shit he should be staying clear off.  So frustrating, especially when you consider he could be really great.  I hope he gets his shit together.

The first couple of shows I heard I thought "yeah maybe ". Super Bowl week turned me off completely to him. The redundancy of his bitch for 5 hours is unbearable.
We call him Chicken Little at work because it sounds like, to him, the sky is ALWAYS falling! And God help you if you disagree with him.
The final straw for me was him crying like a bitch at the search for the Zodiac killer.  Then out of the blue the voice recorder says his name clear as day.  RIGHT!

I'm going to try to see if I can find it cheaper.
I only have so much to spend at one time.
Once our car is paid off, I can afford to indulge my video efforts more than I can now.
I did find memory cards for my handicam at Radio Shack a lot cheaper than at Best Buy and they have car chargers there too which Best Buy doesn't carry.
A tripod for the camera next month.
