OH MY GOD!!! <(you can substitute whatever deity you wish, or none of the above) YOU ARE NOT ONE OF 'THEM' ARE YOU!?!
*preparing fight or flight response, well actually fright AND flight, as I am not a fighter*

I have 'Them' written in indelible ink on the very mirror that when I look in it, has a reflection not disimilar to my face...Spookily so, although the left/right elevations are transposed.

Repeats guttural laugh and accidentally coughs and splutters akin to a half drowned non swimmer, flaying around.

Maybe 'they' (on the other side of the mirror) wrote it (in reverse, naturally) to try and brain-wash you into thinking you are one of 'them'?
Maybe you are really one of 'us' and 'they' are trying to trick you?

The reflection you see in the mirror is a view of yourself a very short amount of time in the past. Since the speed of light is finite, it takes some amount of time for a light ray to scatter off of you, reflect from the mirror and enter your pupil. So you only ever get a view of yourself in the past - keep in mind that the speed of light is so large that a light ray could travel a distance equal to circumnavigating the Earth something like 7 times per second - but this means that mirror "you" is not the "you" that exists in the present. In some sense a mirror only gives a view of the past.

Also as a separate issue I think the time needed for a complete replacement of every cell in your body is something like four months if I'm not mistaken. Physically, you are not made of the same stuff you were just four months ago. It's the arrangement of the building blocks that make you up that's important, not the specific blocks themselves.

Trippy.

I'm 40 and I've done a lot of thinking on these kinds of topics and also read, within my educational level, quite a bit of literature involving differing opinions of same.  Ziznak's comment hits the nail on the head as far as the physical aspect of "Am I still me?" question, IMO.  Arguably, we aren't.  Not only that, we may be headed for changes as we age, further distancing us from the us we believe ourselves to be, for instance.

Somewhat related, it's been my own opinion for the better part of a decade now that even consciousness, self-awareness, was all a trick, anyway.  A sort of necessary self deception.  If you haven't read this article on the subject of necessary self-deception, it's Damned Interesting.

The article you linked is interesting. It asks the question how do we tell someone that it will be alright if their life does really suck?
to be honest in a clinical situation therapists with any skill and/or training would never suggest everything will be ok. Not to get too complicated but therapy is about teaching people more appropriate coping skills and more of a realistic appraisal of what works in a person's life.

Psychiatric diagnoses are often misunderstood by those diagnosed, their families, and unfortunately by many health care professionals.

simply put life is a game. We all have to play the game. People with a mental illness still have to play but a diagnoses is supposed to give them some idea of where they are on the "field". Knowing where they are and using effective skills can help them to be successful at the game.
