LOL -
First IT job I got was at a paper mill in the early 90's.  They were still using these for data entry and to run the nightly batch jobs.  I couldn't believe it.

I spent more than my share of time working with these. I used to be able to read them just by looking at the punches.

When I was in the Air Force, I would get 12-15 boxes of the cards a month that were punched, but not printed. The first thing I would have to do is stand at an interpreter running them through to get the printing placed on the top.

I guess they figured shipping classified punched cards was more secure if the printing was not included.

One thing I always wondered... Classified information has to have the classification on each page. None of the punched cards I ever handled ever had classification markings on them. The box would be labeled, but the cards themselves were not. You would think they would have at least used a different color.

They were coming from Hilary's' private keypunch machine

They are still used in certain government offices as a backup in case a nuclear strike produces an em pulse that knocks out the regular computers...

Hey bobo, is this you ?

There was another crank on here that loved to quote their own posts too.

i'll be damned. Genesis P-Orridge made it into the thread. My absolute favorite person on earth. Commenting for no other reason to say, "Aww, I love Gen so much.".

Back in the day ... my punch-card story.. I was a manager of a hardware wholesaler catalog/advertising department.  Wanted the IBM 360 programmers to "make" a program to change the manual alphabetic  index for the catalog to a computer one. So when adding/deleting items to the catalog, wouldn't have to make all new "type-set" lay-up sheets for printing the index. Just use the reports from a computer and print them as the alphabetic catalog index.

No personality, computer wizard manager told me, "here kid, fill out this work order, be a few months"

Yeah right, I thought.. work order- two months LOL..  So instead, during lunch at local bar/sandwich hang-out,  chatted up the key punch 'women" operators.  Talked them into taking the old printed alphabetical index from the catalog and making a punch card for each items' line item.. with same spacing between item and page number.

The next day, my "girls" gave me a box of punch cards all in alphabetical order.

Day later, after work, over beers.. with the computer printer guy, asked if he could print the box of punched IBM cards onto a report. with each card on separate line. "No problem" he replied.

Had my new  "computerize" report (alphabetical catalog index) on the third day.

To add new items to the catalog index,  had the key punch operators make a new card and manually place the new card in alphabetical order, in the box of punched card. And discard deleted items from box.

If memory serves me.  it took like 6 months the before the computer wizard had the program "made" to run the catalog index on the IBM 360 mainframe.

Contrast.. decades later.. now I'm the Boss.. I have to make sure the IT guys, don't fall all-over themselves, trying to please me when I talk to them about an idea and "I" cause an upset with the "normal daily" work flow.

Never learned how to program, kind 'of regretted  that  :(

Love ALL ...   and beers help too.

See, there you go screwing it up again. He only shows up to post here if he sees his name hasn't been mentioned for 48 hours. That drives him mad. Then he pops in to scold a troll or two,  posts a witty post for old times sake and then leaves, with or without a threat of never coming back, all based on his biorhythms. Now the clock starts over.

Haha. You're undoubtedly correct on that GravitySucks. I've seen that pattern on here too.

I will restore order in the thread by mentioning my choice for most addictive potato chip, the Miss Vickie's Jalapeño. No bag is large enough to satisfy.

All
this is my last post
good bye
bobo

Wow is all i can say.
I never imagined the outpouring of well wishes and pleading for me to return.
Given that, i have decided to ignore the trolls and will be rescheduling my meeting
with Art, keith, Heather and myself.

I have given Art the O.K. to acknowlegde me publicly on this board.
I am not a joke, I am not somone to be mocked. I am important.

Although my relationship goes back many many years, i will not allow the "trolls" to
deter me and my fellow bell gabers from getting this radio show back on the rails.

thanks again, it is TRULY overwhelming.

Is that a punchcard?!  ???

Yes. In older versions of SAS (pre 2003), you had to type "cards;" at the very start of your document to initialize it.
The cards; command told it to read whatever you were typing next as a program.

I don't mind those too much. They are certainly edible, but I always get a tinge of some type of aftertaste that doesn't sit well with me. It might be the mix of oils they use or some additive they include. My favorites are still these. Only problem is each bag is a single serving.

Dearest bobo17,

After careful consideration, your application requesting respect and admiration has been tentatively disapproved. Please resubmit in thirty days for final disapproval.

During that thirty day period, please keep you hands, feet and mouth to yourself. You may reimburse and and all forum members for their chip and dip purchases, since it was your lurid temptations that destroyed all of this New Year's resolutions.

Now, back to sitting at the feet of Trudeau. Take off, eh.

No reply required, it will only be ignored.

Agreed.  And we all know a drunk uncle that says what's "on their mind at any given moment", but that doesn't qualify one for POTUS.  And people are already fighting in the comments after his post!  This entire presidential campaign is like immature children arguing on the playground. I'm done with MITD w/HW too. :(
