Art Bell

From arts Facebook post seems like he wanted to continue but his Wife told him no way.

Well it's hard to show any sense of normality but Ill give it a shot for anyone who cares....

Time for the Saturday post.

Tonight starting at 8PM Central until Midnight Central ( Thats 6 to 10pm Pacific for you guys in Rio Linda ) on http://ksyl.com is: Art Bell: Somewhere in Time. Where Art returns to 6/19/96 when biographer Roger Morris discussed the hidden history of Bill and Hillary Clinton.

http://ksyl.com has a live stream listed on their page and they can also be found on Tune-in.
If you are local to NW Louisiana or if the propagation is right, you can hear them on 970AM,
I do not know if the show is in the archive. Jazmunda might have the info on that. However from past info, these may be the "new" classics and may not be in the archive.

For those of you with a bent for nostalgia, from 6pm to 8pm Central, ksyl plays When Radio Was, with old radio shows from the time when "Radio was King!"

Remember "Theres Magic in the Static"
"When you go outside tonight, look to the sky, you never know what you may see"

Couple things, to those that glad hand RCH, fuck you. He told a certain person that he owned them. That's right and at the same time was not paying them. Fuck RCH.

The other thing, I don't wish torment or turmoil on anyone not deserving. Art Bell is not deserving of any kind depraved terror inducing incidents. To those that want to arm chair the validity of Art's claim. Do any of you have a real life? Let's for the moment consider it is all a fabrication. So what? He is stepping down. We, individually can wet our pants and cry or we can realize it is a radio show.

Can't listen to vanilla coast or ground vanilla.  Can't do it.  I am listening to 1994-11-10 open lines from the mega-torrent right now.

I remember from about 2010, we had a big name talk host in Miami, Neil Rogers (neilrogers.org/), and he was having issues with his show, as the cheapo station (560-WQAM) was trying to make him quit, to get out of paying him his big check per his contract.

Anyway, they fired his very long time producer, and gave him some noob producer afterwards, but he would not quit.  One day he said the F word on the air, and it went out over the air (because his dump button was not functioning in the new studio they were in).  After that show, they pulled him off the air and negotiated a settlement and his show was done.

About 6 months later he got sick and died.  So I hope Art is around a long time and stays healthy for a part-time return at some point.

Probably going to download as many MITD shows as possible and stick them into the archive on my hard drive.  Then cash out ASAP.

I have to catch a plane. Someone should go check and see what the Princeton Eggs did yesterday. There was a disturbance in the force.

My wife doesn't boss me around.

But when I need an "out" from something I don't want to do, or attend, it's not u heard of for me to play the ol'. ".....hey I'd love to go but my old lady has been nagging me to spend time with her / do xyz project / some other thing, so I can't make it.  Sorry guys catch you next time...."

It's quicki, and it works because most guys are bossed around by their bossy, short-haired wives anyways. ;)

Art doesn't owe anybody anything. At worst, he has come back and done a lot of shows that we would not previously have had. He could have said, 'sorry, 5 months is enough' and walked away, and I wouldn't have criticised him for it. The main reason I have misgivings is the number of false steps he has made over the last months, both prior to and during the new show, and it all adds up to a feeling that this was one gig too far and he should have stayed retired. That happens in many walks of life: people just go on a bit too long, although their fans are reluctant to admit it.

The build-up to the show was fraught with all sorts of issues, ranging from the bumper music to the fight with Keith. He also didn't seem to have any idea of the new media landscape and thought that we could simply get the word out and it would all fall into place like magic. I don't think the website was ever geared to a long-term tenure either: it was very basic and had little functionality. He really needed someone else to come in and improve it, but we all know that he was virtually wedded to Keith and wouldn't have considered anyone else. This all created a homespun air to the enterprise that made it feel very short-term to me.

The show itself was also quite disappointing. Few of the guests challenged the great shows of the past, for example, and it felt too often like someone trying to recapture old glories and not quite getting there. It was all very competent but the magic was lost. It was also too short: the show was unbalanced at three hours and you missed the old first hour where he would discuss the news. The callers were also very poor. That is not his fault, of course, but his obsession with audio meant that he seemed to privilege those with decent call quality over anyone else. The fact that scratchy call quality actually helps the kind of show he does was lost on him. I felt that he had been too long out of the game and had forgotten what made him great in the first place.

Finally, he made some very odd decisions over the last months. That business of the 'announcement' was a case in point. It was a minor bit of housekeeping that could have been taken care of in a few seconds, yet he saw fit to tease his subscribers  for several days over a detail that affected nobody. It was as pointless as it was bizarre. I don't know the details behind that harassing of RCH a few weeks ago. It was hinted at that Art was behind it. If so, that's disgraceful. RCH might be a dick, but that kind of passive aggressive stuff shows Art in a very bad light, if true. How on earth he could have countenanced Leo Ashcraft as his newsreader is truly mind-blowing. To stomach that idiot's bumbling for several months still makes me shake my head, and it felt like Art did not care all that much, and that he was a perfectionist no longer. His drafting in of Heather is another example: I am sure she is a fine person, but she has no track record and it is unfair on her to expect anything but mediocrity. Even an experienced pro would struggle to follow Art.

The fact is, he doesn't really enjoy doing the show on a regular basis, and hasn't since he 'retired' the first time. Every so often he gets twitchy and wants to come out and do it again, then he gets bored once more and goes away. Would Art really have said 'fuck it, I'm off!' twenty years ago when he was building the show? No. Why doesn't he say the show is on temporary hiatus while things get sorted out? After all, if the stalker is apprehended tomorrow, that means he can come back on Monday, right? I don't think so. This business of doing a few shows here and there is what suggests to me that he really had grown bored of it and wanted out, but liked to have the option to come back every so often.

I don't think people are really entitled to feel 'let down' by Art, because we all know what he is like, or should do. I will always be a big fan of his earlier stuff, but it's hard to keep that going over a long period and it eventually catches up with you, as it did with Stern and Phil Hendrie. I think it is possible to be critical of Art while having respect for him. In this instance, he just went on a bit too long; but thanks, Art, for coming back and having another go.

It's better just to believe what art bell tells you if you want to buy into his world that deeply.  You never want to truly know your heroes.    I like the art bell that art chooses to present to us, and am glad he gave us another 5 months.   If he is done, whatever, have a nice retirement.  If he wants to come back for another few months and pull his schtick again, I'll welcome hat too, but I won't get all emotional about it when he packs it up again.

Exactly so; He's had fawning rained down on him that has frankly been embarrassing. I'm old enough to remember Donny Osmond coming to the UK, the Beatles before him, and several since..In those cases it's usually pubescent schoolgirls putting the real face to the poster on the wall. Someone said they'd dealt with the Beatles, and (shock!) they were human and probably normal. Humans have failings, and foibles and that includes those who may be well known. Art Bell isn't that well know outside his niche fan base. That might not be popular to contemplate but it's true. I'm willing to bet that more people in the UK have heard of Terry Wogan or Tony Blackburn in the UK, than have Art Bell, John Wells  and George Noory in the USA. TW and TB are both in their 70's, both are radio broadcasters of very long standing. Neither of them are anything but human and I'm sure both would be cringing if they had the adulation thrown at them that AB does.

This one thousand times.

The shows started out very good and fizzled slowly the last few weeks to the point that I often never bothered to finish listening to them.

Guaranteed that Bell will TEASE us with a return after he gets serial quitters remorse.

His ego needs stroking and when he stops getting the attention the idea of coming back will appeal greatly to him. By then he will be telling us that he's 80 a thousand times a show and I will have truly and forever given up on listening.

If nothing else, the silver lining is that he's gone too.

I 100% disagree. Many shows were excellent, many not so good. Many of the old shows were crap. The quality was there and the quality of the callers was coming back.

Plenty of posts about Art not owing the listeners anything.  True enough.  I wonder if the opposite is also true, whether his listeners owe him anything?  The benefit of the doubt about all this?

I don't understand the skepticism either, PB.

I get it that fans want to continue enjoying MITD. I get it that fans feel a connection and even some form of devotion. What I don't get is, how there is any substantive way to intervene for Art.

Let's assume for a moment that the events are overblown or even made up. What kind of vindication would one be looking for? What would change? Grasping for some form of evidence to deny that Art is quitting seems like a fool's errand.

Art may not do another show, ever. He may do some without any regularity.

What I do know is, if anyone thinks gathering all the information is somehow going to change Art's position, well, probably not.

It is probably deeper than this.  Some people might feel used or deceived by someone they love.  The "active midnight shooter" scenario seems to have some grand canyon sized holes in it.  Right or wrong, some people might feel a loss of trust in a great radio personality.  We'll get over it.

Since we pay the subscriptions and he broadcast every detail to a global audience he has kind of made it our business to be fair. Now I don't consider Art a hero of mine but I was disappointed by his decision. He loves doing the show so much but decides to lay down and take it in the ass instead, while doing the same to his subscribers by proxy.

They both knew what he was like. With his track record, this was always on the cards. He has never been reliable and they ought to have been aware of the risks.

So this isn't just another weekend drama thing that will be resolved Monday when Art is back. I'm an incorrigible optimist and still hoping we hear Art again soon. Heather did great and given the chance will get better but there is Art Bell then there is everyone else

Art has made the nights brighter. And I have enjoyed this community as much as the shows. *sigh* Back to U7, YouTube and archives

Thanks Art. I certainly enjoyed the ride. Wish it could have gone on. And I'll continue to hope we hear you again soon
