Excellent job, SR!!!! You set the perfect tone to remind old listeners and introduce new listeners to the best late night host ever, Art Bell. This is what I've been missing for so long. Great to finally have a choice.

i once had a drag queen as a roommate.  gay as they came.  also lived on the same block as a gay man once.  and i'm an elton john fan.  even so, the podcast did not offend me.

Then you are aware that the suicide rate for gay teens is horribly high, and that using the term in a denigrating manner, just as saying the word Ni**er causes hurt.  You aren't gay, so you don't understand.  Do you have any idea how hard it was for my son to come out?  When I finally encouraged him to not be ashamed but instead be proud, because I was VERY proud of him, he bawled on the phone for hours after we talked and he came out.  He was terrified that his straight parents would accept him, in spite of us being liberal and VERY caring.  You had a roomate.  Ok, so?  I dated black women, had a GF even, but I'm not black.  I know how hard it is to SOME extent for being black, but I'm not in the skin, I can escape to my whiteness.

I used to think that Bellgab was a place with intelligent and evolved people.  From the response I am getting, there are a number of us, and likely many remaining silent for fear of retribution, over the denigrating manner this is still being handled.  You're a leader.  Leaders are counted on to keep an group safe/comfortable.  Some things are just way out of line and NOT funny.

We might have gay members here keeping silent for fear, and they should never be made to feel that way.  We are evolved or we aren't.

Unless you expressly WANT to chase away those of us that aren't in lockstep with a certain politics or ideal...

All I am trying to express is that, while some here, because of their politics/how they were raised/cavalier attitude, think this is about hurt feelings alone, they don't get it.  It's denigration.  At one time in Germany and Russia it was cool for some to make fun of certain religions and it soon came out of control.  And think about the suicide rate of kids suffering the stigma.  It's not a minor thing, this is a big deal, maybe not for some of you with the luxury of not being affected, but for others it is.  I have 7 good friends who are LGBT and I hear how it is for them.  Most of them grew up with me and are still friends with me unlike most other classmates, because they knew I was evolved.

Let's say you had a disfigured face and people, en masse, started referring to the disfigurement as a form of a "playful" insult.  How do you think you would feel.  You'd probably shrink and leave the site.  As it is for me, I just didn't come back here for a few days because of how it hurt.  If the goal here is to make a hostile environment, you've managed to do it.

Everyone has been falling all over themselves to suck up to Red.  That's great, but until she learns how to control such epithets she's gonna have a challenge in broadcasting.  Rush Limbaugh uses denigration on a regular basis and he's started to see him empire fail under his feet.  Like I said, kids are committing suicide over the stigma others have put on this.  Each of us are either a solution or a cause of this problem.

Just remember, what goes around comes around.

I whole heartedly disagree with the "either you are a part of the problem or a solution" manipulation trick.  I'm not a racist, misogynist, homophobe, xenophobe or part of any bigoted category you can throw out there.  I personally don't use any language that I think would be offensive, but I NEVER try to control the words that come out of someone else's mouth, no matter how offensive it may be! I will not be manipulated by haters or haters of haters.

No sucking up is needed.  It was just a joke.  I dig MV, but the guy cannot take a compliment, so I throw in an insult to balance out any compliments I may pay him.  As a female, and as a minority myself, I have dealt with my fair share of slurs and denigration in this life.  Have learned to let it go and have a laugh.  It's the GabCast, far worse has been said on that show, but this one word is being beat to death.
