I admire the persistence of faith against the onslaught of cold modernity.  In setting up his church, Smith's concessions to empiricism have been turned against him brutally, shredding the consolation his myths have offered to thousands of adherents through birth and death, leaving them stunned and naked.  We would never do this to, say, Hindus -- religion is a beautiful part of culture for us to study and appreciate when it's on the other side of the world.

And, it is only the grace of a couple thousand years, which no one expects any material evidence to survive, that spares my own faith that same fate.  Mormonism is just a proxy.

Plus, I'm a romantic and will always take the losing side.

I like Mormons, too.  We have prominent Mormons here.  But, when all is said & done, I believe in the Holy Trinity (a mystery), but they don't.  And, unless I'm mistaken, they say they let the public in to worship, but it's not really true because those are just meetings and the real worship is elsewhere, not open to the public.   Someone let me know it I'm wrong on that, because I've gotten mixed messages depending on where I live.

But, they seem to walk their talk at the mainstream level (although their "talk" seems to change, to be less Christian, as you go higher up).  But, they definitely do amazing disaster preparedness, as well as seem very organized.
