The new "Unsolved Mysteries"

 :-[

This actually dovetails with the collective sentiment here about Art;  I work nights (I'm a nurse) so, if I've had a difficult time sleeping, I'll turn the dreaded "telly" on. Of course my three old senses this, so it's time to cuddle with Mama....(too precious).  To get to the crux of the dilemma:  I caught an old episode of the new "Unsolved Mysteries"; hoo boy.

It's awful.  It's nothing personal against Dennis Farina (sic), but when Robert Stack hosted (RIP), this show rocked.   More crime focused than fear factor.

Thoughts?

BTW....thanks for the nice, warm welcome!

ShelliesMom

sorry, that's "three year old"...oops...

Yeah, these new ones with Farina seem real... disjointed. A lot of the ones i've seen, pretty much include taking the B-roll and interviews from the old 1980's series, and just updating the graphics....

Tried netflixing the classic episodes, so many of them are "save" only, I'm guessing a lot of people held on to them...

take a look on demonoid.  i'm sure the dvd sets are everywhere.

i agree about robert stack.  i thought he made the show, myself.  that show used to scare the shit out of me when i was a kid.  a few years ago, i bought the 4 disc "scariest ghost stories" set.  really good stuff.  my favorite is the story about the comedy store which is a standup comedy club in LA.

Oh I LOVED the old unsolved mysteries!  Robt Stack was the MAN!  There was a lot of unsolved crimes/missing persons/abducted babies kinda shit which was cool, but I really loved it when they used to delve into the paranormal stuff with UFO sightings, abductions, hauntings, unexplained phenomena and sasquatch and what not.

Haven't seen the new one, didn't know there was one.  I'll have to look for it.

awguy

Yeah, not a big fan of the new Unsolved Mysteries. The old show is quite possibly my favorite show of all time. It introduced me to all the mysterious things that I find fascinating now. Robert Stack was the man!

Has anybody seen William Shatner's new show "Weird or What"? Really liking this show. Reminds me a bit of the old Unsolved Mysteries.

i'm going to have to have a look at the new unsolved mysteries.

Yeah I am pretty sure that most of the farina episodes contain rewrapped segments.

I too am a huge fan of the original stack series. Most of the paranormal segments are available on DVD, and if you scour the web hard enough you can find DVDs of VHS rips that contain hours and hours of taped off-air broadcasts of the old UM that were never released on DVD...

Great music. The old score would at least help the new version along...

Anyone else here a big fan of the original In Search Of... documentary series?

Wow, same here, it totally sparked this lifelong interest in the paranormal for me aswell, as a lot of other people have said aswell, Robert Stacks Presence truly made that show what it was.

Recently took a trip to Barbados, as as it gets quite hot in the daytime and I just don't live on the beach athe whole time we're there, DVDs come in real handy. I took the "Strange Legends" DVD set down with me - took me back to being a kid all over again; actually wimped out on a few of them, and had to turn the lights back on when watching a few of them, they still hold up very well today.

Will most def have to look for the broadcast rips on DVD.

The Arthur C. Clarke show I think was called Mysterious Universe, and it was awesome too.

I was thinking of "In Search Of..." hosted by Leonard Nimoy, score by Rinder and Lewis and the music/sound design is amazing. I think that the only source for original untouched episodes is on film reels being discarded every day by local public libraries. I'm using my phone to post but later I'll post a link to the Coral Castle episode, it's worth watching.

I used to love "In Search Of.." as a kid, but I had a chance to watch a couple episodes a couple years back and I was sort of disappointed.  Granted, it still held the cool mood and atmosphere it used to (especially because Nimoy was perfect for it), but looking at the production style (not value), I just....... I don't know, wasn't feeling it.  I felt some of the shows were made about basically nothing - sort of like the bad episodes of Ghost Hunters or one of those shows.

Werd

Yeah the old Unsolved Mysteries was a great show. I really liked Ripley's Believe It or Not hosted by Jack Palance as well.

Oh, I dont watch the new UM, how can you compair the new with the Vintage, anyone who trys to re-create a show like that and put a modern spin on it is DOA.

Dont they understand its all about nostalgia. Such as the c2c am intro tune, ill give c2c am credit, at least they have kept it.

just wait.  it'll be replaced by midnight at the oasis any day now.

The old UM rocked. Nothing worse than watching a bunch of serial killer stories, disturbing composite drawings and ghost stories all told by Bob Stack and then having to go upstairs to bed on a school night.

I haven't seen the Farina hosted version, but it apparently gets run now and then. I'd like to see it just to have a frame of reference, but let's face it, cable is now dominated by these kinds of shows where 20 years ago they weren't.

i always assumed i was the only one who was creeped out by those composite drawings on unsolved mysteries.  they always scared the piss out of me when i was a kid.  even to this day, i do not like looking at composite drawings.  i think that show planted some seed of "composite drawing unease" in me that never went away.

I feel that a class action lawsuit may be in order, post composite stress disorder, I have that shit too.

Even the age-enhanced ones were fucking creepy...

The age enhancements creeped me out every time! And Robert Stack's voiceover made it 10 times worse, "If he were still alive, here is what he might look like today at the age of 85". Man I miss this show!

Oh, no way. There are tons of people creeped out by them. I think obviously it's a reflection of evil or something like that. There's actually a great UM message board that is still very active on the "Sitcoms Online" website, and the subject of creepy composites frequently comes up.

UNSOLVED MYSTERIES BIGFOOT Def One of my Fav along with Chupacabra (duh), and the Tallmans house, anyone remember that episode about the haunted bunkbed.

oh yeah.  that one was nuts.  i have it on my unsolved mysteries dvd set.  if you are a demonoid member, you can get the torrent file for the dvd set by clicking here.  if you're not a demonoid member and would like to be, PM me and i'll send you an invitation code.  just be sure you don't do any hit and run downloads.  you must share what you've downloaded with others to keep things proportional, or you'll get booted and i'll be warned for referring you.

The only "new" Unsolved Mysteries I liked is the ones from 2002 when Robert Stack came back to host an extra season or two. I will not watch the newest version. Robert Stack absolutely made the show.

I received all of the DVD's in that box set a few years ago as a gift and promptly watched them all. I like how they are separated out by subject. It's funny how many Coast to Coast guests have been on the show. Even George Knapp made an appearance on one of the alien segments. It's a great show that's held up well over time -- I wouldn't mind seeing some of the updates though.

i've been watching the old VHS rips of this from demonoid, and thinking:

What made this show so great, aside from Robert Stack, the music, production etc.

was the fact that it was a serious show, exposing murder, fraud, and all other sorts of serious shit

and then they would jump head first into UFOs, ghosts and cryptids with the same unflinching tone.

It almost doesn't make sense that they would do it.
