When did NYC drop Coast to Coast AM?

Started by Ghost to Ghost, February 23, 2010, 03:42:01 PM

I noticed this on Sunday night when I had to drive from Long Island back up to Westchester at about 2 a.m. -- no Coast to Coast on WABC 770 and no C2C to be found anywhere on the dial.

Now the vast majority of the time, I listen through a streaming link or the archived shows (CoastGab, The Best of Art Bell, etc) but I could have sworn it was only two or three months ago that WABC 770 was still carrying Coast to Coast in the late-night slot. Now they've got some no-name show on Sundays, and on week nights they've got John Batchelor.

C2C's official site lists many New York stations, but nothing in NYC itself.

This is insane -- how could the show have been dropped from the biggest market in the country? Does anyone know when they dropped the show or any news on if it's coming back to NY?

Thanks

Ok I've answered my own question -- they canceled it about two weeks ago, which makes sense because I was mistaken about the last time I listened to the show on terrestrial radio. (Much more recently than two months.)

Are there any other New Yorkers here on CoastGab?

I just sent an e-mail to WABC's listener feedback address, and I'd recommend we all do the same thing. We do NOT need another political talk show, especially on that station. Please let WABC know you're unhappy with the station dropping the show, and how insane it is that the biggest radio market is no longer carrying Coast to Coast.

Thanks.

Having done some more research on the issue, from what I understand, the reason why they pulled the show was some spat between program directors, with one of them calling C2C "conspiratorial and stupid."

I'll agree with you about Noory, but let's not forget other people host the show, and Art Bell comes back on occasion. If it were just Noory, I wouldn't care, but Coast to Coast shouldn't be removed from the biggest radio market in the country.

I don' think many of us like the idea of c2c disappearing forever.  It's just that Norry has so utterly changed the nature - and reduced the quality - of the show that it DOES seem inevitable that their market share will drop.

Sad, but inevitable.

... Just found out that the L.A. channel also dropped C2C.  Noory might have to dust off his Night Hawk suit.  Stay tuned...

BWAHAHAHA!!

to me, what this situation points out more than "the suck that is george" is the utter irrelevance of terrestrial radio stations in 2010.  there are soooo many mediums through which to hear your favorite radio show that the disintermediation the local radio station is a no-brainer.  i would encourage people to bypass their local terrestrial radio station and just start making it a habit of listening off the web.  you'll not have to be inconvenienced by the whims of some program director you've never heard of.

That's certainly true, and I think my experience proves it, because I'm used to listening via streaming links, not terrestrial radio.

But...tuning in on long, late-night drives is how I originally got into Coast to Coast, and it's much more difficult to get open-ended streaming (or regular network coverage) in a car than it is at home. I have an iPod Touch, so it's not like I can hop between open wifi networks while on a highway. I'd imagine it's even difficult for people who have a mobile data plan, since there are often dead spots, especially on highways.

Since I was in the car, and it was late-night, I wouldn't have minded as much if I was listening to Noory. And as bad as it gets with Noory, like I said, a seminal show like Coast to Coast shouldn't be removed from the biggest radio market in the country.

Depending on where you live, you may be able to get that station. In the meantime, please let WABC 770 know we don't want an 11th Hannity clone, and the overnight slot should not be just another generic political show -- bring back Coast to Coast!

Full quote from WABC program director Laurie Cantillo"

"DOUG MCINTYRE'S RED EYE RADIO is a refreshing live alternative to traditional overnight fare, which is canned, conspiratorial, and just plain dull. Our listeners love DOUG MCINTYRE and the fun, hip approach he brings to the news."

I'm probably 30 years younger than the typical right wing radio listener, and I can say with certainty that when you see people in a dying industry refer to a new product as "hip," it's absolutely fucked.

Araxen

George is literally killing the show now. Hopefully they can his ass because of this and hire Knapp full time.

The only way Snoory will get canned in the near term is if listeners start a letter-writing campaign en masse to the corporate parent to displace him.  C@C is now a wasting, deteriorating asset. In his heart-of-hearts, I wonder what Art Bell thinks about this?
