Uh huh. And what position did Marx hold in the Soviet government at the time? Was he in charge of the four year plan? You probably kept the essays you wrote for that community college. Go check them, babe, and let me know. I'll wait.

You’re trying to say that his manifesto didn’t directly inform and inspire Lenin and the bolshevik revolution? That’s rich! You’re going to have to unpack that one for me. :D

P.S. Did you even finish highschool?! ;D

Also, who could ever forget that he inspired all these angry women to turn China gay?

Biggest faggot nationstate ever!

If you had read anything about Marx you would know that he was talking specifically about Western developed economies and how they were poised to collapse under the weight of their own contradictions. The Communist Manifesto is quite clear about that and mentions the role capitalism played as the necessary interim stage before Communism. Russia wasn't a capitalist economy, it had only just emerged from serfdom. People like you mistake Marx for Lenin because you are brought up in a culture that doesn't read or question anything you were taught.

People like me?! You mean university educated people who understand that Marx died almost 40 years before the Russian revolution? WTF were you trying to pull with that shit? His manifesto is what we’re talking about when we say Marxism, you disingenous turd. ::)

Too bad for you that the opposite turned out to be true. After a century of communist experimentation all of them have collapsed under the weight of their own contradictions and capitalism is self-sustaining because it’s how people have been getting along and advancing for thousands of years, moron.

You are guilty of the same things of which you accuse me. Not believing in God doesn't mean you're not capable of awe at the natural world or responding to art. Do you think an atheist looks at Las Meninas and says, 'oh, it's just an arrangement of pigment on a canvas?' Or a Bach fugue is just an arrangement of notes in time? You're falling into a trap, or it's a deliberate misrepresentation. Read up on the 'Great Dinner' with Keats, Wordsworth, Lamb, Haydon etc, where they complained that Newton was unweaving the rainbow with his study of optics. You're just the same, portraying critical thinkers as being no more than calculating machines. I think it's a defence mechanism because you know you're on shaky ground.

The opinions about Marx you refer to are normative ones open to interpretation. There's no doubt he existed, where he lived, where he died, his children etc. There's a paper trail, an objective truth we can refer to. There isn't even irrefutable proof Christ existed, leave aside the supernatural claims. That's why the Marx comparison is a bad one. You need to appeal to faith to even believe he existed. If someone told me Marx didn't exist I would write them off as a clown.

All that void-peering, where has it got us? Nowhere. Name me one step in theology over the last 100 years that could compare remotely with advances in science? You can't, all they do is obfuscate and try and marry their religion with the demonstrable truths of science.

Faith has always had a place in history. So has disease, that doesn't mean it's a good thing. Religion was the only game in town for far too long. Got something you can't explain? Say God did it and move on. If you want to peer into the void using the tools of scientific enquiry you might actually find something useful.

Why is belief in a hereafter of any value? Think of all the people who have been terrified of hell. Think of all the people who are atheists who are still terrified of hell today. Implanting that kind of stuff on the mind of an impressionable child is shameful and I'm surprised at anyone who condones it. You see religion as some kind of woolly philosophising, but it isn't.

I hear the Messiah as a full participant in the culture that created it; I don' t think that's arguable.  You are the one arguing for a New Scientific Man who does not need to peer and the burden of proof is on you to demonstrate that he is viable.  Boudicca hangs on a mention in Tacitus but nobody objects to a statue.-- you really have no concept of what counts as acceptable documentation for the lives of first-century people.  It is never "God did it and move on."  When have we ever just "moved on" that is just cheap and tawdry argument.  It is always, what does it mean?  Good luck answering that with science alone.  I am unlikely to span, or cure cancer, so what value do I have?  What should I be doing?  Christians have largely avoided killing each other over religion in the past century, which is something.  Some people belong in Hell since the world's justice can only do so much.  Don't try to fob me off with these Dawkinsish populist arguments like the I am the village idiot here.

So, it was all socialism before?! :D

SredniVashtar

MD really doesn't know anything. And these people vote. For thousands of years a handful of people controlled the land and the wealth. Unless you were fortunate enough to be born into money and power (or were clever and gained advancement through the church) you were a serf working for a lord. There was no labour market and people's lives were basically static. This changed in the 17th century when people started raising sheep. The wool market encouraged people to enclose what had previously been arable land and kick the tenants farmers out. People migrated to towns to sell their labour and thus began modern capitalism.

Yes, there was a primitive communism where the lord had an obligation to his serfs. This isn't even arguable. Your knowledge of history is deeply terrible.

Yes, and those elites and landowners engaged in trade, also known as capitalism. ::)

Something else happened around that time to really advance capitalism to all. It was called the American Revolution. You may want to look into that, if you’re really interested in capitalism, that is (which you aren’t).

... a handful of people controlled the land and the wealth... There was no labour market and people's lives were basically static...

I see this in the Communist regimes, only now the handful of people controlling the land and wealth are "high-ranking Party officials" who then make decisions on where and what those under their control are to be employed as Labor, and where and what type of dwelling they will be assigned to by the State.  A "static" position for the serfs of Communism.

Functionally, how is this different from feudalism for the poor soul at the bottom of that pyramid?  They are supposed to feel better about the "fact" that there is no God as that being has been replaced by a Faithful Party Leader?  That guy and his fellow Party cronies are the new elites that Communism/Marxism sought to do away with.

Maybe, in small-scale situations with a small Tribal/family group Communism works, but in every large scale example of the attempted implementation of Communism that I am aware of it has been a failure, where poverty is endemic but not as noticeable because everyone that is not an elite in charge lives at basically the same level of misery.

The hypocrisy of that bankrupt system has always amused me.

It is the same old shit, with a thinly applied veneer of equality (in poverty) for the masses.

The State owns you, you are still a slave, and if the State does not like your personal political leanings, why we will just take your kidneys, eyes and liver and donate them to a more loyal and deserving Party Loyalist, or sell them on the open market to generate income for the failed state.

The most inhuman "humanist" political philosophy I know of.

Hey, K_Dubb, did not the J-man have something to say about hypocrites/hypocrisy?

What value do you have? What should you be doing? What does it mean? People like you claim these are pressing questions but really most people don't have time for that, they're more interested in how they're going to pay the mortgage, day-to-day matters that impact their lives. What value do you have depends on the connections you make. Value requires a valuer. If you have lots of people in your life who have reasons to be grateful for your existence then you have some sort of answer. You don't need specious supernatural reassurances to tell you what to do.

You can be a serial child murderer. Accept Jesus as your saviour and the blood of the lamb washes all that sin away. Live a decent life as an atheist and, according to many, you're going to hell. That's not the kind of accounting I want, and I'm glad it's not true. The good are often not rewarded and the bad go unpunished. We may not like it but it's the case.

I sense you've lost your composure a bit so I will table this discussion for now. You're attributing attitudes to me which I haven't expressed. Myths are useful so long as we don't confuse them with reality. Human beings need narratives to understand the world, but when we get caught up in the details of fiction it  does us more harm than good.

Hah.  Let me guess:  when the Revolution finally succeeds as it necessarily must, the Kind, Benevolent and Just Shredded-Vagtard will be placed at the helm to lead the Party faithful to greatness?  He will Punish the Bad and Reward the Good, for SV is wise and enlightened!

My money is on you being handed a shovel and told to get to digging that fucking ditch the State needs dug, and be quick about it or that is where We will inter your useless carcass.

It wasn't capitalism. They didn't have banks. Double-entry bookkeeping came out of Florence during the Renaissance. People weren't producing products to sell in any organised way. The best was exchanging a few raw materials. Until a few hundred years ago you were owned by a lord. You worked for them until you died.

Haha what horseshit!  I am perfectly composed and just ate three baskets of little green plums from the neighbor's with my coffee.  Value requires a valuer, yes, and, for centuries, when it comes to the poor and friendless, that Valuer is God.  Do you understand how much of our appreciation for the primacy of the individual that underlies western culture comes from the belief in bodily resurrection, where we do not lose our identities in some pit of souls, for recycling perhaps, but will see God in our flesh?  Sure, you do not have to ask those questions but that is hardly philosophical.

You know I am conversant with Myth -- in the non-pejorative sense where it is synonymous with religion -- and its place in life.  That is just semantics.  My fundamental problem is with people like you painting us as fools, claiming the territories of history (What, are you looking for a potsherd with "Jesus of Nazareth" on it?  How will you know it was His mug?  Unless we find the Sermon on the Mount in His own hand, how do we know He said it?) and religion (We'll just call it Myth and discuss it like literature so people know we really don't believe it as literally true.) in the name of Science when science has absolutely nothing to offer on them.  And we are idiots for quietly believing the same way our grandparents did.  You are the revolutionary selling the new idea.  Sure, go dig and test and find stuff but pardon me if I don't wait for your verdict.

You just described one of the worst things about religion. People think of this life as a place to wipe your feet when it's the only thing we can be sure we have. Sure, if you're poor and downtrodden it mitigates the worst effects while blinding you to the reality of your situation. It's a palliative, no more.

I see you don't have the faintest understanding of epistemology. You keep trying to shift the burden of proof when it lies squarely with you as the one making the claim. I don't say you're wrong, I merely ask why you think you're justified in believing in something without evidence, and why someone else can't be justified in believing something totally contradictory on the same basis.

I'm not selling anything. Americans are oddly hooked on remaining children. They tend to stop developing at a certain point in adolescence and stop welcoming new experiences. That's why religion is so popular over there, it appeals to the infant in you.

No you are the one trying to stretch scientific proof schemes to fit areas they can never hope to cover.  Try doing that to, say, the history of Egypt and see what you got left.  Sure you have dynasties carved in stone, but was that propaganda?  Your list of pharaohs turns to powder.  Don't lecture me on epistemology.  Different, subtly weighted standards apply once you leave the laboratory.

Only an idiot argues over things that can not be demonstrated.  But over the past few hundred years we finally got those articles of faith that people fought and died over relegated to private conviction -- matters of conscience -- and out of the public sphere.  That is where they belong, not as claims of universal truth demanding accession but as personal identity.  As such they will never be your simple (childish!) true/not true but that position is absolutely intellectually defensible and I will not be called a fool for maintaining mine.

        Hi David,
even tho you treated me really badly on Bellgab I like to share it with you few things that you might find them interesting.

Here is a link to an article where MV is giving an interview.
Take a good look at him.
Also take a look at that bitch brig aka Lilith wearing her stupid hat.

MV's real name is Michael Walker, after his step father.
Vandeven is the name of his biological father, whom he hates.
MV has an older sister (and he hates her too), Margie Vandeven. She is on Google.

What the hell are you talking about. You live in a virtual theocracy. Private conviction? The militant Christian right is on the rampage. 'God' gets thrown around like a beach ball to defend whatever policy they want, from reproductive rights to the environment. It's their justification for everything. This is why I steer clear of green plums, they make people talk absolute balls.

On a scale of 1-10 (1 being not important at all) how important is truth to you?

Not really. You conveniently neglect to point out the rationalism that grew out of Christain scholasticism and brought your sad nation out of the dark ages and into the beginnings of the modern world. I’m routing for the Christian army to continue making the world a better place. Commies like you always want to take us back to before the Magna Carta. ::)

Haha I will not pull a jesting Pilate on you ("Quid est veritas?") but I think, since you can see my nipples, that truth or at least verisimilitude is probably more important to me than the rest of you faceless losers.

Also you are allowed to vote your conscience; that is what it is for.
