Art Bell Quits Dark Matter

First, Art showed up and explained his problems with Sirius. I still feel it's a flimsy excuse that the callers would be a problem but gave a little more insight into what he was thinking. My problem with his reasoning is that he ran Dreamland without callers for many years and the show gained a large following. I enjoyed open lines a lot, but I would have gone along with an interview only show. Art could easily have pulled it off. If he was sick of it, he could have cut down his show time to two hours. Not every show had to be a full four. That's what he chose to do, and it makes his turning his back on the show that much more of a surprise. I do believe that he genuinely got some satisfaction from the show.

In fact - my key point - is that Art said explicitly that bellGabbers "may have been the reason" behind his return in the first place, or at least played a role in it. I remember congratulating the caller that got it out of him. I wish I could remember who that was because I even told him he earned his place in the bellGab hall of fame!

Second, Art comes back on and then says the Spooky Matter show was soft and one of the factors influencing his decision to walk away - despite all the grand proclamations in the opening show about not being a serial retiree - was a bellGabber mentioning that Spooky Matter was the weakest yet, and that it would only get worse from here. Quite a reversal from his initial statements. It certainly sounds as though we are both our best friend and worst enemy simultaneously. In fact, just as many others have pointed out, I do think Art's heart was not in it and he would have found an out whether that is in the form of a questionable stream or a bitchy gabber.

Art turned his back on us after we followed him from the crash of Coast to the latest show. We all kept the faith and even put down some serious bucks to listen to him in a new and exciting format. Surely Art would know that walking away would divide his fan base?

And, I don't really see why people are saying we are posting such mean things. We are angry, disappointed, fed up and FRUSTRATED. And we all have the right to be.

Outside of some of the disgusting personal attacks by obvious trolls, I don't many of us have said anything unfair or outright mean. It's fair that we are upset, I think it's even fair to wonder why the end of Dark Matter came so suddenly.

I don't see how any radio host with a devoted following could be surprised by the reaction to such a quick exit after such a massive buildup. If the show was bad, people wouldn't be upset. It was damn good, and people were just getting used to nightly Art shows being back in their lives.

Dammit Art. It doesn't need to be this crazy. Take the valid criticisms in stride, dismiss the vulgar personal attacks, and get back to work.

I think if art hurried he could be back on by 2am. Do open lines. It would be bellgab heavy but it would be fun! Come on Art!!!! We miss you art. If the show still sucks in 3 months you can resign and have at least tried.

The personal attacks on his family

That's a small, but vocal, minority here. Emotions are high, people are angry with how Art mishandled the situation. Whether he was joking or not in his earlier post, no one here believes he is washed up or that his interviews were poor. He's one of the best in the business which is why he has such a loyal fanbase. It's just a lot to handle when we've waited so many years for a six week run of Dark Matter. The show was great, Art Bell sounded re-energized, whereas in his final Coast to Coast AM hosting days he didn't appear to love what he was doing anymore, quick tempered and in a foul mood - not the polite man who handled the phones with grace and vigor as before. I hope that he can take a step back, realize that he overstepped his bounds and return to SiriusXM who still seem willing to work with him should he accept.

WE don't deserve Art? Apparently you missed the part where he strung his followers along for years with cryptic messages about forthcoming announcements that rarely lived up to the hype. I'm ready to move on if Art is.  Like really move on and forget about his entire history until his obit rolls up one day in the backpage of the news.  I don't have the time to watch this thread anymore and try to read between the lines.  On the other hand, if Art wants to go back, I can keep those hours in my weeknights.

But seriously.  This is a clusterfuck.  We have a right to be pissed as customers who invested in his show via SiriusXM.  If Art quit after 6 months.  I think it would t be anywhere near as crazy as this.  But 6 weeks. And only a passing and noncommital hint at the future C'mon man!

When I first read that the show was finished yesterday I felt sick. That quickly gave way to anger, which I'm still dealing with. Do you really think the fans here would have reacted this way if no one cared? Dark Matter was the best time I've had with radio in the last few years. If the callers are that much of a problem, adopt a Dreamland kind of approach and finish the job, Sir.
